Pirates set sail for PSP

Details, shots and date.

Yar might be interested to hear that 2K Games and Firaxis have confirmed the upcoming February release of Sid Meier's Pirates! on PSP.

Mixing strategy and adventure elements, Pirates! - previously released on PC and Xbox - gives you control of a small boat and sends you out into the Caribbean in search of swash to buckle and treasure to loot.

There's sea battles, even the odd land tussle and plenty of amusing mini-games - sword-fighting, but also dancing - to tackle on your way to becoming a notorious pirate with a sizable fleet.

Additions to the PSP version include ad-hoc multiplayer for up to four players, as well as a few new treasure hunts. Enough to make it attractive to people who didn't try it on the other systems, then.

Plus it's due out quite soon - 23rd February, says 2K Games - and you can see how it's shaping up in these screenshots.

And I just sold my PSP! :(

Now, let's pray for a DS version. And of Civ too.

Yeah, if it's anything like the PC/console versions, you'll see all the game has to offer without needing to recharge it once. :p

/is in the "the new Pirates is a bit rubbish" camp

    "God, this looks shit."

Why does God care if it looks shit?

Better play an emulated old "Pirates!" on your PSP than the not-really-improved Xbox/PC "Pirates! Live the Life".

To be fair, the old Pirates! didn't have much more to offer. That fact was just hidden, because it wasn't as organized as this, and you were alone on the map with "random encounters" instead of seeing the ships on the map.

So it FELT bigger. But I agree it's still the better game, and felt more like a simulation of pirate life than this, which is more like a Disney version of pirates. The old was just grittier.

That's correct, but then Pirates! is quite old. By doing a remake rather than a sequel, they actually made a significantly worse game than the original was in its time.

Yeah, I agree. But I think it's still good fun, and very addictive, and I still wish for a DS version. And it's a shame they didn't make dancing optional, that you could still flirt with the girls and get married, but not having to dance with them. I hear a lot of people have problem with dancing, although I never had.

I'm still eagerly awaiting either an expansion pack or a sequel announcement from Firaxis. The engine's good enough, so an expansion pack is really all that is needed.

Bah, the remake was at least as good as the old Pirates! Gold. I'd buy this on the PSP in an instant... if I still had it.
