Due sooner than expected.

Work has been completed on Operation Flashpoint: Elite, the much-expanded Xbox version of the PC military sim, and publisher Codemasters has even brought the release date forward to October 28th. Last we heard, it was going to cost Ł19.99, which is nutsly good value.

Developed by Bohemia Interactive - and long in development - OpFlash Elite offers what sounds like a satisfyingly broad array of activities for tactical shooter fans, adapting the original PC single-player game and including the 15-mission Resistance campaign on top.

On-top-on-top of that, there's Xbox Live support - over 50 missions with co-op and teamplay options are included, with support for 14 players simultaneously or more than 25 using the dedicated host mode.

You can find new screenshots elsewhere on the site as well as more details on the sorts of helicopters and Russian people you'll be fighting with, against, and so forth, in our previous coverage.

Expect to see a review up around here sometime close to October 28th.

I think they brought it forward and dropped the price to prevent it going head to head with Battlefield: Modern Combat as it would have got trounced

I guess the releases of BF:MC, SW:BZII and the next-gen hype may well have moved the release forward and the price down. There probably isn't enough eye-candy on show here to make waves in the current climate but if the gamepaly is still there I'll be happy to give it a go...

Oh dear, brought forward and only Ł19.99 RRP. I hope this a radical new approach to game development but I have a horrible feeling that this may be bad news for those who have been waiting for months/years for this game.

It's a rare thing for great games to be brought forward and cheap to buy.

Damnit!!!! I'm gonna have to quit my job. Still playing GTA:SA, Riddick & Forza, as well as wanting to get Sniper Elite, Heroes of the Pacific, OFP and Battlefield 2!! Arrggghh

If this game translates to console properly then you XBox owners will be in for a treat, let me tell you. Flashpoint was one of the best war experiences ever available on PC, especially in multiplayer. A lot's come and go since then though, so it'll be interesting how it fares in 2005. But I hope this release hasn't distracted them from the important business of Flashpoint 2?

I've given up hope on Flashpoint 2 after Bohemia got dropped, I think Codies have made a huge mistake there.

I think the Xbox version of OPF1 could well be a classic - the original still holds up and if they've made the multiplayer a little more accessible then it'll be a winner for me.

I just hope the A.I.'s as good as it was on the PC version. I've seen too many games like this where developers use the excuse that the game's primarily multiplayer to foist sub-standard AI routines on us (ie SW: Battlefront and, probably, Battlefield 2). Believe it or not guys, some of us do like playing these games offline as well!
