More Mario Kart DS details News

DS News by Ellie Gibson

13 October, 2005

With just six weeks to go until the game launches in Europe, Nintendo has revealed some more info about the multiplayer modes we can expect to find in Mario Kart DS.

There will of course be a DS Download option so you can play against up to seven opponents, even if only one person has a copy of the game. There are three multiplayer modes - Racing, which offers you a choice of eight tracks, Balloon Battle and Shine Thief, both of which have three arenas.

If you've got a game card you can choose your own character and use personalised icons, but if you're downloading from another player, you'll have to play as Shy Guy. All DS Download races and battles are limited to the 100cc engine class.

So if you want the full range of character, track and engine class choices, you'll all need a copy of the game. The other advantage of multi-card play is that each player's win/loss ratio is saved and tracked, so you can see who's the overall champion. Plus you can trade ghost data, and players you race will be automatically added to your Friend roster so you can play against them via the new Wi-Fi Connection service.

Speaking of which, up to four players will be able to race simultaneously via Wi-Fi. You can race against your Friends only, Rivals (players of your skill level, as identified by the Nintendo servers), Recent Opponents, Regional Racers (players in your country only), or World Racers (players anywhere in the whole wide world).

All tracks will be available, and each player will vote for their course of choice - it's majority rule. If there's a tie, however, a track will be chosen at random. You can play as whichever character you like when online, and use your personalised player icons too.

So how do you get connected? Well, your first option is to go to an official Nintendo hotspot - still no word on where we can expect to find these, unfortunately. Or you can use your own wireless router, if you've got one. If not, you might like to invest in the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector which links up to your PC's broadband connection.

Nintendo has got an extra treat in store for those who are planning to buy a DS when Mario Kart arrives - well, providing you live in the US or are prepared to import, anyway. From November 28 stores will be stocking a special Mario Kart bundle, containing a copy of the game, a Hot Rod Red DS, a chequered flag wrist strap and some decal stickers to decorate your handheld with. It'll retail for $149.99 - around $15 less than the price of the DS and game if bought separately.

No such bundle has been announced for Europe so far and Nintendo was unavailable for comment, but we live in hope. Mario Kart DS will hit our shops on November 25, the same day as the Wi-Fi Connection service launches.

This sounds like it'll be a lot of fun!

Shame you're restricted to 100cc for download play though..............

The top quote will be for an ad-hoc network, I believe, and the bottom one would be relating to playing over the net.

I second that "Eh?"

Reduced connectivity with multiple carts? Doesn't sound right to me.

bunglebonces first point makes perfect sense, but I don't share the same excitement over the wriststrap - it's about as exciting as the Naruto stylus holder my mate foolishly forked out for then lost. Dumbass.

Right.. its simple.

If your in same room with people. You can play against up to 7 mates with ds's but ONLY ONE of you needs to own the game.

If your playing over your internet connection (i.e. to people not in same room as you), you can only play against 3 other people at the same time (each WILL need the game installed). I presume this is due to natural net lag, etc etc.

Playing against other people in the same room can pass info around MUCH quicker than over the interweb (which makes sense if you think about it).

Why do people have problems understanding such a simple concept?!?

Well I read it as;

Mulit carts = 8 players in same room wifi - no limitations
Multi carts = 4 players wifi internet
Single cart = 8 players same room wifi - but limited to 100cc and 1 choice of character (shyguy)

So the single cart is restricted, but that seems fair enough to me..........

Whoever has a cart on the single cart mode gets to pick any character. Those who don't play as Shyguy.

It's same as MK Super Circuit on GBA. You could link up 4 players and play 4 players battle or race, or 2 players doing a championship together.

If you only had 1 cart between 4 players each player could only be Yoshi and the trackside graphics were simplified. In the DS version the game is cut down in link play with one cart for the same reason that it was on GBA: the whole game has to load into RAM for the players that don't have a cart.

Oh and we should rejoice that the wireless play with only 1 cart feature of the DS works so well (8 player bomberman with one cart is amazing). We tried the same with Burnout Revenge on PSP the other day and it was pointless, it took far longer to download the race to the other PSP than it did to actually play the race!!

It says you can race against Regional Racers (players in your country only) amongst other options, however does Regional Racers mean if you buy a US copy, you'll be racing against US players in this mode or will it use your ISP locality i.e the UK ?

Why do consol manufacturers always punish the early adopters? We get the boring standard colours at a higherprize and mr Wait-and-See gets rewarded for his caution with fancy wriststraps, cool colours and value packs.

I want a skill based racer with party elements!!! NOT a party game with racing elements!!!!

From what I've read it could well be the best MK game ever, close to SMK (and GBA version), with d-pad control, hop-based sliding, a mix of new and classic courses (Mario Circuit 1!!) and a constant (zoomable) overhead map view. With the addition of online racing, it's a SMK fan's dream come true... :)

This is looking promising, but time will tell. I just hope Nintendo have learned that Mario Kart with elevation (N64, GC) just simply doesn't work. SNES and GBA versions were flat and gave a much greater sense of speed which is what the karting was about - and red-shelling your mates. d:-)

Sir_tripod, I agree to some extent that the lack of elevation gives the older games a simplicity and purity that the newer games have lost a little.

However I feel that if all the tracks were completely flat then it would become a bit samey and boring after a while. I'd rather see a variety of flat and hilly tracks to compete on.

As this Mario kart DS appears to have a 'best-of' aproach to track selection it looks like I'll be happy!!! :)
