PSP heads to Bliss Island

Or vice versa.

Codemasters is set to bring Pompom Software's Bliss Island PC game to PlayStation Portable this winter, adding wireless multiplayer modes to the popular mini-game compilation.

Bliss has been available via web-portals like www.funsta.com for a while - and there's a trial version there for those of you curious enough to look into it.

Like that game, the PSP version features a large number of mini-games - over 80 says Codies - with simple controls, like Fruit Slam Dunk where the idea is to bounce fruit into the mouth of a monster. Other examples include saving flowers from swarms of aphids, and smashing boulders to pieces.

The best way to get an idea of how it works is to try out the PC version, which runs through RealArcade, or you can check out some screenshots of the PSP version.

    *public service annoucement*

Playing the PC version - lovely 'though it is - won't tell you much, as the PSP version has a completely different control system.

They'd HAVE to really re-factor the gameplay for the PSP controls. From the trailer, it looks like a completely different game, but with common art assets. Don't even know if Pompom have anything to do with the PSP version. Done by a Codies in-house team, maybe?

[Edit] Hmm. When this started out, it was going to be a "missile commander" update, in the same way that Mutant Storm was an update of Robotron, and Space Tripper was an update of defender. Back on the Pompom forums, mike and miles asked for suggestions. I made a few about having "missles" that you could "bouce" and "juggle" for more points before actually exploding them. Mike came back to me a bit later and said that they'd come up with something very different as a result. After trying the beta, I didn't really hear anything from them. So it's great to see that it's gone on to a full release :)

This PSP version doesn't look like there's even a cursor. It's a totally different game. It still looks really cool though. God knows that using that PSP nub to control a cursor for this would be horrible, so it was the right decision.

[Edit 2] PsychicTeeth tells me that Curve (used to be Blue 52) did the PSP version.
