Xbox 360 launch night commentary

We stayed up all night. Recap the fun.

This page will be updated throughout the evening of May 12th BST, transitioning into May 13th, during the early hours of which the Xbox 360 MTV special airs in the US. Keep refreshing. If you've just arrived, read from the lowest update upward. New stuff will be added near the top.

IF YOU'VE JUST JOINED US... - You'll be wanting to read everything on this page from the bottom up, because it's quite entertaining. But before you do anything you should check this video - the OurColony.net "Revelation" - which new favourite-reader redzero linked just after 2AM BST. Delve deeper into the content below and you'll find hardware specs, game confirmations, and layers and layers of subtler details that paint the picture of an exhaustively thought out console launch. Speaking of the launch - it'll be out worldwide this year, as Bill Gates suggested. We'll cobble it all into neater shape Friday morning UK time.

03:29 BST - OH GO ON THEN, ONE MORE - www.xbox360.com is live. Ta ra!

03:14 BST - RIGHT THEN - We still have little idea what happened on MTV (although as we refresh the comments it appears word is filtering onto the net), but there's so much information flooding the Internet that nobody seems to care anyway. After an initial burst of excitement - mostly the sheer ecstasy of release after so much pent up boredom at all the not-actually-denials and tedious obfuscations - we're quieter and more subdued now. Gears of War is a handsome devil, but the rest of the line-up is perhaps what you would have expected. Lots of big guns, shiny visuals, and sequels. And Perfect Dark Zero has not impressed too many people by the looks of it. Hopefully in motion it's a lot more exciting.

As for excitement now, there's a lot more to be had from the hardware itself than the line-up of games unveiled tonight. Hopefully the pre-E3 Xbox 360 conference will shed some light on more original and more inventive franchises - with Halo 3, Project Gotham Racing 3, Dimitri and others apparently absent from tonight's onslaught of US-based coverage. Ignoring the games for a minute though, it's hard not to be overwhelmed by the sheer comprehensiveness of the Xbox 360 concept. There's so much to it.

Calming now, it feels like time for bed. Check back later on Friday for a more deliberate and considered appraisal of what's been announced, and stick with Eurogamer over the next week for our coverage and reaction to the Electronic Entertainment Expo, where all this will be explored as concisely as possible! All there remains to say is thank you to everyone who stopped by this evening. It's been a long trip, but yours truly has very much enjoyed it. And is now very much losing his marbles, repeating himself, and stumbling to discuss himself in the third person. G'night.

03:08 BST - COD MISHAP - I batter correct that one. Oof. Call of Duty 2 Proper is hitting PC and Xbox 360. Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is for PS2, Xbox and GameCube.

02:53 BST - REGAINING A BIT OF COMPOSURE - Yes, all right, the video is very puffy and wannabe-hip. The cynical contingent will rip me to shreds for even mentioning it in a sentence devoid of the word "faux". But I'll leave that to you all. What I'm wondering is: what the hell is happening on MTV? Also, there's a heck of a lot of preview information around and naturally all the specs and other details are out in the open, so one has to wonder how, to go back to what Peter Moore said, the pre-E3 Xbox conference can go any deeper? Any thoughts? Are we going to turn up on Monday to meet Xbox 720?

02:45 BST - PERFECT DARK ZERO SHOTS (FOR REAL) - Here we are. Wow. Kneejerk reaction? I preferred the fakes.

02:33 BST - HERE WE GO THEN - The show must be on in the US by now. And the coverage has just gone up all over. Kotaku's we just read. It clarifies our earlier point about batteries: "The 360's wireless controller will initially be powered with triple-A batteries, but [Jeff] Henshaw said that later versions will likely include rechargeable powerpacks." Kotaku also has a fact sheet, full specs and a comparison between Xbox and Xbox 360. These say pretty much everything.

GameSpot has a lot more specifics, and sets the tone for the big sites. News of Ghost Recon 3, confirmation of our suggestion earlier that Call of Duty: Big Red One is an Xbox 360 title [actually it's proper CoD2; Big Red One is PS2/Xbox/Cube], along with Quake IV on Xbox 360 news (both of those here), a chat with the folks. IGN's gone live too. Same kind of stuff, differing in a few areas. Ditto 1UP.

02:22 BST - NDAS ABOUT TO EXPIRE - All the folks who signed things are about to make our little page look very basic. We'll post links to each site's coverage shortly, and keep you up to date on what's in the MTV special as it airs.

02:02 BST - IT'S ALL TRUE - Lord. That video has everything. The logo was real, the name, there's game footage, testimonials. Shots of people working on the console. Shots of the circuit boards. "A trillion floating point operations per second." And seeing it in someone's arms, it just looks gorgeous. It's very small compared to the previous unit, has a "water-cooled" CPU. Loads of different faceplates shown off in that video too. "The 360 button is how you get to the UI." Xbox 360 Guide seems to be the doorway to absolutely everything you could possibly imagine. It baaaaasically does everything that we've said tonight. The video isn't even finished as I type.

This probably all comes across as very unprofessional, but this is probably the most exciting thing I've experienced as a gamer in ages. Just sitting here at two in the morning hammering out notes as I come across them. For all the tedious shrugging off of "rumour and speculation", this launch has worked wonderfully well with its concert of viral marketing, authorised announcements and leaks. Watch the video.

02:02 BST - PAYDIRT - Check this out. Xbox 360 confirmed. Allard and co. banging on about it. Footage and all. We are the colony! Who would've thought?

01:45 BST - HARDWARE AND LIVE SPECS, MORE GAME DETAILS, ETC - We love Norwegians! Erlend Grefsrud has submitted a fuller translation of the GameReactor text, bringing up a few more points that we have probably heard before but not this evening. These are the hardware specs in the GameReactor piece, according to this chap. Let's do one of those lovely bulletpoint lists, shall we?

  • CPU: 3x IBM PowerPC 3.2GHz
  • GPU: Custom ATI 500MHz (10MB embedded DRAM)
  • Polygon-drawing capacity: 500 millions per second
  • Shader capacity: 48 billion shader operations per second
  • Memory: 512MB GDDR2 RAM
  • Storage Media: Removable and upgradeable hard drive (20GBs), 12x DVD (dual layer), memory cards (64MBs)
  • Ports: Supports up to four wireless joypads at the same time, 3 USB ports (2 in front, 1 in the rear), 2 memory card ports
  • Online: Integrated Live, Ethernet port, WiFi 802.11b enabled, webcam with 1280px resolution
  • Supported Media: DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, WMA CD, MP3 CD, JPEG Photo CD
  • Streaming: Music from media players or a personal computer with Windows XP, movies and photos from the web cam via Live
  • High Definition: All games support 16:9, 720p, 1080i, 5.1 Dolby Digital and personally customized soundtracks

Xbox Live Silver, as was speculated to a certain extent last week, allows you to download content and demos and take part in live-video conversations for free. Xbox Live Gold, meanwhile, let's you actually play. There will apparently be exceptions, however. Massively-multiplayer games, for example, will involve paying the developer directly. Interestingly, there will also be special free trial weekends where all content will be made available to all users for nowt.

The translation also mentions compatibility with the iPod (!), and claims you'll be able to watch TV or movies and still accept Live invitations while that's going on. Furthermore, the European and Japanese launches will follow just "7-10 days" after the US, although a price won't be known until "October or November". And, apparently, Kameo: Elements of Power will be among the first games released by Microsoft.

Our question: what happened to the mulitchannel sond?

01:34 BST - HOUR COLONY - OurColony.net, Microsoft's/or is it's curious/boring viral marketing thing for Xbox 360 seems to be relaunching or something. Wow, that was a rubbish update.

01:28 BST - CELEBS AT THE MTV THING - Eurogamer boss-man Rupert, who is currently drawing up your humble(d) correspondent's P45, points to this page on Xbox.com featuring a rundown of all the celebrities who attended the MTV thing. We've no idea who half of them are. But Kyle Gass of Tenacious D was there, so now we're listening to them.

01:25 BST - THIS IS ALSO A FAKE - This is apparently Half-Life 2 with a gun laid over the top.

A "Mr. Anonymous" adds, on the subject of the other fake PD Zero shots: "They originated from this thread on TeamXbox.com. One user got fed up with mediocre screen shots, so he created his own."

01:13 BST - NOW I'M DELETING THINGS - In order not to look like a prat. Yes, I posted some Perfect Dark Zero shots which were (in the view of many readers, some of whom have called me a "retard") fake. I've also dropped the royal "we". Damn.

Moving away from my own failings, we've (ah, we're back) stumbled across this NewsFactor story credited to the AP (cheers Simon) which carries a few details. Apparently it was linked off Google News.

Quotes of interest: "Microsoft says Xbox 360 will arrive in North American stores by Thanksgiving and in Europe and Japan by year's end." And you'll be "watching movies, playing music, viewing slide shows or holding video chats". Also: "Xbox 360 supports DVD playback out of the box".

Finally: "Xbox Live gamers who can already talk to one another during game play will also be able to see their buddies and competitors in video-chat windows off to one side of the screen." It also says the camera will be sold separately.

Room for one more? Yossarian says: "Regarding the AA batteries, I believe that's an option, but the controller can also be recharged by docking it somehow. That's been suggested in numerous places for a while now." Numerous places that probably didn't post the Perfect Dark Zero shots.

70-odd minutes to the MTV show. Excited yet?

00:53 BST - AHA, A PROPER TRANSLATION - Our new favourite reader Shadar writes: "Correct translation ahoy! Since I am Norwegian, I get Danish." Works for us, chap. According to Shadar's translation, over 20 prototypes were presented and rejected, the E3 samples will be finished hardware with thematic front design options for games like Halo 3, Perfect Dark Zero and Project Gotham Racing 3, there are no screws visible anywhere on the unit, and the fans on the unit will switch themselves on and off allowing for a quieter unit whilst watching DVDs and such. The controller also feels the same, and takes two AA batteries.

00:52 BST - SONY'S WORRIED? - Not exactly X360-related, but perhaps X360-influenced. Various reports are springing up (thanks Jonathan Correa) that Sony CFO Takao Yuhara has indicated the company is considering a 2005 launch for the PlayStation 3 - or whatever the hell it's called - within the year. "For the year end sales season [so, Christmas], simultaneously building up both the PlayStation Portable system in America and Europe as well as the next generation PlayStation is one option that we have," Engadget quotes him as saying. Good plan. Hire more boats this time though.

00:38 BST - MORE CIRCLES - See what happens? We start quoting feedback form emails and suddenly everyone discovers sentence construction and punctuation. Thankfully. Good old "beemoh" writes: "Further credence could be given to the rumoured circle logo of the Xbox 360 as today's Metro - that free newspaper on [London] public transport - had an ad in for the show on MTV UK tomorrow which contained a similar arrangement of green circles." Perhaps they'll have the launch party on the Circle line.

23:58 BST - TUMBLEWEED - Two and a half hours to go by our watches and not much is happening. We're still here though. We're playing this (again) to amuse ourselves. Well, actually we're not - we're taking advantage of the lull to plug away at stuff that you won't see on the site for a few days yet - but you should play that anyway. Our top score is something like 3,200, which is, apparently, a bit rubbish once you get used to it.

23:21 BST - SNOW NOT FOR X360 AFTER ALL - It seems Cpt_Fluffy's barb about Marketwatch.com's "insight" might not be too wide of the mark. This press release says that Rockstar's Snow is "for the Xbox video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PC". It's a real-time strategy game due out in 2006 "based on the greed driven world of a ciminal empire" and Take-Two's Frog City studio is apparently doing it. Heck, it's not even Rockstar according to this. It's 2K Games. Someone was on drugs, then.

Larzen, meanwhile, has emailed links to bigger versions of the GameReactor scans. 1, 2, 3, 4.

23:09 BST - READER MAIL - It's all gone a bit quiet, so let's do some reader email stuff. Cpt_Fluffy points out: "That marketwatch.com video you posted calls GTA and True Crime first-person shooters... what insight they have." Good point. Next, from the comments, drks reminds us: "the thing on the bottom is for attaching to a USB lead for charging/connecting to PC". We have indeed seen that mentioned elsewhere. Finally, another reader called Brown Trousers, who rather worryingly seems to have one of our personal email addresses, asks: "Would you say that this update of yours is influenced by the Guardian's text commentary on football matches?" We would say that. In fact, we'd go as far as to say it's a complete rip-off.

22:41 BST - BLACK AND WHITE BUTTONS FOUND - According to comment-poster "jiveguy", "The black and white buttons are shoulder mounted... or so I read". "GunForHire" emailed at the same time and points out that Microsoft actually said this "a few months back".

22:33 BST - ROCKSTAR X360 GAME UNVEILED - Aha. This is more like it. This webcast thing with a ridiculous URL tells us that a new Rockstar game called "Snow", which is a "police action game based on the heroin trade" will be on the show floor at E3 and is for the Xbox 360. Another gritty drugsy game from Rockstar. Cracking.

22:19 BST - NO BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY? - Rob makes a good point via MSN Messenger. If this thing's backwards compatible with Xbox 1, what's happened to the black and white buttons? Because it's not as though you can plug in an old Xbox pad...

While we're on the subject of pads, the appropriately named "Tru7h Seeker" has pointed out via email that the thing about the Xbox 360 pad having a screen is bollocks. A mistranslation. And Lee Knight points out that we got the names muddled in the MSNBC item. Oh well. We did say it was all gossip and hearsay.

22:16 BST - MS E3 STAND MOCK-UP? - Once all this has died down and we actually get to E3, apparently we're going to be walking around "greenspace in an urban setting", which is the design brief that these chaps are saying Microsoft gave to New York design firm Purepartner for the actual Xbox 360 stand.

Apparently Purepartner used familiar civic landmarks as a basis and also drew inspiration from Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay "Circles" in which, we might as well quote, "the famed author cites the circle as a metaphor for rebirth, aspiration, inspiration, self-expression, community, communication, and competition". The alleged Xbox 360 logo, of course, features lots of circles. You can find what looks like a mock-up of the stand design here.

All seems a bit loopy to us.

22:04 BST - SCANS STILL UP - Those XboxFront guys come to the rescue. The GameReactor scans are still online here.

22:01 BST - MTV SPOT COST $500,000? - This Forbes piece quotes a "top New York media buyer" who reckons that the Xbox MTV special may have cost Microsoft half a million dollars to book. And that's before the cost of getting Elijah Wood, The Killers and, apparently, Snow Patrol involved. And how much more would it have cost to hire some beefy men to confiscate cameraphones, eh?

21:44 BST - SHOULD WE MAKE STUFF UP? NO - One of our developer friends asks: "If you're doing gossip, shouldn't you make some of it up?" Well no. We don't really want to mislead. "Like saying Mario is coming to Xbox 360 as part of the Rare deal, because MS don't feel like they've got value and Ninty don't want to piss them off." Come now.

21:35 BST - ANALYSTS UNCERTAIN, PAD HAS A SCREEN? - Things have quietened down a touch in the wake of the GameReactor scans, but there's still lots around to read if you're planning on staying with us until late. This item on MSNBC.com has some interesting quotes toward the end from analysts PJ McNealy and Michael Pachter.

McNealy reckons "This is more an Xbox 1.5 than an Xbox 2." So goodness knows what the next one will be called. "It's like an Xbox with a broadband cash register built in," he suggests. Pachter is also a bit wary. "I wonder if there's going to be enough time to get consumers really excited," he said to MSNBC.

Elsewhere, the scans from GameReactor have been yanked from the page we were linking, but we've dug up a few more translation snippets from the thread. Apparently "the round thingy" on the controller is actually a screen that tells you about Xbox Live updates and highlights the number of the wireless controller is in your hands. (Tru7h Seeker has since pointed out that this is a mistranslation.) There is also the suggestion that the hard disk is 20GB but can be upgraded.

21:22 BST - SQUARE ENIX NOT INTERESTED - More from the GameReactor breach (like that?): Apparently one of the quotes from Xbox vice president type person Peter Moore goes as follows. We've preserved the bad translation for you: "We have nothing new planned from Square Enix, and I don't think there will be anything revealed at E3. But it would surprise me if anyone avoid to develop games for Xbox 360 this generation."

Attempts to reach Square Enix's European representatives were unsuccessful, but it's an interesting point nonetheless. Not a cast-iron "never", but not exactly the most positive news in Microsoft's push to make the Xbox 360 a big thing in Japan. Mind you, they've still got Sakaguchi, Mizuguchi and Okamoto.

21:06 BST - GHOST RECON RECON - Those XboxFront guys (whoever they are) are really putting in some hours tonight. Their latest upload is blown up versions of the Ghost Recon 3 screenshots in the GameReactor scans. You can find them here. Looks nice! This one's definitely at E3, too.

20:52 BST - THE BIG RED BUS - Latest thought: Activision's American reps have refused to clarify which platforms the games on their E3 line-up relate to. This wouldn't be such an issue, but oddly there are two entries for Call of Duty 2, the second of which is subtitled "Big Red One". Apparently that was a term used to describe the American 1st Infantry Division during World War II, and the game is a squad-based affair focusing on them.

This ties in, as you may have realised by now, with the reference to Call of Duty 2 in the GameReactor scans linked earlier. Which we'll link again now. Call of Duty 2: Big Red One for Xbox 360? We put two and two together here first.

You can find the whole list of Activision E3 games here.

20:40 BST - NINJA GAIDEN BLACK - Deathgibbon (ello!) points out that there are screenshots of Ninja Gaiden Black on that website too. However, as we understand it, those are just the Ninja Gaiden Perfect Edition that Tecmo mentioned recently, which run on vanilla Xbox. False alarm!

Deathgibbon, since alerted to this, has apologised and said he saw Xbox 360 and Ninja Gaiden Black, put two and two together and made five. No worries mate - Microsoft put Xbox and 2 together and got 360.

20:26 BST - FOUND A VIDEO - Pizza order has been delayed as we've just discovered that a website called XboxFront.com has a little video snippet from the MTV special. Or at least it looks that way. It doesn't show any game footage obviously, but gives us a walk toward the actual hardware at the event. Head here to find it.

Right. Pizza for real this time. Where's the credit card gone?

20:13 BST - FIRST UPDATE - Obviously by now you'll have seen the Dead or Alive 4 shots (not much of a stylistic progression, by the looks of it, but certainly very pretty), and the Ninety-Nine Nights shot, but there's more to be coughed up out there if you give the web a tickle.

Like scans from Danish mag GameReactor, which, depending on where you read about it, tells us various things. They certainly confirm the photographs of the hardware you saw everywhere the other week.

They also claim that the following games have been confirmed: Perfect Dark Zero (Rare), Dimitri (that's the Peter Molyneux one), Gears of War (Epic Games), Project Gotham Racing 3 (Bizarre Creations), NBA2K6, Halo 3, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Bethesda Softworks), The Godfather (EA), The Darkness (Starbreeze), Call of Duty 2 (Infinity Ward?), RalliSport Challenge 3 (DICE) and Test Drive: Unlimited. The total is said to be 10-16 games for launch and 40 within six months.

Other details include the claim that the console will launch in America and Europe this year (presumably the November date accidentally touted by MTV) with a December launch in Japan. There's no talk of a price yet, but there's lots of talk of being number one (knew it).

The hardware will apparently stand up or lie down, but there's no PS2 stand. Interestingly, GameReactor also says it's about the same size as a PS2. The old one, that is; not the dinky slimline.

Xbox Live will be integrated, and all that stuff from the other day about silver and gold packages - and the relentless customisation - is apparently true.

Whether that means the specs as stated in the same item are true or not is harder to say, but then none of this is confirmed.

Claims about customisable fascias are apparently also true, if the GameReactor translations are to be believed, and game-related faceplates got games like Perfect Dark Zero and Halo 3 will be made available.

Finally, there's the news that the pad does rumble, despite being wireless.

Microsoft won't confirm any of this of course, and even we can't say for certain whether the translation is wholly accurate, but we thought you might want to know anyway. We'll bring you the confirmed details as soon as we have them.

Mmm, time for some pizza, methinks.

INTRODUCTION - Unsurprisingly, there's a lot of Xbox 360 gossip flying about this evening ahead of Microsoft's unveiling of the console on MTV.

Apparently most of the US websites have signed non-disclosure agreements that will see rainforests' worth of copy spring up the instant we pass the embargo time (or, er, a deserts' worth, maybe, since we're all on computers?).

We've signed no such agreement ourselves, so we'll just let you know what's going on as and when, and amuse ourselves in the meantime by tossing all sorts of links to scans and stuff at you. If you see anything interesting, be sure to let us know about it.

Yeah. We won't be linking THAT (as in, the inevitable leak of the entire programme about 5 seconds after it goes off-air), but anything else is game. Send in your tips! I'll name people. It'll be fun. Remember when you sat up all night waiting for the Quake shareware? It'll be like that.

Note: unless I fall asleep first.

Music. I'm just listening to the new Ben Folds on repeat over and over at the moment (and the Whatever And Ever Amen re-issue, which has some wonderful stuff on it). Any suggestions? What music would you have on to wait for Xbox 360?

A whole pizza to yourself? Well, you deserve it for bringing us the latest as it happens. The new DOA pics look lovely (the cloth and depth of field stuff especially)...can't wait for the footage tomorrow :)
  • Mugwum Verified Operations Director, Eurogamer Network #8 7 years ago

I dunno. I've kind of backed away from the pizza just now. We'll see how hungry I am at midnight. (There's always the kebab place over the road.)

Oh and I'm not drinking. Well, not much.
  • Nige #9 7 years ago

I used to love the all-nighters... the smell of ransid socks, the greasy pizza boxes, rummaging through everyone else's stuff, practicing handbrake turns in the carpark. Happy days.
  • Mugwum Verified Operations Director, Eurogamer Network #10 7 years ago

Yep. Mind you, it's one of the few next-gen games I've seen shown off so far which isn't basically just several hundred units on-screen at once with VERY SHINY ARMOUR. So it wins on that basis alone.
  • JDub #11 7 years ago

    Okay...

/rubs hands - gets ready for some action. Realises there's work in the morning....hmmm

    Nice DOA shots... :)

"Heh. I was posting on GameSpot about this, and one of the banned words is 'eurogamer'. Is this because of the medulla thing?"

Music eh? I'm listening to X Japan at the moment. I'm sure there's an ironic joke in there about it being an appropriate choice of soundtrack due to Xbox being rubbish in Japan, but er... I can't wrangle one out of it just now. Sorry.
  • Mugwum Verified Operations Director, Eurogamer Network #20 7 years ago

I'm going for music which has X in the title too. Currently: Beck - Sexx Laws.

I'd have thought the pad wireless channel selection would be automatic otherwise LAN gaming or otherwise with X360's near each other is going to be a problem. I heard that the button to the right of the memory ports was a wireless reset button of sorts.
  • Mugwum Verified Operations Director, Eurogamer Network #27 7 years ago

It should be noted, in addition to the two credits given in the 22:41 update, that Tru7h Seeker emailed just after I'd hit "Publish" with the same info and a link. I like that guy.

Its the first time in a long time that i feel real excitment for a new console release :)!
  • Khab #29 7 years ago

You guys are already forgetting stuff like that they've moved the black and white buttons, and it's not even 11pm yet! How this is EVER going to last another 6-10 hours I don't know. :)

    Nor do I...

If I can't contribute, can I make stuff up? I've a lovely rumour about the pad having a scratch-and-sniff pine scent...
  • Gl3n #32 7 years ago

Judging by the lack of a slot in the top of the controller, would it be safe to assume that the port at the bottom of the thing is for the headset? and would that in turn suggest that the 'magical mystery button' on the face of the controller is in fact for muting/volume (although surely it would make more sense for volume control to be on the actual headset)? Also, those numbers around it could probably just be for wireless channel switching (players 1-4). Cheers on the continual coverage EG!

maybe, but i thought that the headset was wireless, it would make sence. if your going to have a wirefree controller why on earth would you want a wire trailing from it to your head!.

maybe the port on the bottom of the pad is for recharging purposes :). i really hope im not going to have to stock up on the old AAA batteries.

Constantly charging controllers and headsets would get on my tits. Also, the port faces the gamer. The battery pack for the controller is obviously that giant slab on it's under belly. Wouldn't that charge frontways? That camera-phone shot doesn't reveal enough of the headset to really make it clear. Details details, i guess we'll know in a few hours :)

The main part of the face looks great but the prongs you hold being a continuation of the face looks a bit slablike to me. I don't like the way the top middle dips in giving the pad 'ears' either.

The prongs whilst chunkier looking seem to be thinner round the back, sortof half way between the controller-s and Dreamcast pad grip I suppose.
  • terminalterror #51 7 years ago

You see the slot on the right hand side (or bottom) of the console that is widely believed to be for the hard drive? Observe that it has two raised nipple thingies above it when placed upright. These are in fact eyes. The slot is the mouth of the console (the eyes are for cosmetic effect to emphasise the mouth) and when a gold player defeats a silver player, they have the option of speaking through the 'mouth' instead of the headset, so whatever they say into their microphone comes out of the losing silver player's console, and moves in sync with the sound. This is limited to 5 seconds so you can yell 'OWNED!!!' or 'YOU SUCK!!!111!!!' at significant volume. This is to encourage uptake of Gold Live subscriptions.

Back onto the controller thing: According to a news bit on the teamxbox.com frontpage it says that at E3 MS are going to unveil a prototype Xbox360/Windows universal controller. How is that going to work with the 360 being wireless? Having cables hanging off the controller that you don't need is going to be a pain in the arse.
  • renzo #75 7 years ago

Why wouldn't it be wireless? You'd just need a receiver for the PC like you get for optical mice, as the Xbox probably already has the receiver built into the console.
  • Artemus #76 7 years ago

"Yeah, normally a few blurry screenshots impress me so much I rush out and buy that console."

Heh, real funny. I was talking about the DoA4 ones and NG. The ones that look like they're meant to be showcasing next gen graphics.
  • Derblington #77 7 years ago

"maybe the port on the bottom of the pad is for recharging purposes :). i really hope im not going to have to stock up on the old AAA batteries."

there was something posted in the forum about th econtroller being charged via USB and the 360 console, and it'll take regular batteries too.

Ooh, and if it has a USB port on it it could explain my last question about the universal controller!

Correct translation ahoy! Since I am Norwegian, I get Danish.

    [PAGE 1]

20GB Hard Drive and a pretty, white controller
All about the design of the Xbox 360

One of the major problems [at the time of release] of the original Xbox, was its size. This is, thankfully, not a problem with this new console, which is no bigger than the original, black PlayStation 2. The design is a result of collaboration between sculptor [industrial designer?] Jonathan Haydes, an employee of Microsoft, and one American and one Japanese design studio. Over 20 different prototypes were presented and rejected [before this final design was accepted].

Everything from a toaster-like device to what J. Allard described as a "Fisher Price Nuclear Plant" has been considered. Finally, the current, timeless, concave chrome design was accepted, and [subsequently] leaked onto the internet. It's interesting to note that there are no visible screws or bolts in the casing, and that the front design can be changed in accordance to your own mood. The new Xbox 360 can be given a quite personal flavour. Microsoft promises that this year's E3 will feature finished hardware with samples of the front designs [they plan to make available]. The company has mentioned thematic front designs inspired by successes such as Halo [3], Perfect Dark [Zero] and Project Gotham Racing [3]. The Xbox 360 can stand on end as well as assuming the traditional horizontal position, without any peripherals necessary for either mode, and [however it is positioned], the fans on the unit will switch themselves on and off [according to demand]. For instance, you'll be able to watch a DVD on a far more silent piece of hardware.

It's also worth noting that Microsoft is quite pleased with their current controller design (the Controller S), since the new, white controller is pretty much the same. Since there are no longer memory card slots [in the controller], it is slimmer, but the shape, the feel and the finish are all the same, down to the analogue sticks. The black and white buttons now act as secondary triggers, which is a far more ideal solution. The big button in the middle of the controller is the [eagerly?] anticipated "Ring of Light". It indicates which controller [out of a set of four] you hold, whether you have any new messages on Live or generally any other online event. You can also change between your current game and Live mode at any time, with no lag.

    [MIDDLE CAPTION BOX]

    XBox 360 >> The Joypad
Finally wireless - The Xbox 360 sets a new standard

There have been wireless joypads available for over ten years, produced by among others Joytech, Madcatz and Logitech. They've actually been on the market since the 16-bit era [correction: they've been available for an even longer time. I had infrared controllers for my NES]. But this is the first time a console manufacturer decides to provide wireless pads as a standard. The joypad has the requisite rumble functions, the power of which is adjustable to preserve battery. The two rechargable AA-batteries will be capable of handling extended playing sessions and will be charged via the USB ports of the console. The future is truly wireless.

    [CAPTION ABOVE XBOX 360 HARDWARE]

The logo that has swept across the internet over the last few months appear to be fake. The above is the proper Microsoft logo. It looks familiar, but still conveys a fresh and different style.

    [PAGE 2]

    The Future is Online
The new Xbox 360 features integrated Xbox Live

Microsoft is actually a shareware company. "It's in our nature," says Robbie Bach, when interviewed about the Xbox 360 by GameReactor. This is obvious throughout the entire concept of the new Xbox 360, with PlayStation 3 providing the raw muscle, and Revolution aiming for innovation. Usually, the processing power is the hot topic upon release of new hardware, but Microsoft would rather focus on Xbox Live, which will be expanded greatly by the time Xbox 360 enters the stage. The first, and most obvious change, is that Xbox Liveis now fully integrated into the hardware. Whether you choose to go online or stay offline, a Gamer Card keeps track of yuor personal preferences. Xbox Live will also be available in two flavours. One is the free version, dubbed Xbox Live Silver. Here, you can download additional content to your games, download demos of upcoming titles and engage in live-video conversations online free of charge. Xbox Live Gold, however, will be required to actually play games online. There will naturally be exceptions, such as Massively Multiplayer Online Games, where the service is paid directly to the developer, and exceptions will be made in special free weekends, where all content will be available to all users free of charge.

Further, you have the opportunity to engage in live video conversations via Xbox 360 using its camera peripheral. You can also stream photos to the hard drive, and your favourite tracks from your iPod. Microsoft's vision for the Xbox 360 is that of an ultimate convergence console: you'll be able to watch television, watch movies and at the same time be online to accept invitations from fellow gamers or check your Live mail. Microsoft assumes that around 50% of all Xbox 360 customers will use [the console's] Xbox Live online features, in stark contrast to the current 8% who uses the Xbox Live service. Big numbers. But are they realistic?

    [CAPTION ABOVE CONTROLLER]
The controllers are slightly smaller than their predecessors. They are also equipped with an all-new button that brings you straight to the Xbox dashboard.

    [PAGE 3]

    This is the Xbox 360!
We've tested the new Microsoft console

It is unleashed in less than six months. The next generation will start with the release of the Xbox 360 in the US, followed by a European release 7-10 days later, while being finally released in Japan in December. This is the tightest release window ever for the release of a console. Microsoft has worked hard to keep the Xbox 360 a secret, and they've at least partially succeeded, even if the new console is released a surprisingly short while after the original. We still don't know what price the hardware will retail at, and no price will be available until October or November, so one of the most important aspects of the launch is still unknown.

"But we know what price range it will need to be within to actually sell," says Robbie Back, Senior Vice President of Home & Entertainment. "We will not make a mistake again like we did with the European retail price." Microsoft claims that they've learnt several valuable lessons with regards to the launch of the original Xbox. Above all, the company wants to make the Xbox 360 a well-rounded piece of consumer electronics. J. Allard claims the original Xbox was designed like a painting, where layers upon layers was added to the design, whereas the Xbox 360 is a sculpted whole, where both the form and the content was predetermined, and the design made to suit these, and nothing else. He further explains that they were leading the way with the original Xbox, with regards to online implementation and the hard drive, and that these features will mean further market penetration with this new generation of the Xbox hardware.

"There's no reason to be humble about it. We mean to be the market leader this time around," according to Robbie Bach. "I think we'll be seeing a [market] situation where Microsoft and Sony will stand as equals. The Xbox 360 is a powerful piece of hardware, so powerful that it will take developers several years to fully utilize its capabilites. Of course, this means that there will be an initial shortage of launch titles." Microsoft assumes that they will be able to present 10-16 titles for launch, with the number slated to reach 40 by the first six months of the console's lifespan. Microsoft themselves will present Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo: Elements of Power and Bizarre Creations' Project Gotham Racing 3 for launch.

Oh and you might want to take a look here:

(solution site for OurColony, which finishes in 10mins)

OurColony finishes an hour ahead of the broadcast with a special "you'll be first" message.. so we may get some nice stuff in a sec, pics or the like - head to: www.ourcolony.net :)

"Xbox Live gamers who can already talk to one another during game play will also be able to see their buddies and competitors in video-chat windows off to one side of the screen." If this is true. I worry for my internets. MSN webcam shenanigans cane my bandwidth as it is, and i'm on 2mbit.

Edit* A single msn webcam broadcast on my PC makes Halo 2 unplayable.

EXCITED?!? I'm 32, and I'm staying up all night to get a text-based account of the contents of a half-hour show being aired on MTV in the US... To say that that's a first wouldn't exactly be overstating it.
  • Yossarian #152 7 years ago

Oh, while we're quoting me on things I picked up from message boards and badly-translated Danish magazine articles, Dimitri - Lionhead's next epic endeavour in the field of hyperbole - is supposedly coming to the 360, BioWare's unnanounced project following Dragon Age is a 360 title using the Unreal 3 engine, and Peter Moore is talking up some form of Halo before the year's end (although surely if true this would have to mean they were working on the next iteration simultaneously with Halo 2).

Probably telling you things you all already know.

Also, regarding Glen's point about connections, I think Microsoft are being a bit presumptuous about the standards available in Europe. After all, touting this as the 'HD Era' means little to us when HDTVs aren't widely available over here, and bigging up Live features is worrisome when our connections still don't match the average US player's, especially considering the Live servers favour them anyway (cf. aforementioned shotgun lag in Halo 2).

Personally I have 512, and pretty shaky 512 at that. I don't fancy live video chat over 32 player games of Halo 3 without a hefty upgrade.

Going on the other leakages about Kameo being a launch-game, i'd say that was what the shot contains. Especially seeing as another OC shot swoons off a racing game (PGR3 anyone?) • Shadar #187 7 years ago

Ah ... time for more translation ... This time, the caption on the left side of the "This is the Xbox 360!" page.

    J. Allard Says
    (Microsoft Corporate VP)
    - The Xbox 360 kickstarts the next generation, or era, if you please. That's why we wouldn't name it the Xbox 2, since that era is long past us. This time, there's something new, where the player, rather than the software, dictates the gaming experience!

    - There are some enchanting products out there, such as the iPod, which feels like it [the entire line] has been designed by one single person. And even though we know Steve Jobs didn't make the hardware himself, it felt that way. We've been aiming for the same goal with the Xbox 360.

    - There will be a variety of face plates available to adorn your console. There will, amongst many others, be a front in coal glass fiber (?), which is the one I want to be using.

    - Piracy hurts everyone. The solution, I think, will be to put more emphasis on Xbox Live, a service we make far more use of in the Xbox 360. There are, for instance, no-one out there who [can't] play Halo 2 online. (Translator's note: I guess the good Allard was misquoted, because according to the article, he claims no-one can play Halo 2 online ...)

    Peter Moore says
    (VP Xbox Game Studios)

    - Xbox Live will have over two million subscribers this time. At the very least.

    - We will have games on this console that even the Japanese will want to play, and as such the console will see an Asian release in December. An example [of titles appealing to the Asian market] is Mistwalker's upcoming RPG.

    - We have nothing new to say about Square-Enix and I don't expect anything to be unveiled at E3. But it would surprise me greatly if there is a single developer who will not find the Xbox an interesting console in this [next] generation.

    - We've needed a wider product catalogue for a long time now. Master Chief and Fable have kept the Xbox running all by themselves for quite some time now. We need 4 or 5 more strong titles and characters, and so Joanna Dark sneaks into the heat of battle.

    ------------
Do you need Ghost Recon translations as well? I'll be getting on with it ...
  • Artemus #188 7 years ago

Same here. My 512 connection can't handle it!
  • Dazrimm #189 7 years ago

    Did he say water cooled?

  • Gl3n #190 7 years ago

Yoss, find a download manager (download accelerator would probably do) and enter the url as a save location. Nice touch on those credits, my colony was listed :) 'lionhead'
  • redzero #191 7 years ago

No-one posting in these 5mins? hehe wonder why :o)

No new footage though, just confirms I really like where this is going. Except the "every game will be on Live out the box", that can go to hell. I still think the PD0 thing is more exciting - http://www. ourcolony.net/historypage.html and its the bottom one - yeah, bring on the games
  • smirny #192 7 years ago

that video excites me more than i dare admit...

    *drools*
  • Markusdragon #193 7 years ago

it's not a 'save as' job. The 'wmv' is only a playlist, and a seemingly self-referencing one at that.
  • Cbrotherson #194 7 years ago

    Jesus.
Love it or hate it, but Microsoft knows how to take advantage of being a Western console creator. I've never, EVER remembered this kind of slow build up excitement for a console this side of the pond, because for once it's something outside of Japan getting first dibs. Even then, compare this build up to what was seen for the first Xbox.
The timing, the virals, the 'leaks', the buzz... it's freaking great. Especially given that a lot of gamers would barely give MS the time of day only 4-5 years ago. It's pretty masterful to watch even if the console unveiling ends up being disappointing.

Not long to find out now...
  • redzero #195 7 years ago

  • Shadar #197 7 years ago

Further translation ... Halo 3 stuff, all that jazz.

Halo 3 on the Xbox 360
It might not come as a huge surprise that Master Chief is sent on another tour of duty on the upcoming Microsoft console, but what may actually come as news is that Bungie worked on Halo 3 while finalizing Halo 2. The third game will undoubtedly provide a continuation of the saga of Master Chief, as well as an all-new Xbox Live mode with plenty of surprises thrown into the mix. We, at least, can't wait!
  • ElephantMonkey #198 7 years ago

Lets hope it doesn't get too noisey with those 2 huge fans.
  • Zero Beat #199 7 years ago

Something tells me they'll be saving Perfect Dark Zero for E3 rather than MTV.. in TEN MINUTES!
  • ses #200 7 years ago

Maybe it's just me, but that video seems incredibly lame. Allard is trying way too hard to be hip and the design is still uninspired. On the positive side, it's smaller than I thought and the specs are as expected. Might be noisy, though.
  • Yossarian #201 7 years ago

Microsoft have masterminded an incredible operation here, in every sense. If their actual concrete plans for the Xbox 360 are even half as organised, we're in for one hell of a console war next - no, this - generation.
  • Cbrotherson #202 7 years ago

I reckon we'll get a flash of PD Zero, rather than anything prolonged. Something that will make us go "oh shit, was that...?" and then a cut away from some people playing it, followed by snippets of 'celebs' saying how great the "grafix" are ;)

And that will be that till E3. But do take in mind there's other exposes on PD Zero this week in a few places, so in about... *looks at watch* less than ten mins there will be links and pics flying all over the place...
  • redzero #203 7 years ago

Allard was just into it, he pulled it off well and didnt seem stretched, the only "lame" bits as far as Im concerned were the whole gamertag bit (give me some gameplay footage instead any day)
  • Markusdragon #204 7 years ago

Wish WMP would let me buffer more than 60 seconds of video. 5 minutes would be nice...
  • redzero #205 7 years ago

    Redzero: your time has come.

By the way, I really must apologise again for getting things wrong and getting waaaay too excited in places. But having decided to do this in spite of a lack of sleep over the past few weeks and in the face of Microsoft seemingly giving everything they possibly could to our competition, I feel like it's paid off. And I'm a very happy gamer. The debates surrounding the various things Microsoft is doing will doubtless start to spring up shortly, and I'd imagine the comments about what a prat I look will as well, but there we go! This is pure, unbridled enthusiasm. I hope you're all enjoying it :-)
  • Shadar #215 7 years ago

    But wait! There's more!

    Dimitri
For more than five years, Peter Molyneux has kept rambling about his dream project, Dimitri, without ever giving us even the tiniest sliver of information about the project. Rumour has it that the game is now really in production, and that it is headed for the Xbox 360.

    Gears of War
Peter Moore did not show us anything much from Epic's upcoming title, but from what we were shown on our trip to the US, this is shaping impressively. This is undoubtedly the most beautiful of all the Xbox 360 games we've been shown so far!

    Project Gotham Racing 3
Bizarre Creations are currently hard at work on the next installment in the Project Gotham Racing series. It is among Microsoft's launch line-up for the Xbox 360. Expect more accurately modelled cities, more cars and even more impressive graphics.

    NBA 2k6
This game was part of the demonstration we were shown, and alongside Gears of War, it was the most graphically impressive game we saw. The way Lebron James' shirt realistically moved after a shot and the way his muscles seemed to ripple under his skin betrayed extreme realism ...

    Halo 3
Peter Moore would not say anything about the Halo series, nor about Bungie when we met him. He was, however, glad to confirm that another Halo game is in the works. He even said it was no longer a secret ... expect Halo 3 sometime this year.

    Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Bethesda is currently hard at work with the fourth game in the series, and from what we've seen so far, it is shaping up to be at least as good as the previous games. It will hit the streets sometime during 2005.

    The Godfather
The Godfather is also on his way to the Xbox 360, and will allegedly be finished sometime early next year. We really look forward to this!

    The Darkness
Swedish developer Starbreeze, who brought us the glorious Chronicles of Riddick, is currently hard at work on a project involving Image Comics' well-known anti-hero The Darkness. It'll probably be great.

    Call of Duty 2
Infinity Ward's eagerly anticipated sequel is on its way to the Xbox 360. We expect to see more of it at this year's E3.

    Rallisport Challenge 3
According to rumour, Swedish developer Digital Illusions is already hard at work on a third game in the rally series.

    Test Drive Unlimited
Atari is now working on yet another instalment to the Test Drive-series, expected to be released early next year.

    ----
Fingers ... ache ... have written ... too much ... I'll see if there's anything more.
  • redzero #216 7 years ago

  • Markusdragon #218 7 years ago

    Yo! Fellow 512ers

Sorry, the put-on hip-ness of the video has made me talk like this. Anyways. Lower your connection speed in the 'performance' options to the 300-and-something, and make sure your buffering is at the full minute. That should give you about 2 minutes pure uninterrupted watching between buffers.
  • Cbrotherson #219 7 years ago

    Hoo boy...

There's going to be a little disappointment -- just seen the PD Zero screens, the quality isnt great... eeek.
  • skalmanxl #220 7 years ago

Rallisport Challenge 3 According to rumour, Swedish developer Digital Illusions is already hard at work on a third game in the rally series.

I'm sceptical, about a year ago DICE claimed that it wouldn't be working on any external IP's, specifically meaning the RS-games. But who knows...
  • ses #221 7 years ago

Video looked pretty. Water cooling? I would expect them to be using water pipes, or heat pipes, actually. That's heat sinks with coolant contained inside ... I've got a water cooling system on my computer, and it added a good 15lbs to it. The console would NOT be as elegant as that with a proper water cooling rig.

I want a rip of that video. Anyone got it? If they do, I've got server space.

  • Gl3n #248 7 years ago

i can't keep up with the tidal wave of information just released.. hah, and 30 minutes ago i was considering bed.
  • Artemus #249 7 years ago

PD0 would look bad even if it was an Xbox1 game!

Huh? I'll agree that it's impressive that their server somehow manages to stay up despite the fact that most likely half the internet is accessing it at the moment. :)

It's a slick looking machine, but for now I agree with the "Gut reactions" section at Gamespot - I'm going to have to see a whole lot of the games before I start thinking about getting one on release...
  • ejstyles #251 7 years ago

Tiny bits of Ghost Recon footage in that new Gamespot video. It looks pretty awesome with the picture-in-picture comms stuff. The subtle effects like the camera zoom/blur and the animation looks like the games are gonna go for that hyper-realism evolutionary step rather than a generational leap.

It's an extraordinary volume of information.
  • skalmanxl #253 7 years ago

To be honest I've known pretty much all of this as fact for about a month, but this is the first time I'm getting to see some screens, it's a mixed bag to be honest. But I'm holding out for Gears of War, THAT'S what I want to see. For real this time. From what I've heard, it's amazing...
  • Khab #254 7 years ago

Dunno if these are new or the ones you tried to find earlier today. Either way they look more like a next-gen game than PD0. :D
  • Kiigan #255 7 years ago

Just look at all the nerds in that video. Look at them!

What I really like about Xbox 360 the most, is how there's this one awesome button that is like... a whole new world of opportunity that's never been there before. That's what I like about it. It's like the Start button in Windows, only more awesome and extreme. With a gamer score - aww yeah!

//Sees a few "High Fives" going on down at MS headquarters this night/Day ;)

Anyone going to throw me a bone with my Backwards Compatibility Question yet please.?

//needs help to stay with it all now :)
  • skalmanxl #257 7 years ago

Dunno if these are new or the ones you tried to find earlier today. Either way they look more like a next-gen game than PD0. :D

That's the stuff. Although that is media from the 2004 GDC where Epic showed of UE3.0 for the first time. At that time, it was said to run on the next-gen devkit.
  • Mugwum Verified Operations Director, Eurogamer Network #258 7 years ago

Yeah. What's going on with backwards compatibility? And what the HELL is happening on MTV!?
  • drks #259 7 years ago

wow, that gamespot video is funny

    "next generation COOOOOONSOLES!"

and stuff from allard about 'the human experience is the reactor!"

    jeez
  • ElephantMonkey #260 7 years ago

did the MTV video finish yet or what?
  • Khab #261 7 years ago

I was just telling myself that I can somehow not shake the feeling that Sony won't let MS have this free a reign. Maybe they've underestimated the opposition, but somehow I doubt it. :/ When analysts say stuff like:

Boris Markovich: We believe that being first to market is a significant advantage for Microsoft, just as it was in the last generation for Sony.

I wonder how old this guy is - doesn't he remember that Sega was in fact first to the market last time, and was predicted to benefit from that. Instead, the Sony hype machine stopped the DreamCast dead in its tracks. MicroSoft obviously both have more moolah and are more aware of this danger than Sega ever was, but I still wouldn't be surprised if we get a "this is shite, the PS3 will make this look like a NES"-news either now or right before the Xbox360 launch. Dunno how the hell they're gonna back that up, but OTOH, did the "Emotion Engine"-hype need backing up?

    /ponders
  • Kiigan #262 7 years ago

Guys, there's no backwards compatibility. Just let it go alright :)
  • ElephantMonkey #263 7 years ago

The official site is up if anyone is interested

  • #264 7 years ago

Yeah, wtf.. PD0 .. ugly piece of crap. Hooo-boy. This one's going to get quite the backlash.
  • Cbrotherson #265 7 years ago

    It's done and dusted.

General consensus is a mixture of disappointment and promise. Bottom line, MS has one hell of a job to do at E3 to make up for the large dollop of mixed feeling currently going around.
  • Khab #266 7 years ago

So I'm the "cynical contingent" now, eh? :)

Back in the days you didn't even play consoles...
  • ElephantMonkey #268 7 years ago

so did they show games in MTV?
  • Khab #269 7 years ago

Yeah, wtf.. PD0 .. ugly piece of crap. Hooo-boy. This one's going to get quite the backlash.

Heh. And how we whined and complained about how Nintendo could be so stupid as to let Rare go.

So, er, two releases on Xbox, one of which sold nothing at all, and the other one will be released just in time for the launch of the NEXT console. o_O

I bet Iwata laughed all the way to the bank... come to think of it, he's probably STILL laughing.

    htt p://xbox360.ign.com/articles/611/611184p1.html

"Eight games were shown -- seven viewable, one playable. Perfect Dark Zero was the only playable title, and it was underwhelming, looking early, dark, and chugging at under 20 FPS."

I'm going to bed now chaps. There doesn't seem much more to add. Go ahead and continue to paste links and I'll check them out later.

I've posted a final update to the main page. Hopefully that'll be that. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, and particularly to those of you who fed me links and tips, translations and kept me smiling. If there's another excuse to do this some day, I fully intend to exploit it :-)

Well........We Goosed it,We Tweaked it,and we spun it. etc.. :)

    Class..
then the water cooling totally not known about or expected by me.. :-)
  • Feanor #273 7 years ago

Great coverage, Tom. Eurogamer was the first website I went to after the MTv special was over.

Apart from a rather annoying pro-gamer with glasses, the MTV special was pretty good. They showed more game footage than I expected, and I thought PGR 3 and Ghost Recon 3 looked great. Perfect Dark Zero looked a bit average tbh, but it won't be out for 6 months and look how much Forza improved in the last 6 months of its development. So I won't write it off just yet.
  • Khab #274 7 years ago

Hooo boy. That article there doesn't make me think this'll be as much of a success as MS wants it to be. If Sony answer with two or three playable, smooth and fresh-looking games for the PS3 at E3, the Xbox360 will suddenly be facing an uphill struggle...

Edit: That is, of course, assuming that Nintendo doesn't blow everyone else out of the water with something completely unexpected and eminently lovable. :)

I've been chatting with my American friend. He's been giving me a running commentary of the whole MTV show as it happened, and he's even stuck up some videos of PD0 for me. It looks alright in motion, you get to see a quick split-screen bit with people flying about, and a full-screen bit with a guy shooting a machine gun at another person. Not too much to get excited about.

2 sec clips were shown of several games including PGR3, Madden and NFSU.

All in all he says there was nothing in the MTV show that we didn't already know and the only worthwhile thing was the underwhelming Perfect Dark, although they did mention it allows over 50 players at once.
  • donwilson #277 7 years ago

Looks like it's going to be another universal video/audio output. This means: HDMI, DVI, etc etc.
  • redzero #278 7 years ago

I just watched the MTV special on my tivo and was pretty disappointed. As a previous post says there are a few 2-4 second clips of the games.
  • dk_rare #281 7 years ago

post 300 :D Just thought I should say that is has been confirmed for worldwide release this year

"However, Bach did make one thing abundantly clear--the Xbox 360 will arrive by Christmas 2005 in all territories. "The last thing I'll say is just to confirm we will be launching the next generation in North America and Europe and Japan this holiday season," he said."

    give it a chance.
  • space_ace #288 7 years ago

    hello sony? mushi mushi..?
  • Whizzo #289 7 years ago

Of course give Rare more time to improve PD0, it's not like they've been making it for long.

    Oh.

How Ubisoft can make GR3 look like it does while a part of MS makes PD0 look like an original Xbox game is rather intriguing...

Damn. I just love the way Microsoft decides to piss all over the new EU countries. The language selection on the official site does not include Hungary, Poland, Czechia nor any from the new (a year ago, ffs!) additions. It's not like they have lots of text to translate.

    Fucking way to go, wankers.

    (sorry, had to vent it)
  • Lukree #295 7 years ago

Is there any modchips available yet? ;)
  • zErOb_cOOl #296 7 years ago

The spec of the hardware sounds massive (3 x 3.2GHz processor!) I'm not really up to date with the latest PC specs, but I'm sure that spec is huge compared. And consoles usually have less power than the top (or even average) spec PC of the time of release (as they only play games.)

Of course, the 360 is destined to do a whole load of other things too, so maybe thats where a lot of the processing power is going (and might not all be available for games.)

I don't know much about games development, but could someone explain to me how the other games can be that far into development, but PD0 is still lacking?
  • Syrette #300 7 years ago

the Perfect Dark Zero in-game footage looks fine, if not as amazing as it could be. i don't see why you people are complaining so much.

See the comments about PD0/Kameo/PGR3 for a new PDZ video that dispels doubts about the shitty screenshots.

His the evil version (remember the days of double dragon and your evil shadow counterselves?). He uses the diahbilo(sp?) and is apparently the HARDEST boss in the game (killing most of the game developers within seconds).
  • igol #304 7 years ago

My mate taped me MTV launch and we watched it on sunday. Did MTV europe cut it or somethng? It was just half an hour of music, a glimpse of the console on a podium and a quick shot of some celebs playing a FSP. Was that it?
  • Gareth.de #305 7 years ago

Looks like Xbox 360 *WILL* be backwards compatible - on the video when they're showing the dashboard, check out the Fable icon with the text "Xbox 1 Zone" beside it.

    You heard it here first.
