Devil May Cry goes back to its roots for big E3 unveiling

The third instalment in Dante's series is being prepped for a big E3 announcement, and American sources close to Capcom tell us that it's more like the original than the sequel.

Devil May Cry 3 will take centre stage alongside Resident Evil 4 at Capcom's pre-E3 trade event on May 10th, US sources close to the publisher told Eurogamer this week.

Interestingly, one source added that Devil May Cry 3 "goes back to the original" in terms of concept, which would seem to tie in with rumours that the game is currently in development under the direction of the original Devil May Cry team, and not those who worked on the widely panned follow-up.

Capcom Eurosoft could neither confirm nor deny Devil May Cry 3's existence when quizzed this morning, telling us, "Until a game is officially announced by our Japanese office, any mentions of such a game are no more than rumours."

Last month, a report on a kung fu website claimed that martial artist Stephanie Cheeva was contributing motion capture work to the project, something which Capcom has not refuted.

Capcom traditionally waits until the last possible moment to announce its E3 line-up, so you can expect to hear more about Devil May Cry 3 around this time next month.

Anything's got to be an improvement on DMC2.

So, will the IMHO best action game of all times really get a worthy sequel? Because DMC2 was not it.

...maybe if Shinji Mikami would work on it again...

So since its from Capcom, will this be the Championship Edition or Turbo, maybe Alpha....?
    :)

'Devil may Cry Super Powerfist Alpha Turbo Fighter Evolution Ninjitsu Dragon Warrior - Third Edition'

'Devil may Cry Super Powerfist Alpha Turbo Fighter Evolution Ninjitsu Dragon Warrior - Third Edition'

    make that:

"Devil May Cry Hyper Extreme Power Alpha Turbo Championship Edition Type - Y"

edit: Has to be said, after DMC2... is this one of those, "Never ride a one-trick pony twice" kinda games? What can they actually do to improve the series? Except make it bigger... which isn't likely...

I've never played DMC2 - what was so bad about it?
  • Kami #8 8 years ago

Nothing. But there was nothing GOOD about it other than the graphics.

It was same old, same old. We'd done it before, it had been done better, and the whole game was over far too quickly (Although there were secret outfits).

DMC2 was sadly not as revolutionary as it's predecessor. DMC2 was certainly a looker, but the game was dull. The enemies so-so. The bosses easy.

There was nothing neccessarilly BAD about DMC2. It just wasn't very good either, it didn't really expand on things much except some wall running...

If this makes sense then woohoo. Because it's very hard to say where DMC2 went wrong... maybe it was too simplified. Maybe there was too much emphasis on showing off more than challenging. Whatever it was... DMC3 will need to be something special.

DMC2 was bad. Dull graphics, nothing like the first one. Game play was utterly boring, it felt like they flooded the levels with enemies just for the sake of it. Bosses.. oh dear. Too easy, although they take eons to kill, so by the time you do killed them you'll probably be fast asleep.
    Those egyptians levels.. yawn.

The only great thing about it was dante and the new extra moves, but even that didn't save the day.

With Ninja Gaiden on the box they'll have to come up with something really stunning.

'Devil may Cry Super Powerfist Alpha Turbo Fighter Evolution Ninjitsu Dragon Warrior - Third Edition'

    Hmmm.. maybe that'll do it.

'Twas still playable Bunny. Like I said, there was nothing really wrong wth the game bar the simplicity and small size. It just didn't do anything very well.

You're right. With Ninja Gaiden, and the huge popularity of Dynasty Warriors, DMC3 has a bit of work to do.DMC, the original, was rather unique. It was polished, fun and the combos were always impressive. DMC2 lost that in between two characters. Lucia was so not as hot as Trish. Though you could play with a Trish model (Oh, that could have been so better put - but what they hey. Admit it. We definately would).

Personally, I'd like to see Trish have a more active role. She's a great character and she deserves more than a side role and then forgotten about.

But yeah. DMC3 needs to be good. It has competition. Heres hoping it turns out to be good...

(Though, why did they never use the title, "Devil Never Cry"? Kinda liked that... maybe DMC3 will be Devil Never Cry...)

The new (DMC2) Dante was not that good character like the first one.
The second Dante just wanted to act cool, but his lame text and reactions made him dull. He had no jokes. The first one made good jokes. Like when he was chating with the Phantom, knocked on it's head and beat it after laughing out loud. :)
And thist was not the only one stylish moment in the game.

The second one only had one good moment: "let leave it to fate" and drops the coin...

I think the original was the best game of it's type ever made (having not played Ninja Gaiden yet). Dante made you feel like a bad-ass, kicking demon butt all over the place with grace.

It's a good thing the original team is back, and with the new competition from games like Ninja Gaiden, the bar has been raised, let's hope they can top it yet again.

Only a month till we get Ninja Gaiden.

    Actually.
We were really ripped off with the wait for it.

Well I dunno about you lot, but I'm offended.
