Record and share PS3 footage?

Harrison drops hints, says elements of Killzone exceed trailer.

Sony's working on a way of recording PS3 game footage and sharing it with your friends online, according to Phil Harrison.

Speaking to the Official PlayStation Mag in an excerpt on the semi-official Three Speech blog, Harrison said that it was the plan for a specific, as-yet unannounced title, but hinted that it was in Sony's thoughts in a general way too.

"We're actually already working on it now," he said when asked about sharing video footage. "There are two ways to do it. One is as pure video actually saved direct from the gameplay experience, but that creates quite a large data cloud.

"The more efficient way of doing it is to record game input and then share that to each user. We are doing that in a very innovative way on a game that we haven't shown anybody yet," he revealed.

And speaking of video footage, Harrison also reckons that production on Killzone - one of the infamous trailers shown during Sony's E3 2005 conference - will put it in a position to be shown off in 2007.

"With Killzone, the expectation internally and externally is very high," he said, "and I won't show it until it's going to exceed people's expectations. It will be next year before we show it again, but it's coming along very well.

"The team are working very hard, they know exactly what they have to do and there's no doubt they will achieve it, but there's nothing to be served by something that doesn't satisfy my goals for the project.

"I can tell you, though, that some elements already exceed the trailer," he added.

That would be a great feature.

Think of the possibilities for Pro Evo!

Forget about Killzone, and you'll be alot happier when they show it. :p

The game footage idea is brilliant though. I wonder what the game will be, "create your own cartoon"?

    My thoughts exactly.

As for the film, no surprise, days after bungie released first speculation on it's new match capture system.

The only FPS I've played that worked well with a pad was Timesplitters 2.

PS3 supports keyboard and mouse right ? So just adjust the look sensitivity and plug in a mouse and I'm good to go.

    The graphics? ;)

I for one fully believe that KZ2 will look better than the trailer.

He didn't mention the frame-rate though did he?

Nope. But its menu is going to blow you away. It'll be like no menu you've ever seen before. The full power of the Cell chip will be utilised to ensure that spinning, 3D menu items will literally kick your face off.

Well, perhaps I'm being overly optimistic, but I can't help feeling the interactive elements will probably exceed those of the trailer.
  • Steroyd #12 5 years ago

This is worthy of a 100 comments. :)

Love the Pro Evo esque possibiities for a normal games, just hope it isn't wasted on a FPS.
  • BootLace #13 5 years ago

"What the monkey is a 'data cloud'?"

It's where they hid the Enterprise to avoid the Klingons, maybe...
  • king_skins #14 5 years ago

@ disc: or you move away from a precanned animation system and have it all computed on the fly...

Also with the making movies of your game. If its only saving the input then the play back would be limited to the people who own the game. So it wouldn't be as useful as recording the output, although the recording of the output would create a huge file.

    oh you're one of those

I remember when certain individuals on here, banged on and on about the killzone trailer. ITS ALLREALTIME! PS3 IS THE REAL NEXTGEN!!! i hope those same individuals, will not get roped in again by sony's lies.

  • Steroyd #17 5 years ago

I bet you'd look at me like a freak of nature if i said i enjoyed the first Killzone huh?

Only when you get a good run through with no glitches mind you.

While we can't be sure who thought of it first, Bungie is reportedly incorporating the ability to record and share gameplay with others in Halo 3.
  • drumbaby #19 5 years ago

PS3 is going to rock, and you knows it, clarts.

This has been around for ages! PES and FIFA have always allowed you to save replays and most sports games to. Battlefield 2 allows you to record you sessions (on some servers) and I think Quake3 did to.

This is hardly a new feature.
  • Rich72 #21 5 years ago

don't understand people who can't use a pad for a shooter.... never had a problem myself and some of the skilled Halo 2 players are, unfortuneately for me, a hell of a lot better. Doesn't a keyboard and mouse make things overly easy?

killzone bloody killzone who gives a shit about killzone? its like hyping the sequel to 50 cent bulletproof they are both decidedly below average and no amount of spitshine is going to change that. what the hell have Guerilla ever done to suggest that they can make a game with good gameplay let alone a game worth hyping? lets just forget about it till they prove themselves cos as of right now they are nothing but a developer who made a shit game.
  • Forebodin #23 5 years ago

king_skins, but what about sharing them with others in a lobby? Feel free to 'old' me if I'm wrong.
  • TheBard #24 5 years ago

Meh. I don't care for recordable gameplay stuff. Sure, there would be some vids worth seeing... but can you even begin to imagine how much crap would be released on the network? I miss the old days where you could just play with your console. Today, you're fucked if you don't have internet on your console, because you're unable to update your games to something actually playable.
  • Steroyd #25 5 years ago

Meh!! I like Guerilla, the first level of Killzone was very good, but what dogged it down was the reptitveness, the glitches and the inconsistancy of what the first level offered I guess Black picked off what Killzone was promising to be.

Right now i'm enjoying Killzone Liberation and i can't wait until they upload the infrastructure multiplayer patch. :)

If i remember right Guerilla PR went out of their way to say they offered something different to Halo, trying to kill the Hype/Comparisons.

But umm seriously, I like the idea of sharing game footage.
  • Hughes. #28 5 years ago

For one side or the other, the eventual appearance of Killzone will make some people feel pretty stupid. The way Motorstorm re-emerged after months of absolute silence makes me think I know which side.
  • Psychotext #29 5 years ago

Disc: You know, I had you marked as a fanboy to be baited but it seems that you're as critical of all the consoles as I am. =)
  • peterfll #30 5 years ago

You can do this on the 360 version of Burnout Revenge, so I hope Mr H doesn't somehow think this is breaking new ground.

I will deride him for his usage of the term "data cloud" as I can personally verfy this term is NOT used by anyone remotely related to gaming or the IT industry. Perhaps's that's where his head is.
  • captainrentboy #31 5 years ago

Wow sharing game footage?I for one can't wait, because I always used that feature in Burnout Revenge on the 360....And by always I mean never, not once. It's just not that exciting.

Region free Pro Evolution Soccer 7 on the PS3 in October 2007. Can't wait.
  • Rodster #35 5 years ago

The first Killzone was absolute garbage and I'm not expecting anything more from Killzone2 or The Getaway on the PS3.
  • old_skool #36 5 years ago

And here a pic of a 3.5" drive connected with the PS3

    http://i1 17.photobucket.com/albums/o58/n...

    Edit > note it's a 320Gig Drive
    Edited by 1 at 13/11/06 @ 18:37
  • spongebob #37 5 years ago

That's pretty nifty. Too bad the Xbox 360 can't have a 320Gb HD. Or whatever.
  • LOLLERS #38 5 years ago

Does he mean Replays? This is hardly groundbreaking.
  • old_skool #39 5 years ago

Yeah , nifty especially since it comes out with a 2.5" drive . Personally though I wouldn't upgrade the drive . I've already have a few PC and laptops and it becomes unfeasible having so many big drives everywhere . So I built a NAS server so all my content is centralised .
  • Psychotext #40 5 years ago

old skool: Wouldn't be too hard to make a blanking plate for the PS3 that has the serial ata and power connectors. That would be pukka. :)
  • old_skool #41 5 years ago

yeah , an eSata bracket would be painless (though you might have to make a little hole somewhere) . The PS3 really does lend itself to interesting possibilities...
  • vames #42 5 years ago

PS3 WILL BE KICKING BUTT WHEN KILLZONE HITS. IT'S GONNA KILL HALO YOU HEAR YOU ME
  • NthSimulachum #43 5 years ago

Anyone reminded of Goebelles? Or that Saddam Hussein propagandist?

    It's just getting tiresome now.
  • SeesThroughAll #44 5 years ago

WHEN KILLZONE HITS. IT'S GONNA KILL HALO YOU HEAR YOU ME

It's not exactly the first time we hear that, now, is it?
  • SeesThroughAll #45 5 years ago

Does he mean Replays? This is hardly groundbreaking.

It is innovative if it's independent of the game. Which sounds like something very difficult to implement. Then again, why would I want to just watch my friends' replays??
  • vames #46 5 years ago

It will happen this time around. KILLZONE WILL PAWN ALL
  • Psychotext #47 5 years ago

Vames: I'm not sure people will pawn their PS3s when Killzone comes out... but I bow to your greater knowledge.
  • bonker #48 5 years ago

This is an interesting, and I suspect revealing, piece of news.

I think it shows how Sony are desperately trying to get one over on MS re online facilities.

It's a cool feature but hardly earth-shattering. Anyway, the more they try and outdo each other (there's some monster egos at play here - it ain't all dollars and cents) the better it is for all of us punters ...
  • spongebob #49 5 years ago

I find this vames troller mildly amusing.

But it's just too bad because Halo didn't do anything for me on Xbox, Killzone did nothing for me on PS2 and I am not too interested in Resistance either. It's just the genre... I am waiting for something else than space fps madness. Something more exotic and innovative..

    PS. Psychotext, awesome joke :)

hughes. "For one side or the other, the eventual appearance of Killzone will make some people feel pretty stupid. The way Motorstorm re-emerged after months of absolute silence makes me think I know which side."

    LOL

i dont want to sound like a fanboy hater(i love them), but i had to comment this statment.
Ok, Motorstorm looks very good, almost impressive, but i suggest that you take a good look at the 2005 trailer, again.

  • Hughes. #51 5 years ago

@vames, no matter how good Killzone 2 may or may not eventually look, there is no guarantee it will be a good game. The PS2 original had some arse-achingly dull sections, although it did get better later on.

    @BillGaitas

Ignoring your cheap use of the "f" word to dismiss anything I might say, I actually never saw it at the time because as it was universally panned as fake there seemed little point. But, after Motorstorm re-emerged I thought it worth checking out, as Motorstorm had recieved almost identical derision. Apart from the animations (which have also been noticably simplified in Motorstorm, which remans a visual treat) I fail to see what is supposed to be so impossible.
  • GitSomE_UK #52 5 years ago

    @Vames

Yeah but no but yeah but No Halo 3 will be the best game on the PS3 evah cos Tommy Knobles told me so.
  • vames #53 5 years ago

@hughes. Ur correct. But i think the ps2 killzone was good just the glitches and stuff. People hate it because it never over powered halo (which i think is over rated) and they never tried it out. The game has ambition and i think the ps3 will bring it out.
  • Hughes. #54 5 years ago

I hope it does, Liberation is pretty good stuff on the PSP, so Guerilla are capable of making something playable, I just hope the frame-rate and texture loading hold up better than in the arly levels of the PS2 game.
  • BillGaitas #55 5 years ago

    @hughes.

almost everything. I would say that of the 1:20 presentation, about 1 minute is still in the land of dreams.

And the reason why i called you a fanboy is because the Killzone2 trailer was allways the most impressive, and by far: wich means that to believe that that sort of graphics will be reached in this generation is, at least, very close to fanboism.

  • Hughes. #56 5 years ago

I tend be very careful about how free I am with the "f" word as it's for many it's a easy way to avoid having an actual reply, how you use it is a matter for your own conscience. However, I didn't rule out that, come the day, one of the people feeing very stupid might be me.

Whilst I'm no expert on the power required, everything after the hopper touches down looks entirely doable, to me, at least to an extent that is recognisably a comparable experience, like Motorstorm. And, having seen Gears of War in motion I don't see why it wouldn't be doable on 360 either.

Pick the fanboy bones out of that, if you feel so inclined.

    >"While we can't be sure who thought of it first, Bungie is reportedly incorporating the ability to record and share gameplay with others in Halo 3."

    Na-a.
Sony have been thinking of it for so many years now (through some sort of unimaginable way that they haven't imagined yet, with a game that hasn't been developed yet), that the ps3network had to send a terminator back in time (powered by the cell ofcourse) to kill kitaragi"
  • The-Bodybuilder #59 5 years ago

    >"PS3 WILL BE KICKING BUTT WHEN KILLZONE HITS. IT'S GONNA KILL HALO YOU HEAR YOU ME"

It better do, considering how old halo is now.
Let's hope it beats H2 though (atleast).
  • Glitch #60 5 years ago

All the comments made by PS3 bosses are being pushed out to have an impact on 360 sales of xmas, they just want you to wait and buy a PS3. good luck to the fools that listen. /ignore Phil Harrison
  • Steroyd #61 5 years ago

I personally think the Half Life series is the benchmark for FPS.

wasn't H2 worse than H1 with the online being the saviour.
  • texx #62 5 years ago

so its like 3 years ago on pgr2 where you could upload your ghost where your friends could download it ,watch the laps or even ace against the ghost, who says innovation is dead
  • viperfoxbat #63 5 years ago

If they use the Unreal Engine 3 then it's possible because that engine rocks. Gears of War is proof that engine is the one to use for Killzone 2.
  • YourMessageHere #64 5 years ago

The only person I've ever known who actually watched replays of games was a die-hard Quake 1 DM addict; other than the obsessive and/or ultracompetitive, (who'd likely find another way anyhow if this wasn't a feature) who has the time to watch replays? I'd rather play a game than watch someone else play one, and if I am watching someone else play one I'd rather they were there with me so I can talk to them.
  • Baz_Dude #65 5 years ago

    God damn it.

Does Sony ever think what they are saying before they say it. The say Ridge Racer will look amazing but the 360 version had better texture and much nicer visuals than it. Maybe they should just shut the F%$& up and when they have some proof then they can say something.
  • Steroyd #66 5 years ago

    disc:

oh I see I wouldn't know because when I had an Xbox H:CE and H2 were the first two games I got for it, told myself I'd play through the first one before I started the second...
