Capcom polls for Resi 5 ideas News

PC PlayStation 2 GameCube Xbox Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Tom Bramwell

14 June, 2005

Capcom Eurosoft is asking fans of the Resident Evil series what they would most like to see in the fifth game in the series, which was confirmed in March by producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi.

In a forum thread that you can find here the admins appealed for suggestions - "Features, characters, anything..." - and although it's not clear whether much will come of your suggestions it's safe to say that the thread has attracted plenty of responses.

We'd like to see more zombie-monkeys, us.

Earlier this year Capcom's Kobayashi-san told an American magazine, "We are going to do a Resident Evil 5, of course, but as for exactly what it will be like... that's something we're busy thinking about right now."

"It's safe to say that RE5 will naturally proceed from where RE4 left off," he added, which will be good news for fans of the most recent instalment, which recently sold through the half-million-unit mark worldwide after a Cube-exclusive launch in the US in January and Europe on March 18th. It's due out on the PS2 later this year.

RE4 was sickeningly good. I therefore have high hopes for the next game in the series.

They're asking people what they thought was good or bad about the last game, what's wrong with that? They are, after all, the people who played it.

Consulting customers in order to improve your product? What the hell are they thinking? Tch.

Resi 4 has only sold half a million units WORLDWIDE?

EG are you sure about that - I'd have imagined that in Japan alone it would have sold more than that.

They're not asking people what they thought was good or bad about the last game. They're asking "what half baked ideas do you have, which you can readily critisize us for not having, but when they're implemented, and they suck every cock in the universe, we're held responsible, and you have no accountability". If that's the way you want to make games, fine. Bring on the ITV of video games.

Curse you for giving me doubts! :-)

Bezzy, I think it's highly unlikely that Resi 5 will be the 'fan fiction' edition of the series. There's nothing wrong with asking people what they'd like to see or what they thought could've been done better. In fact, everyone should be doing that. Maybe then we wouldn't get sequel after sequel with the thing that annoyed you the most left unfixed?

In that case: When I press a Direction on the Analogue Stick I want to move in that direction. This rotational shit should have died with the PS1.

Its practically first person in 4 though. You know, except that its in 3rd person perspective.

Quite the improvement over the old system, anyway.

It still takes too long to look to the far left or far right. They need to speed that up. A 'quick turn' as well as a 'quick reverse', if you will.

I think the controls work incredibly well in Resi 4, you have a quick 180 turn feature, while the relatively slow turning simply adds to the excitement and terror of the game. It is a very good game.

I'm happy that PS2 owners will also get a stab at this one, it's simply too great to be played exclusively by GC-owners :)

Heres a idea Capcom. Whatever you do, make sure Resident Evil 5 is on the shelves in those establishments called shops from day 1.

Although I missed Umbrella Corporation a little bit, RE4 was that good to go without traditional RE story elements.

Yet I'd like Capcom to be more "Atmosphere" than "Action" with a tighter story.

Cack! It just highlights the fact that you're playing a game with sluggish controls. If a bunch of rabid rednecks with pitchforks and torches came at me from the right, I'd immediately turn to point my gun at them, not slowly rotate in their general direction! The instant 180degree turn was fab. I'd like an instant 90degree turn too.

Heres a idea Capcom. Whatever you do, make sure Resident Evil 5 is on the shelves in those establishments called shops from day 1.

Not getting Nintendo to publish and distribute it would appear to be the best idea to combat that one, I suspect.

More cutting: let us throw shurikens at them. Let us slice their limbs, impale them as they come in a row with a spear. Let them have soft bodies so we can rip their heads off and then squash them with our feet.

I loved Resi 4 (Loving Resi 4 I mean... Haven't finished it yet). Think it should be more scary than it is. Still think it could go for sheer terror more than just monsters. (the scariest thing in resi 4 are those damn snakes that jump out at you every once in a while! Everytime that happens a little poo comes out... Of me).

Resi 5 should keep the atmosphere, and keep with an original setting (I'm loving the Spanish theme). Maybe they should just go for a more hardcore Zombie Fest, return to the Survival Horror theme. Get rid of giant fish, and cockroaches, stick with the un-dead.

Even better just do a tie in with George A. Romero's new Zombie film 'Land Of The Dead'!!

It's more of a 75 degree turn from memory, but give it a try and see if it's what you were after, Blerk.

Also, if you're looking up at the ceiling or down at the ground and realise a ganado is coming right at you, just tap L and your view will be re-centered.

How about making it shorter for those of us who don't have much more time in life for the legendary gaming sessions of yore? I'm about 20 hours in on my first play (I'm slow but sure) and just sigh every time I enter a new map.

Plus it doesn't help that (a) San Andreas just hit Xbox, and (b) I just bought my first PC and am spending far too much time on my knees worshipping every moment of Half Life 2...

How about the next feature for RE5 being one of those new fangled time machine things?

You don't even have to be holding R first. It's just C-right + R. As simple as Down + B. People are just whiners.

I'm about 20 hours in on my first play (I'm slow but sure) and just sigh every time I enter a new map.

Sucks to be you.

Though...one thing I would change about the game is its "always forward" feeling. The areas were beautifully crafted, and there were more of them than in other games, yet you didn't really get the time to appreciate them because you zoomed through a room once and that was it. Take the REmake for example, when you start the game you are immediately presented with NINE doors (only six in the original btw, goes to show how much of a remake it really is), half of which are locked. That's only the first room! If you get a key or crest something by means of solving a puzzle, you'll have to figure out which door or object to put it in. And you pass by some inaccessible areas many times, making you want to get into them even more. With RE4 they might as well have removed any keys or puzzles. As long as you went FORWARD and picked up any stuff along the way, you didn't have to think about anything. It was just a ride. An awesome bloody ride, that is....but still, it felt way too linear. No mystery.
