Superman Returns demo

For Live Gold users.

Judging by my friends-list activity some of you have already spotted this, but there's a demo version of Electronic Arts' Superman Returns on Xbox Live Marketplace at the moment.

However, in keeping with Microsoft's current strategy of giving things to paying subscribers first, it's only Xbox Live Gold users who can get hold of it at the moment - with Silver users having to wait until 22nd November.

The demo is just over 905MB in size. The full Xbox 360 version is due out on 24th November according to EA UK's latest data, with PS2 and Xbox versions following in December.

What happened to Defender, or did it appear after I gave up the ghost and went to bed... Set this bugger downloading but forgot to check this am. Its the kind of thing my 5yr old will play :)
  • superted #2 5 years ago

it's quite a fun demo but i can imagine it'll get boring once the thrill of flying fast wears off..
  • peterfll #3 5 years ago

The control's not half bad actually. A lot of fade-in and pop up though. I guess there's potential if this sort of thing is your bag.

    @spage

Defender is on Xbox Live Arcade - or so says Major Nelson at least.

Microsoft need to sort themselves out - keeping trailers and demos restricted to subscribers is stupid. They are there to help sell the games - by restricting access they aren't encouraging subs, they are just discouraging game sales.
  • escapedape #6 5 years ago

Off topic...but is there any news on Worms, Spadge? :-D
  • IAmBatman #7 5 years ago

    What a pile of shit.
  • Ceatlan #8 5 years ago

    loveless,

There only limited to gold subscribers for a limited period, all demos will be available to all eventually.

Its a good idea if you ask me, reward the people who are paying for your service, but without penalising everybody else too much. Its no different to PC demos being made available to subscription members of download sites like file planet a bit earlier than for everybody else.

Yeah there is, but can't tell it yet am afraid. We're just discussing official announcements and the like. I've already been reprimanded (and lost one knee-cap) for mentioning it in passing. Hopefully we'll be able to supply more info soon on feature set, details and all that stuff, including when "Worms Wednesday" will be.

they sould ditch silver altogether. if people are too half assed to be bothered with live then they dont deserve any content.

superman though, could be fun i guess

    Spadge,

Fair enough, wouldn't want the other kneecap to go anywhere. I'd imagine you find it rather useful!

I got bored of this demo within 5 minutes, the graphics seemed good from afar but close up everything looked a bit crap. I suppose this could just be down to the game not yet being fininshed.

Defender is definitely on Live now. As is a Cars demo, for what it's worth...

T'was rubbish. The comabt was clunky at best, the po-up of scenery/enemies/people as you fly over the city was bad, the animation was boring/uninspired.

About what I expected to be honest.
  • Darren #15 5 years ago

Ah I didn't think it was that bad myself... very much like a cross between Spider-Man 2 and the last Hulk game on the Xbox but rezzed up. The framerate isn't very good though and there are a lot of jaggies (another 600p game?) but it was fun zooming around while flying and running and the game does a good job of making you feel like a superhero. The level design looks a bit uninspired though and it clear borrows heavily from those aforementioned Xbox games but it's quite fun to play.

Whether that fun translates over into a £40-£50 game is something I'm not prepared to find out as there are too many other more deserving games out at the moment. I might pick it up cheap in the post-Christmas sales though... if it gets good (7.0+) reviews...

Man, the Superman licence has SO much potential. I wish they hadn't gone all cartooney with it. I've got so many ideas for this game, I really ought to get into development.

Seriously though, what's the point of releasing a movie tie-in to Superman without the John Williams soundtrack?
  • Harpe #19 5 years ago

    That demo was gash.

Pick up Hulk:UD on the original for a pile more fun.

    >"Why, was it scratched?..."

I wonder how he's going to react to GAME's new policy.
  • Mashum #27 5 years ago

Lucky for them that Spider-Man 2 isn't on the 360 compatibility list, it kicks this game in the arse - at least as far as the demo is concerned.

I played the demo last night and I thought it was really great. It must be the best Superman game ever mad. I loved the way flying worked in this game. The only problem I could find with the flying mechanics was that loop-de-loops weren't possible. It would be alot of fun the the flying controlled more like flight sims, but still great non the less. The graphics are actually really good. The water looks amazing. My problem is that when you use the super breathe or whatever on civilians they only go flat on the ground instead of getting blown into the air like the villains. It would have been much more fun and funnier if I could have blown all the civilians around. Civilians also don't burn from the heat vision :(. I know maybe I shouldn't have been doing that but just being mischievous is so much fun. If you're into open world games and flying, this might be your cup of tea.

@Ceatlan - rarely does a PC demo have exclusive download periods. Some *sites* may operate an exclusive download period, but usually you can find them elsewhere, such as directly from the publisher.

If we want to compare to PCs, how about most action games being completely FREE to play online? It's only the RPGs you pay subs for, and you have to do that on X360 separately to paying for live gold. PS2, PS3 and Wii all have free online gaming as well...

@lordofdeadside - I very, very rarely play online games. I might occassionally ingulge in a few minutes of deathmatch, or a game of tennis, etc. - but nothing to the extent of justifying the subscription cost. If it wasn't for the live silver, I probably wouldn't have bothered getting an X360 at launch (although with the PS3 situation, I may have picked up an X360 at some point anyway).
