Psychonauts to join Steam

Majesco lines up PC titles.

Majesco has hopped onto the Steam bandwagon and plans to start flogging excellent platform title Psychonauts through Valve's system in October.

In the meantime, it's already selling BloodRayne 1 and 2 and Advent Rising for between US$ 10 and US$ 20, with a 10 percent discount available for the first two weeks.

Majesco's biz-dev director Daniel Hofbauer reckons Steam is "unrivalled" as the "leading digital download platform" amongst the likes of you, and thinks selling the above games through Valve's service is likely to extend the reach of key brands.

Which is just as well, as Majesco hasn't been doing brilliantly lately - posting relatively improved third quarter revenues but still doing badly compared to its performance in 2005.

Recent results have forced the publisher to focus on smaller titles - something that pushed it in the direction of Nintendo Wii, for which it's working on a pair of games, one of which is Bust-A-Move Revolution, due out in early 2007.

Hopefully this means more people will buy this absolutely classic game. More exposure for this game can only be a good thing.

Actually, this was sent out in a press release. It's probably nicer to know that they DON'T read the forums. ;-)

Ah Steam. It's great they're offering such a wide range of games, and providing a platform to deliver classic games, and ones worthy of high regard to a wide audience. Unfortunately, if ever they provide a third party game that is broken (like the incomplete, bugged to hell Jagged Alliance 2 Gold they're still selling knowingly without the add-on part 3 months on without telling anyone), they take on a stubborn, ignorant stance and take no responsibility for it. You enter into a binding contract that means you're entitled to no refund (unless you hound their support people until they go home crying at night) because you signed their end user agreement which also assumes you have amazing powers to know in advance you're not getting what you pay for. I hope Psychonauts and future titles don't suffer the same fate as JA2, or at least Valve treat customers who buy 3rd party games through Steam with a bit more respect. Otherwise I view Steam with the same contempt as I do StarForce.

    To Collie:

No doubt Valve wants to provide you with the goods, but if they're being messed around by the third party who supplies the game, then there's not a whole lot they can do except call their lawyers in. I think I remember reading that Valve were offering refunds to people who were unhappy with having to wait for the situation to be resolved.

I've been playing through Advent Rising on the XBox at the moment. I'm glad I borrowed it from a friend. It's not a bad game, and I'm a sucker for that kind of story, but damn!, is it buggy as all hell! I'm surprised they let it go gold in that state. So I'm wondering, will they be fixing it for it's Steam debut, or just letting it go, as buggy as ever?

I'm sure I read somewhere that most of the bugs in Advent Rising were ironed out for the PC release.

I may just take the plunge and buy it as AR looks like a fun game anyways and the reviews never mentioned any game stopping bugs.

On gamerankings.com, the PC version of Advent Rising gets better review scores than the XBox version. Seems indicative of less bugs.

I was thinking of springing for it simply because I'm a fan of Orson Scott Card. As for Psychonauts, I got it relatively cheap for the PS2 so there.

I might just have to buy it again...
