MotorStorm dev looking to PS4 News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

12 December, 2006

MotorStorm developer Evolution Studios is putting plans in place for PlayStation 4 development, according to chief executive Martin Kenwright.

"I know people are looking at PS3 now, and I'm not being glib, but we're actually looking at PS4. I'm thinking where will it be in five years, how will we get there? What will the marketplace be like, the games, and who'll be buying them?" he explained recently to our sister site GamesIndustry.biz.

Part one of that interview deals with MotorStorm's origins, after Evolution has established itself on PS2 largely thanks to its licensed World Rally Championship (WRC) games.

"Me and Phil Harrison sat down at a rally event and thought, what five things can we do for PlayStation 3?" Kenwright recalled.

Between them the pair decided that since they were selling huge quantities in the relatively niche rally market, for the PS3 launch they might as well go after the entire driving genre instead.

"We figured, let's take the least cool sector and make it the coolest. We've got no competition, we're new and fresh, it's 'super-size me' racing. And we're not trying to be a me-too game. Because we've always been first or best."

Kenwright also repeated what Insomniac's Ted Price had said about his company's decision to focus on a new title, Resistance, rather than immediately translating Ratchet & Clank to the new PlayStation: "The only time you can launch a new IP is at the start of a life cycle," Kenwright echoed.

Moreover, MotorStorm was built to break through in the USA, because, "America has no idea about us, and we've done some of the best games you've never heard of."

"The last World Rally title was an incredible game and we thought, 'Wait until America gets a load of [MotorStorm].' So we were on a mission, we really were," said Kenwright. "Sony wasn't even on board at this point, I just went ahead and commissioned it and thought, 'We'll tell them later.' Sometimes you have to, you can't wait around, you've got to take risks."

For more on MotorStorm's genesis, check out part one of the gi.biz interview. Part two will appear later this week.

Somebody better tell them that Sony has planned the PS3 to last 10 years, not 5.

As a weighted suggestion I might agree with him, but as a definitive statement its just not true. I'm sure we can all think of at least one example of new platform specific IP that came out post year one.

How ridiculous. Cleary he has nothing better to do with his time if he thinks it's well spent pontificating about what may or may not be the state of play (if you pardon the pun) in 5 years time.

It's wierd, but until I picked up my Wii last night I was still excited about the prospect of getting a PS3. Today I just don't care.

I'll keep the fading glimmer of hope that Sony will actually listen to gamers one day, but I truly have been converted to Wii60.

I can think of a ton of new IP that came out years on from initial launch. But for now I'll point to Sonic.

Well, its kind of his job to speculate on those sorts of things. Given how long the full cycle of development can take these days, its worth considering your options a few years in advance.

In this particular instance however I think this little bit of chit chat is actually about raising visibility for Motorstorm, though again that is also part of his job. So whilst I don't necessarily agree with what he said, its not worth getting all angry over.

Xiphos: Motorstorm was playable at E3 2006 so why wouldn't it run on a PS3 devkit?

jonsaan: Motorstorm? That's a bit unfair considering they are introducing a couple of new things to racing games. Also it looks quite good.

Motorstorm and Resistance in my opinion are the only two release titles that look vaguely special in any way(If you own a 360 already that is)But Motorstorm's trackside details are awfully bland and brown, nice car models mind.

Don't you think Resistance looks a bit bland? It's one of those launch titles that'll be forgotten a month later. How many people are still playing the 360 launch games? I see they've gone budget (in the loosest sense) now.

Played the motorstorm demo on the retail pods in the US.

It ran at about 20fps (at best) and the landscapes looked awfully basic. Next gen my arse; rushed launch title, yes.

The demo on the kiosks is an old build for some stupid reason; they've changed a lot since then, including the frame rate.

FlatOut 2 looks fucking great on PC. Sorry Jedi, but no matter how hard you bang your Sony drum Motorstorm's visuals will continue to be decidedly average. The 360 already has some great-looking games, and it costs a heck of a lot less than Sony's Blu-ray Trojan horse.

Am/Was looking forward to this, but have to say I hope they do tighten up the design a bit before it ships. The rocks are slightly zeldaesque!

However, i'd takea pretty big graphical hit to protect the frame rate (F-Zero X for example) so here's hoping it runs well :)

Ok, the things that stuck in my head from this article were comments like:

"And we're not trying to be a me-too game. Because we've always been first or best.".
""America has no idea about us, and we've done some of the best games you've never heard of."
""The last World Rally title was an incredible game and we thought, 'Wait until America gets a load of [MotorStorm].'

From comments like that, it's easy to see that he does'nt have a short supply of arrogance.

I've posted pics of flat-out 2, it doesn't look incredible. Burnout looks better. Motorstorm doesn't look like a 2 year old PC game, you're delusional if you think so.

None of you have posted a pic which looks better than motorstorm. Until you do so, shut it.

Edit - I never said it was the best looking environment ever, you just assumed that. It simply looks no where near as bad as you are making it out to be.

Admit it, graphically it looks disappointing and is certain a big step down from those original supposed 'game play' videos we saw ages ago...

Bit rich to say the environment looks crap when a supposedly next-gen game has Zelda-esque boulders. And it's still an older game running on an old PC, yet isn't all that far off your next-gen system.

To be fair, gameplay wise it looks a very different game to Flat Out 2. The screenshots for Motor Storm don't do it justice, it looks much better in motion.
However, I'm still not impressed with it. Technically I don't consider this game to be special although it does look pretty good fun I suppose.
