TR remake not cancelled!

And coming to PS2 and PC, too!

Cheer up, Tomb Raider fans! It turns out the 10th anniversary remake of Lara's first adventure hasn't been cancelled after all - and it won't just be appearing on PSP, either.

Rumours that the game was cancelled emerged after a statement appeared on Core Design's website saying that it was cancelled.

But that's not the case at all, according to SCi-Eidos. They've issued a statement saying that Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary Edition is very much in development - and will appear on PC and PS2 as well as Sony's handheld.

"Our 10th Anniversary Edition of Tomb Raider is a one-off title to celebrate both Lara and Tomb Raider," said SCi-Eidos bigwig Larry Sparks.

"It will appeal not only to the loyal fans of the Tomb Raider series but will also attract a totally new audience."

Well, it's certainly looking lovely, as the video which appeared on the Internet recently will testify. As for when it's out - Eidos isn't saying just yet, but we'll keep you posted.

Boooo! This sucketh. I was way more into this idea than the new game on the PSP. Not that I have a PSP anymore :(
  • Nikanoru #2 6 years ago

I've already heard this news, but:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

I mean god damn. First ever game that has made me even slightly wish I had a psp.

Oh well. *plays through the original for the 12th time* :(
  • Darkuss #3 6 years ago

Nikanoru LOL ;) I'm playing Last Revelation at the moment!

Anyway, that's bad news for me as well, I'd love an anniversary TR game for my PSP
  • ecureuil #4 6 years ago

Just remake the original already. :( Put it on 360 or something.
  • drumbaby #5 6 years ago

Shame....a million times more appealing than Legends, imho.
  • JohnnyWashnGo #6 6 years ago

I reckon its shows great judgement on behalf of Core.

The new Legend game on PSP sucks badly enough to convince me that any Tomb Raider game would be a challenging prospect for the handheld.

Or was it only me that was annoyed at the pathetic frame rate and dodgy controls in the new Tomb Raider PSP game?
  • dk_rare #7 6 years ago

Damn. First movie publishers drop their support for the psp, games getting cancelled. Looks like the PSP will soon be a very expensive paper weight
  • projectmayhem #8 6 years ago

you'll be able to play it when sony does the emulator!
  • Hunamster #9 6 years ago

Time to get a ton of e-mails on the go demanding this game
  • rinoaMW #10 6 years ago

it looks like they were almost done with the graphical overhaul as well.

Not that i heard about this remake until today :/

its a real shame - it looked great!
  • Kami #11 6 years ago

Remake it for current consoles, or maybe 360/PS3/Wii?

This is one of few remakes I think would be a very, VERY good idea.
  • mal #12 6 years ago

"Those of us who have spent our WHOLE LIVES attempting to actually "be" Lara Croft got very excited, even more excited than when we actually got to visit Angkor Wat in our best vest and shorts and padded bra and got told off by a security guard for trying to shimmy along the roof of the gift shop."

I got as far as about half-way through the above paragraph before spotting this wasn't one of Tom's articles (I can usually tell from the writing style). What a horrific mental image that was. I think I need a lie down.
  • Darkedge #13 6 years ago

that looked great - I'd love a nice hi res makeover for the 360 though :)
  • Kami #14 6 years ago

    *SPOILER*

    *NO REALLY, SPOILER ALERT.*

*Still here? Can't say you weren't warned...*

Lara's mum isn't, technically speaking, "dead"... someone hasn't finished Legend methinks...
  • SeesThroughAll #15 6 years ago

Yes the video "appeared on the internet". I posted a link to it here in the Tomb Raider Legend preview.
  • tengu #16 6 years ago

"Damn. First movie publishers drop their support for the psp, games getting cancelled"

    What games were cancelled?
  • RabidMonkey #17 6 years ago

    Shouldn't it be 'ScEidos'?
  • Machetazo #18 6 years ago

Woohoo! It's not cancelled after all! :D What a travesty that would have been. I'm def. getting the PS2 version, as the game looks ace!
  • rinoaMW #19 6 years ago

hang on, has the article changed?

    /is confused
  • blunted #20 6 years ago

The Core version (PSP, PS2 PC) HAS been cancelled. The game that will be released is NOT the one in the video linked above.
  • Artemus #21 6 years ago

  • Nikanoru #22 6 years ago

    Oh, in that case:

    YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it were a PROPER celebration, it would be on all consoles.

Agreed. But who knows, it might still see other consoles. TR Legend was announced to be on Cube, GBA and DS only after the other versions were already released IIRC.

    (edit: *reads blunted's comment* uhh.....wha?)

This is a strange and disturbing thread that makes no sense.

    /tip-toes backwards. closes door.
  • Teeth #24 6 years ago

Of course, it sounds like the half-finished game was wrestled from Core's hands and has been moved to a different developer, which probably means it will end up being buggy, slow, and late.
  • Laserbream #25 6 years ago

I really enjoyed TR 1 and 2, so this is good news (hopefully). I hope they keep the same music as the original.
  • drumbaby #26 6 years ago

Ah stop teasing me you f***ers!!
  • SimonM7 #27 6 years ago

So, will this control at all? (By post 1996 definition of the word, the original Tomb Raiders don't.)
  • tengu #28 6 years ago

Tomb Raider one had far better controls than Legend imo.
  • drumbaby #29 6 years ago

I played TR2 a couple of months ago...the controls were alot better than I remember tham....weird.
  • Feanor #30 6 years ago

But the graphics were worse? :)
  • Kami #31 6 years ago

    YAY! YAY! Thrice, YAY!

Sorry, I have such fond memories of the original, I would love to go back and revisit the original in the vein of Legend. Just think, Legends system plus the sheer size and scope of the original Tomb Raider...

    Wow... that's a nice dream...
  • SimonM7 #32 6 years ago

Had maybe. Had as in "when I played it I thought so".

Today, that's a rather tough sell, I'd say.
  • kgthatsme #33 6 years ago

10 years seems a bit soon to be remaking a game, only one generation later...
  • Nikanoru #34 6 years ago

So, will this control at all? (By post 1996 definition of the word, the original Tomb Raiders don't.)

    Go away.

Tomb Raider one had far better controls than Legend imo.

    QFE

If anyone didn't like the controls in TR1 then they're "doing it wrong". Either that or they somehow get the strange idea in their heads that TR is about the combat. I guess that's what the people who made part 6 thought, and we all know how that turned out.

The controls were absolutely perfect for precision acrobatics, you could look at a situation, figure out how to get past it and then perform your planned move "to the pixel" as one would say with 2D games, without worrying about the fucking camera because they were camera independant. Yeah, the old TR control scheme was really one of the few 3D control methods out there that *kind of* recaptured that old 2D precision, which was lost when games became 3D and controls became "fuzzy", vague, unpredictable approximations requiring gameplay to be dumbed down to compensate, even to this day.

So, yeah, as you might have guessed I don't like that they changed it for Legend, and I'm hoping they'll keep the controls of the remake the same as TR1, because else I shall be a very sad puppy indeed.

    /rant
  • Nikanoru #35 6 years ago

10 years seems a bit soon to be remaking a game, only one generation later...

Resident Evil 1 got remade within 6 years.....and oh how glad I am they did.
  • SimonM7 #36 6 years ago

Legend is no PoP, granted, but if you think the original's controls hold a candle against Sands of Time (which is essentially what Legend tries to mimic) then... well that's your opinion and stuff.

I loved TR1, and yeah sure I can play it today. I even think very highly of the first game, but post PoP I could never, ever go back to its tank like clunkyness.

Legend isn't as PRECISE, maybe, but then Ninja Gaiden isn't as PRECISE as Shinobi either, and few would stop and say "hey, Shinobi is a lot better..."

I guess few stop and say TR1 is better than Legend too I suppose...

And quite frankly, anyone who's still got problems with the camera in third person action games need to worry less about 2d and pixels and instead discover that their right thumb also moves sideways.

kami wrote: "Sorry, I have such fond memories of the original, I would love to go back and revisit the original in the vein of Legend. Just think, Legends system plus the sheer size and scope of the original Tomb Raider... "

    I feel similarly.
I don't know what you're referring to by "system" though; but the prospect of even the possibility of the fluid, more natural Lara that the Legend team created being the basis for the one that appears in the 10th Anniversary game, makes me even more eager to play this thing!
  • JA$ON #38 6 years ago

Wheres the xbox version? i dont own a PS2 or PSP.
  • Steroyd #39 6 years ago

    didn't you get the call?

Xbox is dead it's not worth launching any new title on it.
  • drumbaby #40 6 years ago

But the graphics were worse? :)

    LOL!!

What amused me was the amount of graphics options they gave you in the set up menu, and after turning them all on, and running it at the highest rez my monitor could muster, it still looked like shit! :))
  • SirScratchalot #41 6 years ago

Ok, am I reading the article wrong or something....
TR remake NOT cancelled. So how come about half the comments seem to think it is?
  • Jimmy__Fury #42 6 years ago

HOORAY :) I'm quite looking forward to this. I was hoping TR Legend would have some levels remade from the original: this is the best news I have heard for a while as TR1 is one of my favourite games. The level design is fantastic!

I'm confused as to why people don't seem to think this video is the real deal: it seems to use the TR Legend engine?

Oh well. Hope this out for Christmas.
  • GuiltySpark #43 6 years ago

"Ok, am I reading the article wrong or something....
TR remake NOT cancelled. So how come about half the comments seem to think it is?"

The article before was saying it was cancelled..But now they seem to have changed their minds so they altered the article...but they kept the same thread.
  • Sko #44 6 years ago

    "someone hasn't finished Legend methinks..."

Good grief. That's almost like saying someone hadn't managed to get all the way through the first Harry Potter novel (slash pamphlet).

"Of course, it sounds like the half-finished game was wrestled from Core's hands and has been moved to a different developer, which probably means it will end up being buggy, slow, and late."

Well, just think. It could have stayed in Core's hands and followed their development tradition of being buggy, slow, late and crap with it.

I wonder if Core announcing it got binned is to do with this Rebellion thing?
  • Luigi #45 6 years ago

Remakes... Just a way to do some easy money from the nostalgic freaks on and a way of saying "Hey, we are out of ideas in Eidos".
  • Hunamster #46 6 years ago

HOW DID I MISS THIS ARTICLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

    YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYS!
  • darkphoenix #47 6 years ago

I want this for XBox, or at least for PC.

I still love TR, but I want to play it in Progressive Scan, and not in stone-age $ony hardware...

  • Kami #48 6 years ago

Isn't the internet amazing, and mistakes can be so easily corrected?
  • thelastslice #49 6 years ago

I find it funny that the first good Tomb Raider since the first... will be the first Tomb Raider.
  • dk_rare #50 6 years ago

Does anyone know what is happening with the psp o.O Well, at least we all have PC's (don't deny it) so we can all play it on teh bigger screen.
  • DDevil #51 6 years ago

    I don't have a PC. I'm posting using my Amiga 1200!
