Relic working on Dawn of War expansion News

PC News by Tom Bramwell

15 February, 2005

Following the critical and commercial success of its Games Workshop-backed real-time strategy title Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, publisher THQ has announced that its subsidiary Relic is busy at work on an expansion.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault (another for the colon plus hyphen brigade) is due out later this year on PC, and adds the Imperial Guard as a new playable race.

Relic general manager Ron Moravek paid tribute to the fans who helped justify the expansion, commenting: "The response to Dawn of War has been overwhelming. Combining the enthusiasm we're seeing from the fans with the ability to draw from the seemingly endless, rich content from the Warhammer 40,000 universe made the decision to create an expansion easy."

"We look forward to building on the Dawn of War franchise with even more visceral combat action throughout both the single and multi-player experiences," he added.

Heh, yeah I would have thought Imperial Guard about the *least* interesting faction to add as playable... still I suppose they have some assets already from the single player missions.

Just as long as this is reflected in a nice cheap price for the expansion.

Cower before the Iron treads of Imperial Guard!! Tanks a go go!!

When I used to play Warhammer 40K Imperial Guard were my army, I liked Dawn of War, but when this appears im going to love it.

Can't wait to see some screens, I need a Catachan army, with loads of Lemon Russ tanks.

There might be more factions than that added, or it's possible they might expand the existing factions (adding the missing aspect warriors to the eldar, for example).

Relic do tend to keep things quiet longer than most, and if it's not out till winter I'd bet on there being more than just one more playable faction.

We need the Sisters of Battle.

If it's got a random map generator for skirmish mode, I'm there. If not, I won't bother. I never did play the campaign at all in the original game. In fact, aside from the tutorial, I've never played as anyone other than the orcs.

Random maps would be nice but probably pretty tricky given the "bespoke" nature of the map data. Not impossible but too much work for an expansion pack I expect.

That is one bad-ass tank in the screenshots... I'm warming to the Imperial Guard idea...

I think many people wanted Tyranids, but in the end it probably comes down to which race is easier to develop for an RTS. I love the original game; it looks like this will make me love it even more. Bring on some more ork units!
