Leisure Suit Larry bloke returns News

PC PlayStation 2 Xbox Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Tom Bramwell

14 May, 2006

Leisure Suit Larry creator Al Lowe has formed a new company and is doing an "action comedy" game called Sam Suede: Undercover Exposure for PC and consoles, due out in 2007.

"I needed a good reason to abandon my strenuous life of pina coladas and golf, and this is it," said Lowe. His new outfit, iBase Entertainment, is a joint venture with former Mindscape chap Ken Wegrzyn, who presumably needs something to do when he's not spelling his name out to people on the telephone.

Rather like LSL, Sam Suede's an everyday bloke thrust into extraordinary circumstances, although judging by the setting, those circumstances won't be too extraordinary for fans of Lowe's other work.

While attending "Mystery Week Fantasy Camp" on Ecstasy Island, the resort's co-owner is murdered and Sam gets involved in the resulting whodunnit, according to the release.

"Ken and I are creating a game that's big on humor, and provides the fun and exploration lacking in many of today's games," says Lowe.

"I've always wanted to play a game about a common man thrust into extraordinary circumstances and surrounded by beautiful women. Sam Suede is that game."

Extremely good news. Let's hope the games will be as much fun as the first three Larry games.

Am I write in thinking that Al Lowe had nothing to do with the most recent LSL game? Y'know, the one that seemed to sell but had reviewers running from it's crapiness.

LSL 3 was a great adventure game... the sex theme was just something surrounding some of the best storytelling and puzzle solving ever conceived.

Yes LSL3 was the pinnacle of the series. The first three games were a fantastic trilogy, which story-wise was supposed to be the only ones. Demand was high enough to make a fourth game, but since the story was pretty much conclusive in LSL3 they skipped LSL4 and called the game LSL5 instead - which contained a lot of jokes adressing the missing LSL4.

LSL5 wasn't that good a game, but they more than made up for it in LSL6 and 7 ("Shape Up or Slip Out" and "Love for Sail").

Al Lowe also created the western themed adventure game Freddy Pharkas - Frontier Pharmacist, and the more familyoriented game Torrin's Passage.

I hope he succeeds in this game too, but so far his quality-statistics are rather good.

So did he form this new company because the old one wasn't bothered about doing more LSL games?

LSL was killed by the last couple of gawd awful games al had no control over.

That said, i've just checked out the trailer for the game here:

I'll let you all come to your own conclusions on this one..

smelly: last couple of games he had no control over? As far as I remember, Magma Cum Laude was the eighth in the series, and last one Al worked on was Love for Sail, which was LSL7, which was very good.

Sierra drop from adventure games, Larry suffered the same fate as the GK and Quest(s) series.

Its good news since Al have a very good sense of humor but I fear about gameplay.
