Resi Evil Wii named

Plus Devil Kings, more.

Amongst the many titles shown off in Japan at Nintendo's Wii unveiling earlier today was a new Resident Evil title called Umbrella Chronicles.

Briefly trailed in this week's Famitsu, Biohazard: Umbrella Chronicles (Japanese name) is being produced by Masachika Kawata, whose previous work includes porting Resident Evil 4 to PS2.

You may remember Capcom having mentioned the Wii Resi title previously of course - in May, the company said it would "combine the series' intense gaming experience and atmosphere with the revolutionary control system of the Wii", but didn't go into much more detail.

And it's still not going into much detail - other than to say it's an action game, and it will make use of the Wii remote control. Which is a bit like pointing out that the sky is blue.

Speaking of which, Forever Blue was another new entry on the list of titles in development for Wii. It's an underwater diving game, apparently, which Nintendo is working on, and like Umbrella Chronicles it made a brief appearance on a video showreel.

Another title you might not have heard much about is Hajimete no Wii, which IGN translates to "Starting Out With Wii". Appropriately it's among the console's 16 launch titles, comes bundled with a Wii remote, and consists of nine mini-games - including the Duck Hunt look-alike and table tennis game glimpsed in previous trailers for the console.

Edit: Finally, separate reports from Japan suggest that Capcom plans to bring the next Devil Kings game to Wii in addition to PS2, although no further details were announced.

Apparently this new Resi uses the resi-4 engine, with improved graphics (and obviously remote for aiming).

Which - looking at how lovely resi-4 looked/played, is gonna be quite nice indeed!
  • Blerk #13 5 years ago

Footage looks very similar to Resi 4. Which is nice. Alleged game details sound more like Gun Survivor, however. Which isn't.

Umbrella Chronicles? Sounds a bit ... gay.
  • quantumsheep #15 5 years ago

You can see the resi bits very briefly on the jap showreel vid - just before the Zelda footage.

Looks like the mansion from Resi 1 to me...

    Unofficial info:

Read this from a games magazine in HK today - its called Biohazard : Umbrella Corp Chronicles and fills in the story on Umbrella before and leading to BH4. Gameplay is a mix between using the Wiimote as a light gun and BH4 style elements e.g. action buttons pressing X for a dramatic scene. It features scenarios from BH1 (museum), BH2 (police station), BH3 (raccoon city), BHCV and BH4 (village) and ties in the gaps especially BHCV and BH4. Characters include Chris/Claire, Leon / Ada, Jill / Carlos, Rebecca, Hunk and Wesker . There are two gameplay modes - scenario mode and arcade mode. Proper announcement to be made by Capcom at TGS

Aye, getting a bit sick of the old 'best of' / 'remix' for nintendo consoles. Almost like developers can't really be dicked...

Can see this happening a lot with the wii though, emperor's new clothes style...
  • kangarootoo #18 5 years ago

Umbrealla Chronicles? Reminds me of a sort of cross between Rainbow Islands and New Zealand Story. Not quite the title I would have expected.

Still, a rose by any other word and all that. I'm sure it won't matter once people get used to it.

I'll regard this game in the same manner as Resident Evil Deadly Silence....

Looks like the Wii is going to get all the shovelware RE spin-offs that Capcom decided to plague the PS2.

uh? How is this shovelware exactly? If it plays half as good as re4 (which engine it's using) i'll be happy.
  • Tayl #26 5 years ago

smelly- "uh? How is this shovelware exactly? If it plays half as good as re4 (which engine it's using) i'll be happy"

It's shovelware because Capcom consider the Wii too technologically incompetent to handle a true sequel (i.e. RE5), therefore they produce this "pastiche of past Resi games" crap in order to sate those Wii fans who enjoy Resident Evil, and to fleece them for every penny they can. Simple, really.

Expect Wii to receive this kind of third-class treatment a LOT over the coming years.

....it's gonna be a bloody Survivor game isn't it? God dammit please don't let it be a Survivor game.

I think you're looking at the first bit of footage which looks slightly like RE but is another game. At least, I would think so when they show off a second or two of what looks like the RE1 mansion later in the video.

That makes me fear something else; that it is yet another game filled with area's we've already seen. I mean, REmake was absolutely wonderful (and my favourite RE game ever btw). RE DS was pushing it. But I will NOT buy into that same shit a fourth time.

Oh great. Another 'walk around killing zombies whilst carefully managing ammo' game :/

    @Fozzie_bear

Yeah, 'cos thats all Res Evil 4 was right?

    o-o

Actually yeah, that was sorta what RE4 was. At least the traditional RE games had puzzles, and semi non-linear gameplay (as opposed to RE4's which was basically on-rails, level 1, level 2, level 3 etc business). So I would say Fozzie was talking about RE4 and not the others.

By the way, how many games can you name that fit the discription "walk around killing [insert enemy type] whilst carefully managing ammo"? So that's a retarded thing to use as a criticism.
  • kangarootoo #29 5 years ago

    @Tayl

"It's shovelware because Capcom consider the Wii too technologically incompetent to handle a true sequel (i.e. RE5)"

They mentioned that last time you were round for tea at Shig's place did they? I think if you replaced the "Capcom" in your comment above with "I" and the "i.e." with "IMO", things might start to make a bit more sense.

Ninty almost certainly decided to create a unique version of Res for the Wii because it is a unique system. If they had simply released the same version on all platforms people like you would have (reasonably in that case) complained that it wasn't using the Wii controller.

Scaling assets et al to fit a game on a less powerful system is the bread and butter of many companies. Its certainly not a task Nintendo aren't capable of, so I very much doubt the power difference is the reasoning behind a completely seperate Res version on Wii.

And I think you need to look up shovelware on Wiki.
  • Tayl #30 5 years ago

"The derogatory computer jargon term shovelware refers to software noted more for the quantity of what is included than for the quality or usefulness."

what I wrote: "It's shovelware because Capcom consider the Wii too technologically incompetent to handle a true sequel (i.e. RE5), therefore they produce this "pastiche of past Resi games" crap"

Editing my quote in order to try to score a w1n is pathetic.
  • kangarootoo #31 5 years ago

    @Tayl

Lol, "score a w1n". You really don't know me at all.

I just copied and pasted your quote mate, and I'm not sure the bit about a pastiche on the end makes any real difference.

    Ninty said,
"combine the series' intense gaming experience and atmosphere with the revolutionary control system of the Wii"

Thats all they said. Its like Bungie saying "Halo 3 will combine the series' intense gaming experience and atmosphere with INSERT NEW FEATURE HERE".

So I'm not sure how that gives you enough to declare it as shovelware or a pastiche.

Perhaps you are assuming they meant they will rebadge the past Res games with a Wii control system? If thats the case, at this stage I think you assume too much. If that isn't the case I don't understand how you can badge this as anything other than another Res game, given how little information is available right now.
  • quantumsheep #32 5 years ago

My God - I think I may be backing up Tayl of all people, but here goes...

You know your fave weekly tv show? You know how they nearly always have an episdoe where someone's knocked unconscious or something and remembers stuff that happened in previous episodes?

It's a cheap way to get another episode aired...

This is what I'm reading into this. This is what I think Capcom's done. But they've added a new control system to it a la wiimote (much like the being unconscious thing in my analogy is the narrative form used to string the bits together).

I really hope I'm wrong though!
  • smelly #33 5 years ago

It's shovelware because Capcom consider the Wii too technologically incompetent to handle a true sequel (i.e. RE5),

LOL.. and you know that how exactly?

    sigh.

So you think its true.. so therefor thats what capcom thinks...

From what I can tell, it's two different games. One is using the resi 4 engine modifed to make best use of the wii, one is using a brand new engine.

Doesnt make one better than the other, im sure both will be good games.

But will Sengoku Basara get raped for its European version again? Not only that, but if it is the next Sengoku Basara game, that would make it Devil Kings 3, presuming that the recent PS2 sequel also gets a release here.

You have to laugh people already giving the kiss of death before they even know anything about it..

How on earth better Graphics make a game a true sequel is beyond me a different story or continuation of a story or theme makes for a true sequel not because it looks better, thats just a graphic whore interpritation of what makes a true sequel..

and Resi:Wii as i have heard will fill in details between games and give ou the whole picture of whats goin on in the Resi world and No doubt Resi:5 will be better looking and a new story but at the end of the day they all be based around the same premise of shooting Zombies bosses bad guy what ever.

If this games live upto Resi:4 id be happy that was one of the best yet i think anyway and and Wii Controls (lol) it should be quite good more NewGen than NextGen.

Is there some extra artivle I haven't read or something?

quantumsheep, I totally agree that IF Ninty had one what you say then it would suck, and IF they had done what you say Tayl would be right. But I am not seeing even close to enough information to suggest anything of the sort.

As I said earlier, "combine the series' intense gaming experience and atmosphere" etc tells us nothing at all about what the game will be. I think people are just feeling cynical and expecting the worse. Which is fine if they say stuff like "sounds like it might be this, I certainly hope not" as you essentially did at the end of your post.

Re4 was an awesome game, so I am inclined to give the benefit of the doubt, at least until some actual information turns up.
  • quantumsheep #38 5 years ago

    Mr. Kangarootoo!

    Hello!

While I'm here, let me just say that I did specify "This is *what I'm reading into this*. This is *what I think* Capcom's done."

It's just my opinion. But I saw what they did with the DS version...

Also, the footage was clearly of the mansion in Resi 1 - the dining room on the right of the start point of Res Evil 1 - the corridors that I could instantly identify. All done up to look nicer of course.

If it was something new, I think ( *I* think! ) they would have shown something different, even for those few short seconds!

    I hope I'm wrong, I really do.

To be honest, Ninty and Capcom haven't given enough details to decide one way or the other. But my gut tells me it's a rehash of sorts :(

And what I think makes a good *game* is the almost total opposite of Tayl's. So I was as surprised as anyone that I agreed with him on a point :o

    It's all good, matey ;)

    @quantumsheep

Hehe, what a formal greeting :)

"Also, the footage was clearly of the mansion in Resi 1"

The footage? Hmm, I suspect that this is the part where it is revealed that I have missed some crucial bit of info that does in fact suggest a rehash. "Suggest" still being the key word here though (he says whilst backpedaling).

If they use some of the same environments but redesign the control system and gameplay then I would still be happy so long as its fun. A revisiting isn't necessarily shovelware if it is done with gameplay in mind.

"If it was something new, I think ( *I* think! ) they would have shown something different, even for those few short seconds! "

It might be that some sections of the game are based in the same location, and that these areas are naturally more finished and can therefore be shown. Again its all speculation, which is great so long as its recognised as such.

I'm still awaiting more info before I commit to a 3 course opinion.

It is the mansion from the REmake...
    No doubt about that...
    1up has some detailed pictures...

I'd bet on a resi light gun game, but with a twist this time: It's actually good!

I've read somewhere that it would fill the gaps between the other games...
And should that be true while retaining 1 character...that means it must be Wesker or Hunk...

Anyway, let's have faith in Capcom shall we... :)
  • koopa #41 5 years ago

    From GameZone:

-The game consists of 4 "chapters", RE1's mansion, RE2's RPD, RE3's city areas and RE4's village (plus surrounding areas).

-Each chapter has 2 characters to choose from. RE1 has Jill and Chris, RE2 has Leon and Claire, RE3 has Jill and Carlos and RE4 has Leon and Ada.

-There are several characters that can be unlocked by playing through the game: Rebecca Chambers, Hunk and Albert Wesker.

-The gameplay of all chapters is designed around RE4's. Press the B trigger on the wiimote to go into over-the-shoulder view, aim with the pointer and press A to fire.

-The game will have QTEs, but rather than push buttons you have to make motions with the wiimote in order to get through them.

-All characters will have męlée attacks, just like RE4.

-To encourage replayablility, each character has strengths and weaknesses, similar to how in RE4:Mercenaries Ada had the least health, Krauser was the slowest, etc.

-Just like in RE4:Mercenaries each character has a unique set of weapons. What's more players can only carry 2 weapons at any one time. Chris gets a pistol and shotgun whilst Jill gets a pistol and grenade launcher.

-You will be able to find several new weapons during each stage. For example, RE1 will have Richard's shotgun, RE2 will have the Desert Eagle, RE4 will have the Chicago Typewriter. There will also be new weapons like Krauser's anti-personnel robots.

-Similar to Devil May Cry 3, after each chapter you can save your data and any new weapons picked up will be available for use in Arcade Mode.

-Arcade Mode is like a giant Mercenaries minigame. No puzzles or story, just pick a character and a stage and blast through it. Building on the resounding success of Mercenaries seen when RE4 was released.

-Scenario Mode will feature a large number of ingame cutscenes.

-New content not in the games that the chapters were based on will be added. The primary goal of this will be to link RE4 and Umbrella's status in it more closely with the rest of the series.

-Ammo conservation will play a part in the gameplay, so it's not just constant action like RE4.

    -Trailer coming at TGS.
