More NFS Carbon downloads News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

16 November, 2006

In what's turning into a bit of a banner day for EA downloads, the publisher has thrown a few more downloadable Need For Speed: Carbon vehicles onto Xbox Live Marketplace - each priced 80 Microsoft points.

However, in keeping with past displays, the new vehicles aren't actually new per se - instead EA's selling gamers the ability to unlock stuff that's otherwise accessible by playing through the Career mode.

So far that practice has proved, er, a bit unpopular, although it doesn't seem to have done the mass market's appreciation of the game any damage - with NFS Carbon still on top of the UK charts at the time of writing.

Anyway, the three new cars you can get hold of today if you're so inclined are the 1970 Plymouth Hem Cuda, the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and the 1967 Shelby GT500.

Yes, thats true. No reason to slog through their career modes any more when you can buy your way into and top of them. Then again, starting with the Underground games, playing through NFS has been impossibly tedious. About halfway through you start feeling there's no point going through impossible spikes in difficulty and tedium, if all you are getting are those now-infamous cutscenes.

That said, the car lineup in Carbon IS something fresh and quite extensive. Perhaps the only good idea in the entire game.

Stuff that.

Is there a cheat to unlock everything in the game so I don't have to play the game at all?

@disc: if you don't want to play at all, why bother unlocking everything? Just asking. ;-)

@disc: I don't blame you - after all you bought the game. I merely borrowed it and luckily realized how awful it was. As I said before, the problem with any current NFS is that no matter how attractive the whole shebang sounds in the start, it becomes a chore not long after.

The thing is, career mode is over in the blink of an eye anyway, so i really dont see the point in these. You can unlock all the paid-for downloads in career mode in less then 6 hours or so. If people are that lazy then.... well....

Actually, apparently there is some content that is only unlockable via the career mode.

Does anybody actually like this game? how is it at the top of the charts? I found it to be awful trash, it doesn't even look nice.

Because they cost EA next to nothing to do so all it needs is 10 people out of the thousands that buy the game to micro-purchase them and they make money. Like fruit machines and pool tables, pure unadulterated, loverly profit.

I suppose.. Given that only a fool would buy this game (it's trash regardless of who made it), I suppose there's a chance owners are stupid enough to be suckered into paying for something they already have, too. Sad that it's #1, makes no sense.

Actually it is not that sad. NFS is a huge franchise, and the majority buys them without reading reviews or checking out demos. Sad but true, most gamers do not read game mags, sites or reviews.

Firstly all three of those cars are unlockable just by playing through career mode, not even having to do extra challenges or go online.

Second all those cars are dreadful

I can see them releasing more downloadable content in the future as there are cars in the game that can't be accessed through unlocks (911 Turbo, Zonda, etc.) Expect to see these in the next couple of months as wonderful bonus features :(

Make the game
take out 10-20% of the content
Sell the removed stuff as bonus features and make even more money from the game

Got to speak up here; I can't be bothered with the Corvette but I like the Barracuda a lot and the GT500 is great, I've wanted one of them in a driving game since I first read Gunsmith Cats.

I quite liked NFSC, (at least up to the point where the MAGIC concrete Corvettes and Lamborghinis beat everything by default. I'm glad I didn't pay for it) but my main interest in it was the novelty of finally being allowed to drive actual proper muscle cars, Camaros and Challengers and Barracudas from the '65-'72 period rather than trying to tell me Skylines were muscle cars. If it's not a huge, wallowing, heavy car 12 feet wide, with a supercharged V8, streamlining like a brick with airscoops and two stripes down the middle it's not a real muscle car. That said, it thinks a Vauxhall Monaro is a muscle car. Pah. Come back, Interstate 76, I miss you.

Can't see why anyone wants to buy these though; it took a day to unlock all of these for me, and this was before the MAGIC concrete Corvettes put in an appearance. Unlocking the end boss Audi via the unlock might be sensible as the canyon duels are so very tedious and irritating.

Side note: those "bio videos" for the, er, characters are the best laugh I've had in ages.
