EverQuest grows again News

PC MMO News by Paul Loughrey

12 July, 2006

Sony Online Entertainment has announced a new expansion pack for its long-running MMORPG, EverQuest, available via digital distribution from September.

Hoping to breathe a little new life into the title, which has suffered as a result of the phenomenal success of Blizzard's World of Warcraft, the Serpent's Spine expansion will introduce "the first new player race since the Frogloks were added to the game seven expansions ago".

Known as the Drakkin, the new player race has apparently been "created from human and dragon blood to protect the future of all dragon kind". SOE is promising several colours to choose from, as well as elegant scale markings and horns to add that personal touch to your character. Lovely.

Serpent's Spine will also feature a new starting city, Crescent Reach, which will be filled with everything you'll need to reach level 75 - including merchants, quests, new spells, raids and special abilities.

If that's not enough for your US$ 29.99, they're also chucking in a host of new spells, NPCs, destructible environments and Alternative Advancement abilities, promising a little something for everyone from level 1 to the dizzy heights of level 75.

It's been so long since I played EQ, so excuse if I botch the spelling but scales and horns? Wasn't that the 'Iksar'?

Will it rise to the dizzy heights the Frogloks attained? Will it have the same global cultural impact? Will new branches of study arise in sociology and Marxist criticism concerning the Drakkin's metatextual sub-currents?
