Pokémon DS dates, details

Plus news on Pokémon Ranger.

Nintendo DS duo Pokémon Diamond and Pearl will be released simultaneously in Japan next year, according to reports, while a third game named Pokémon Ranger is also expected to appear.

Reports of a fourth game, "Pokémon Until They Give Us More Money", are thought to be rubbish jokes made by lame hacks at about 7:45 in the morning.

Nintendo has yet to respond to our request for comment (and probably won't now we've done that "Poke Them On" gag for the 400th time), but the news of Diamond and Pearl's release plans were broken by Comic Korokoro in Japan, GameSpot reports.

Pokémon Ranger, it adds, should have some sort of connection to a new Pokémon movie and TV anime series - although obviously there's no word on whether we'll see any of that over here.

The same report also shed some light on details of Diamond and Pearl, which is the product of developers at Pokémon Company and series veterans Game Freaks.

Apparently the games head off into a new land, but will feature familiar Pokémon. New Pokémon are currently being considered, but not new types, and Pokémon from the movies will also make an appearance.

We're also told to expect some degree of connectivity for GBA and GameCube titles, allowing for previous Pokémon to be ported over - presumably by whacking Game Boy carts in at the same time as the DS card.

Finally, Diamond and Pearl will take advantage of the touch screen during play, and will support up to 16-player Wi-Fi in some sense or other.

Would the microphone functionality come in use. I mean calling out the names of the Pokemon or is it unable to pull it off?
Nontheless I suppose it would sell by the bucket load.

I'm actually looking forward to this... Pokemon on the GBA (my first contact with Pokemon) was a pleasant surprise, much better than I would have expected. (A lot more complex, too... pretty embarrassing to see six-year-olds handle it with ease.) And I expect the dual-screen and touch pad will do nicely for a sort-of-RPG.

I'm still hoping the pokemon XD lives up to the gba game in the same way as zelda did when it went 3d.

Judging by the previews though, im gonna be disapointed :-(

I'm just hoping they actually bother to record proper samples for each Pokémon this time round, instead of the horrible GameBoy quality calls they've been using since forever.. Even Pokémon Colosseum didn't bother with proper voices :(

Edit: Oh, and EG: Your game information link is broken, it points at P.N.03 at the moment.

Actually I'd rather they stick with the traditional sounds. Fair enough the cries for the original 151 are undeniably terrible (as are those for the next 100) but the newer species don't sound all that bad - some of them are vaguely plausible as animal cries as opposed to the ridiculousness of the cartoon versions saying their own name and nothing else.

Prince hasn't been "sex crazed" since he converted to the Jehova Witnesses brand of Christianity a few years ago.

That said, I am considering Pokémon Emerald, currently available for the GBA on import - is it any good? Last I played was Gold which I never finished because I could not be bothered to grind the landscape looking for a stinking Dragon-type monster I needed to enter the cave for the last badge.

Smelly - I cannot see any advancement beyond Colosseum. If you played that, you've likely played XD.

I would, to be honest, be slightly more interested if the 'mon (lame) talked properly (as far as they can).

I would be much more interested if you could catch 'em all Pkmn Snap style, with the buggers ACTUALLY VISIBLE AND OUT IN THE OPEN, rather than SHITTY static, random encounters with a random creature. It'd be so much better if you had a Snap-style mechanism of luring and all the consequences of pissing off a Scyther or something like that, rather than walking through some grass, having your screen wobble and being introduced to a bland battle screen.

Alas, they have confirmed the reappearance of the godawful Shadow Pokémon. I have never understood that decision. Even the first time. It was Rubbish.
