MotorStorm dev looking to PS4
And talking about MotorStorm's origins.
MotorStorm developer Evolution Studios is putting plans in place for PlayStation 4 development, according to chief executive Martin Kenwright.
"I know people are looking at PS3 now, and I'm not being glib, but we're actually looking at PS4. I'm thinking where will it be in five years, how will we get there? What will the marketplace be like, the games, and who'll be buying them?" he explained recently to our sister site GamesIndustry.biz.
Part one of that interview deals with MotorStorm's origins, after Evolution has established itself on PS2 largely thanks to its licensed World Rally Championship (WRC) games.
"Me and Phil Harrison sat down at a rally event and thought, what five things can we do for PlayStation 3?" Kenwright recalled.
Between them the pair decided that since they were selling huge quantities in the relatively niche rally market, for the PS3 launch they might as well go after the entire driving genre instead.
"We figured, let's take the least cool sector and make it the coolest. We've got no competition, we're new and fresh, it's 'super-size me' racing. And we're not trying to be a me-too game. Because we've always been first or best."
Kenwright also repeated what Insomniac's Ted Price had said about his company's decision to focus on a new title, Resistance, rather than immediately translating Ratchet & Clank to the new PlayStation: "The only time you can launch a new IP is at the start of a life cycle," Kenwright echoed.
Moreover, MotorStorm was built to break through in the USA, because, "America has no idea about us, and we've done some of the best games you've never heard of."
"The last World Rally title was an incredible game and we thought, 'Wait until America gets a load of [MotorStorm].' So we were on a mission, we really were," said Kenwright. "Sony wasn't even on board at this point, I just went ahead and commissioned it and thought, 'We'll tell them later.' Sometimes you have to, you can't wait around, you've got to take risks."

As a weighted suggestion I might agree with him, but as a definitive statement its just not true. I'm sure we can all think of at least one example of new platform specific IP that came out post year one.

I'll keep the fading glimmer of hope that Sony will actually listen to gamers one day, but I truly have been converted to Wii60.

Well, its kind of his job to speculate on those sorts of things. Given how long the full cycle of development can take these days, its worth considering your options a few years in advance.
In this particular instance however I think this little bit of chit chat is actually about raising visibility for Motorstorm, though again that is also part of his job. So whilst I don't necessarily agree with what he said, its not worth getting all angry over.

It ran at about 20fps (at best) and the landscapes looked awfully basic. Next gen my arse; rushed launch title, yes.

The demo on the kiosks is an old build for some stupid reason; they've changed a lot since then, including the frame rate.

However, i'd takea pretty big graphical hit to protect the frame rate (F-Zero X for example) so here's hoping it runs well

Erm, no but it does look like a two or three year old PC game, quality wise anyway. ie sh1te.

None of you have posted a pic which looks better than motorstorm. Until you do so, shut it.
Edit - I never said it was the best looking environment ever, you just assumed that. It simply looks no where near as bad as you are making it out to be.

Admit it, graphically it looks disappointing and is certain a big step down from those original supposed 'game play' videos we saw ages ago...

That's running on a two year old PC. Motorstorm may not look shit, but for the money I'd expect something a little more impressive.

http://ww w.codemasters.co.uk/press/?show... Where's it say that?
It's a cross platform game, probably look as good on the 360 and whatever PC GFX card is out at the time (9900 GTX?)...
I read somewhere that DIRT is due 3rd quarter 07. Not that long off IMO.
Malik... "It's a second generation game. Comparing them is retarded."
Well, if DIRT does make its 2007 release then it'll be out within the first year of the consoles European release.
Second generation? I think not sir.
Why are you defending this game so much? It really does look very average IMO.

And Motorstorm is being released in Japan within the NEXT WEEK. The US and European versions will include online play and are coming Q1 2007, which is before March. Where do you get your information?
What preview are you talking about anyway? Those Gamespot screens? You know GS use the same screens for multiplatform games, unless they are specified for a console right?
I'm defending the game because I think the game looks great, saying it looks Zelda-esque just ruffle my feathers slightly.

No, Sony says PS3's life-cycle will be 10 years and not that PS4 will be out in 10 years. There's a big difference.
PS1 was on the marked for 10 years and PS2 was also planned to be on the marked for 10 years and I will be surprised if this doesn't happen.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
The PS3 doesn't have any discernable processing advantage over the 360. Even if it is a slight one that will come to fruition in 3 years or so, it's NOTHING like the CHASM that Sony was banging on and on and on about.
Motorstorm is an above average racer, nothing more, an yet it's dev is banging on about the PS4! How about making a AAA title for the PS3 first dickwad!
Bloody Sony Ivory Tower Syndrome...AGAIN!
Comment below viewing threshold Show
The Motorstorm screenshots, I've gotta say, look a bit disappointing, but screenshots are so frequently misleading...and anyway, if the trade-off is for increased speed and fluidity, I'd take that over detailed background rocks that will be zipping past at 70mph anyway; as someone said, look at F-Zero X. It's a total cliche, but isn't the gameplay the most important thing here? :S
Also: looking to PS4? But That Analyst said there wouldn't be a PS4!!! Are they implying that analysts might be wrong? Sacrilege!

Maybe I’ll try this ignore button…
Comment below viewing threshold Show
The instant they see some game is a PS3 title, in their minds pops up the word 'Sony' and it reacts instantly to hit the bash button.
Alot of Motorstorm processing power usage is put into the deformable terrain and the way the vehicles react to it.
that DIRT game looks great, but if you look with honest eyes, it's clearly visible that game even has less polygons, but the lighting and desaturated color palette provide it with a more realistic style than Motorstorm.
Here's a DIRT screen with environment rocks. See how low poly those are !?
