Doom movie backing away

Seems fitting.

The Doom movie's own UAC, Universal Pictures, has revealed that the game's silver screen adaptation will make its cinematic debut on October 21st in the US.

The news comes courtesy of a pop-up (rather appropriately, given the nature of "BOO! III") on the UP website, ruling out previous June 24 and August 5 estimates.

The movie's journey to cinemas has been pretty broken up already, with several false starts, and fans have yet to slap eyes on any form of trailer - with only the hyperbolic outpourings of The Rock, one of the cast members, to go on.

Apparently he's going to play Sarge. Karl Urban and Rosamund Pike are also mooted to appear - the former in a central role - under Andrzej Bartkowiak's direction, working from a Dave Callaham script.

According to reports - and mainly IMDB - the film will see a special forces unit answering a distress call from a science lab on the planet Olduvai, only to discover that mutants are killing off the population.

Also, it will have the BFG in it. Although there's no word on the Soul Cube or any other potentially fun stuff.

Finally, in an interesting touch, it looks like some of the characters are named after members of staff at developer id Software, with Robert Russel lined up to play a "Dr. Carmack" and a pair of Willits also on the cast list.

What price a cameo from John Romero? We reckon he could play a scientist following a successful stint as Denzil Dexter in The Fast Show.

What makes anyone think this movie could possibly be good? The fact that Uwe Boll is not involved changes very, very little.
  • Blerk #2 7 years ago

It will be beyond awful. That is all.

  • Amajiro #6 7 years ago

The Rock as sarge? Now that's actually a pretty good piece of casting.
  • Tweakmonkey #7 7 years ago

They just can't help themselves. I won't be going to see this.
  • Derblington #8 7 years ago

The Rock should be the central role, but he's not :(
  • jellyhead #9 7 years ago

awwwww, you've ruined it now Lutz!
That was going to be the surprise "twist" at the end.

I asked Rosamund Pike out a couple of years ago (just after Die Another Day came out) when I saw her in the West End. She said no...

I can see the tagline for the posters now `we spent a fortune on the title only to create a space age turd` only to appear on dvd a few weeks later and then as official toilet paper so you can wipe your arse on it as you cry at what could of been.

Can you imagine wat they could have created? imagine the demons in doom 3 brought to life with amazing CGI, why cant these nobody directors get it right, allways bloody changing stuff. couldnt they have opened up a forum themselves and just asked the fans wat they would like to see in the movie ah dam them!
  • jellyhead #13 7 years ago

The fans would reply they wanted Doom!
    Hell! not Huntingdon! ffs.

There again i imagine some of the Doom3 movie threads are scary places full of fan_boi's with unreasonable demands and insane ideas (or is that inane ideas?)
  • Xerx3s #14 7 years ago

Doom is and has always been created around the idea of "I have a BIG FUCKING GUN and a louzy hairday and there are a whole lot of cunts from hell fuckin up me day".

And that concept is fun, BUT IT FUCKIN LACKS THE STORYLINE TO MAKE A BLOODY FILM BASED ON IT! Hey, but then again, so do 99% of all the hollywood "blockbuster" films nowadays...

/me votes for a ban on hollywood crap and promotion of european/asian films/anime.
  • Genji #15 7 years ago

Yes, I'm all for the promotion of European/Asian/anime crap over Hollywood crap.

Using actual demons means it has some sort of repligious connotation which any self respecting anodyne movie design committee will steer clear of for risk of offending the religious demongraphic. (imho)
  • wattoo #17 7 years ago

    demongraphic...nice one

all those red horned trident equipped bastards writing in to Points of View because their images have been tarnished by the movie

Not going to happen. Can't use the phrase 'space age turd' in connection to film. George Lucas already has that TM'd for the DVD box-set of the first three SW eps.

i fort the second resi evil movie was quite gud loads of nice action
  • spiny #20 7 years ago

it can only be on the level of a bad case of food poisioning combined with a toilet paper shortage.
  • asphaltcowboy #21 7 years ago

I've had confirmation that the rumours about it being on earth and with zombies, are not true, so don't worry :) And this was from someone working on the CG, so I think they'd know :)

Really? I broke the (pirated) DVD after seeing the church-scene action.

And for this film? Well, just as long as it's better than the AWEFUL AWEFUL AWEFUL street fighter movie, then I'm happy.

Yes, but see, this is the thing. You clearly can't spell, so your opinion is worth about as much as an old, broken Atari home console... about 50 pence, give or take a little. Most of us who can clearly demonstrate a grasp on the english language could see past the pretty lights and explosions, at a film underneath that was really quite poorly constructed, your average hollywood horror - lots of pretty stuff, no substance to back it up.

... or, in your language Burton2000... "Iz sh1t..."
