PS3 tops UK poll as most anticipated next-gen console

That actually mean anything?

With just weeks to go until the Xbox 360 hits European shelves, a survey has revealed that UK gamers are most looking forward to the arrival of the PlayStation 3.

The survey, which was conducted by research firm XTN Data in September, found that of the 1000 respondents questioned, 32 per cent were planning to buy a PS3, while 27 per cent said they would purchase an Xbox 360. The survey did not ask respondents for their opinion on Nintendo's Revolution console.

"This comes despite huge efforts by Microsoft to launch in time for the vital Christmas period and before Sony's 2006 launch," said XTN Data founder Greig Harper. The Xbox 360 is due to launch in Europe on December 2.

The survey also found that 11 per cent of those questioned use filesharing software to download games illegally. The most downloaded titles are Rome: Total War and The Sims 2, with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas topping the bill - it's downloaded an average of 75 times per hour.

How come this has only just been published BTW? How long could it take them to count 1000 votes?

    1,000 people? Pretty much pointless.

As for the inevitable X360 fanboy invasion, I can't wait. :)

Does this mean that Sonys lead will be cut to less than 5%?
  • superdelphinus #7 6 years ago

Completely irrelevent i know, but what happened to those guys who did the flight simulators - EF2000 etc - i think it was DID? THey were main those games.
  • crashVoodoo #8 6 years ago

    i'm x360 myself.

it just does things i like .. live, networking etc. nothing against the ps3 and i'm sure it'll be a shit hot console and sell by the truckload, i just like the xbox package so to speak..
  • Zomoniac #9 6 years ago

Sims 2 downloaded a lot? Doesn't surprise me given that if you actually bought the game it refused to work if you were running Nero as it assumed you were a pirate. The only way round it was to actually get a pirate version. Go EA!

No idea. It was DID. Last I saw of them was the brilliant follow-up to SEF2000, F22: Air Dominance Fighter.

See it's the Dreamcast all over. PS3 like the PS2 before it has absolutely no solid info, but its name carries so much weight that people are oblivious to all the things the 360 does right. Good stuff does not prevail in this industry, swaying the stupid casual population does, and there's really no sure fire way of doing so.

So fucking depressing.. so obvious that I'm an old, outdated fart.
  • superdelphinus #13 6 years ago

Yeah those games were the dogs arse (or bollocks, depending on your viewpoint). Its a shame they didnt do any others.

Why dont we all stop hating the players (xbox 360/ ps3/ revolution) and hate the game (unoriginal, uninspiring, linear pointless crap games, games industry in general) before it ends up like the music industry and we have bloody 'doom idol' or something

    Id say Dominic Diamond :)

    Not sure who else....
  • alimokrane #17 6 years ago

Lets face it 32% against 27% is not a big victory for sony !!
  • superdelphinus #18 6 years ago

probably dominic diamond, patrick moore, and that nob off the sky games programme. Violet berlin would take over the presenting role. Can you imagine that? Thats why we must all love all hardware, unless it is designed by phillips
  • mustardkid #19 6 years ago

GTA downloaded 75 times an hour?? there must be some pretty fat pipes about
  • skillian #20 6 years ago

I think the headline here is that anticipation for the two is so close. I would have expected PS3 to be higher than that.
  • superdelphinus #21 6 years ago

Although they appear to be close you could read it as a dissmissive of the 360. Basically people seemed to have voted for an unquantifyabley powerful, largely unknown console, over one of which plenty is known. Obviously, as with most statistics, anything can be drawn though
  • BartonFink #22 6 years ago

Only 5% Sony should be quaking in their boots
  • Markusdragon #23 6 years ago

5% is pretty low for an MS vs. Sony poll. Wonder if there's something they're not telling us...
  • Kami #24 6 years ago

"The survey did not ask respondents for their opinion on Nintendo's Revolution console." and "The survey also found that 11 per cent of those questioned use filesharing software to download games illegally."

... may I ask exactly WHAT kind of survey this was? First of all, asking about next-gen consoles and leaving one out either hints bias or stupidity (more likely the latter), discrediting it immediately... besides, 32% + 27% does not equal 100%... there's missing information there.

And I point out the 11% downloading games illegally because... well. I'd have expected that figure to be MUCH higher actually. One fault about surveys is that people also tend to lie...

Sorry, I can't help but get the faint whiff of L'eau de Bullshit. Despite it being a "survey", doesn't sound either professional or very well conducted on the surface...
  • JonFE #25 6 years ago

I wonder what the results would be if the poll was conducted in late October-early November instead...
  • Daryoon #26 6 years ago

    Was it for Family Fortunes?
  • phAge #27 6 years ago

Anyone who knows fuck-all about statistics will know that in order to get anything even resembling a reliable result, at least 1500 respondents are needed. Also, I'd say that a 5% difference is pretty well done by MS, considering the difference this gen. But mainly, I think those XTN Data people ought to STFU.
  • vane101 #28 6 years ago

    Whoooaaa - Xbox fanboy!!!

All those people thinking about getting the PS3 are thinking about next gen GTA, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid - the big multi-million PS exclusive or 'on PS first' AAA super brands.

Tbe Xbox has only got one exclusive super brand - Halo.

Polls are fucking stupid. Face it PS2 sold 100Mill. and the Xbox sold 20mill ( dont know just a geuss) most gamers who did buy the ps2 will buy the ps3 and its all because Sony has good line up of exclusive games like Final Fantasy, GT and so on and Micrsoft dosent. Killzone 2 was the most talked about game at E3 and MGS4 on the TGS and guess what thats marketing.

@vane101 - err who it the fanboi here?

No guarantee that the next GTA will be a temporary (as it is at the moment) PS3 exclusive, MGS either. FFX will be on 360. Gran Turismo errr there will be better on 360 there already is on Xbox.

I thought there was a rumour going around that MS were trying to secure the rights to a temporary exclusive on GTA. Might make sense considering we won't probably see a PS3 on these shores until this time next year.

    I dub thee fanboi!!
  • Captain-nippon #35 6 years ago

PS 3 rules, just like it did in the last 2 GEn. . x360 is going nowhere, in the UK, Japan, Korea, Canada or the US of A.

MS has just become the laughting stock of the console history....Failure after failure..sad but it's true. ...

    "Failure after failure..sad but it's true. ..."

  • admir #37 6 years ago

    so what is your point
  • caligari #38 6 years ago

Admit it fan-boys...there IS no loyalty.

I stood by my Sinclair and threw pebbles at the C64 owners (because I couldn't afford both).

I stood by my Megadrive and threw bigger pebbles (I guess these could qualify as 'stones') at the SNES owners (because I couldn't afford both).

Big (and heavy) rocks were etc etc Dreamcast Vs PS2 etc etc.

    You get the point.

It just comes down to simple 'green-eyed monsterism' when you don't have enough money to buy both (or in some cases 'all') the systems.

And for some reason I'm posting on a forum at 1:42 in the morning because my game crashed after a long period of no saves...

  • admir #39 6 years ago

next gen consoles better have sleep mode like the DS or PSP.

  • Gouki #40 6 years ago

Despite all my rantings in the past. My 1st choice will always be PC!!!
Pointing out Not a fanboy of PS, MS or ninty.

THIS REALLY DOES SEEM LIKE A MADE UP POLL!!!!

This close to a launch a said poll just crops up. Hmmmm surprise.

Its not just gamers who are feeding this now (well always dull) console war the press are fueling it great guns. We all know Sony and Microsfot want to win in terms of sales but whichever comes out on top in not neccesserily a better machine, its just simply sold more.

Constant X vs Y is so annoying.

If your gonna buy an Xbox 360 Good fo you.
If your buying a PS3 great

    but lets get on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can i just make one last point which made me scream in gamestation.

A couple kids of an age greater than 7 (although you wouldnt think so!!!!!) were all stood round the Xbox 360 boxes. "Orrrhhh man the PS3 so owns the 360"

Neither consles out!!! True you can get a feel from comming to sites like this along with many others but until people have had a chance to see both running in the flesh and possibly played them its mad just make a rash statement like that.

The problem lies in the chav culture!!

"Me, mates say he's played on the PS3, he says its banging" (a term i gather means good).

This kind of reputation for a console has gone on hard work beforehand like the PS 1 and 2 but you cant judge everything by what has gone before it! Ferrari make some lovely cars but even they have made some dogs in their time.

Come on folks question thigs (ooo thats opened a can of worms on my posting (be nice)). Dont just take it for granted ones better than the other. Play them when you get a chance, read up about them make an educated choice dont just go along with:

"Yerh me mates dad emulated a PS3 using a speak and spell and a pair of major morgans, Its Mint"

Good luck for the launch Microsoft
and i'll be saying the same in for the other come 06/07

dont just think microsoft are out for your money!
What, Sony and Nintendo aren't either?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Yeah - from zero to serious contender to one of the largest monopolies in the world (Sonys Playstation brand) in less than 4 years? Yeah - MS have failed alright..."

Sony don't have a monopoly, they have about 70% market share, which is good because competition is ultimately benefits us the consumer. If you want to talk about true monopolies, look at MS Windows.

"Sony don't have a monopoly, they have about 70% market share, which is good because competition is ultimately benefits us the consumer. If you want to talk about true monopolies, look at MS Windows".

This wasn't about monopolies (though a 70% to 0% market share counts as a monopoly in my book) - it was about Captain Retard claiming that MS has "failed"with the Xbox, and will "fail" again with the 360. I realize that he's just a 13 year-old boy with some sort of mental disability, but there you go...
  • smelly #44 6 years ago

A better example of a monopoly is the bbc.. where you have to pay to watch their programs, even if you only want to watch their competitors stations....
  • Gouki #45 6 years ago

he's got it in a nutshell!!

its not about market share, who will win, monopolies etc....

its about Numbnuts and his band of chavs claiming that MS has "failed" already.

"yerh got it coz me matez gott it, sez its mint, gis yer ed a bang".

    IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Call it Kappa 360 or Burbery 360, will sell by the shed load.

To all those XBox fanboys out there:

So...where did the other 42% go.... PC gamers you say? ahhhh....

Anyway, it is well known that the ps3 will outsell the xb2. For one reason and one reason alone. (see mirkan's argument)

Anyway, why does this not include pc/rev. questions? And does this mean that ppl only buy one? Because i usually get more than one console (even if it only has one game worth playing).
  • chronom4n #50 6 years ago

all you fanboys! what is your actual age. i mean get real, the ps3 is not even out and the 360, when that is about under a month away or so. you all talk like some immature children, my way of thinking is that the marketing men have you well and truly sewn up. what if the ps3 turns out to be a major dissapointment? how are you then going to react. and here is something, there is apodcast dedicated to the 360 on the itunes store under major nelson one of the lead xbox live guys, and it has been up and running for the last 2-3 months at least and that is where i go to listen to about the 360. are you guys even listening to that? i see no sont podcast up and running. at the end of the day all that matters is how much gaming pleasure you are getting. here is an analogy i think. mercedes benz... recently there cars have been seeing more of the dealers garages then they have been seeing the road. does that make me want to buy a mercedes benz. hell no! get my point. And finally the overall package with microsoft is much more user friendly.. you guys can make your own mind up.
  • Bates #51 6 years ago

"what if the ps3 turns out to be a major dissapointment?"

Then I'm sure the Xbox fans will get to gloat to their hearts content, and rub Sony fans noses in it for years to come. That's what makes them such big shots.

Nice to see the Nazi tactics of persecuting anyone who says anything that doesn't agree with the '360 walks on water' attitude on these comments threads is well in effect.

Hope grinding people down just because they're looking forward to the PS3 makes you all feel like hard men you uptight cunts.
  • SeesThroughAll #52 6 years ago

You do make valid points, chronom4n

"what if the ps3 turns out to be a major dissapointment?"

If I ever decide to buy one, and get disappointed, I'll call it a disappointment. What would you do if you felt disappointed about the X360? Of course, you simply cannot, you already set your mind not to get disappointed, regardless of how far reality gets from the hype. This is how Microsoft succeeds.

"...i see no sony podcast up and running. at the end of the day all that matters is how much gaming pleasure you are getting."

Pardon me if I don't share your enthusiasm about the 360, but I can also assure you I'm not drooling over the PS3 either. The fact that neither Sony nor Nintendo are as obsessed about brainwashing consumers as Microsoft has been for a long time should tell you a lot about for how long they actually intend to cater for the consumer.

As far as gameplay satisfaction goes, I regard Sony or Microsoft consoles as equivalent. Most of the best video games currently available are released by third party producers, not the hardware suppliers.

"And finally the overall package with microsoft is much more user friendly.. you guys can make your own mind up."

Nintendo has way more user-friendly packages available, video games wise, but I'm still not their client, nevertheless.

Lavant's post is right we need the competition it lowers prices it causes the industry to be more imaginative but what we dont need every time we use a forum is to hear the same arguments for and against by people who are just blinded by what their friends have or what they believe their friends will like. Its not status (well it shouldnt be). It should be about what you like based on games etc....

oh why do i bother because months on from this i'll still hear this arguement.

  • SlackMaster #55 6 years ago

  • Talha #59 6 years ago

Although the sample size is a ridiculously small 1,000 people, it wouldn't do Sony or MS to any good to ignore this. for Sony, their lead is only about a fraction. For MS, people clearly aren't that impressed by their launch lineup.

Time to do some REAL work, boys.
  • squaylor #60 6 years ago

I've never really understood blatant fanboyism. If you like one of the consoles then surely you like gaming enough to appreciate the other systems on the market too. Sticking solely with one over all the others seems pointless. Even more so when it's because of the company behind the product, rather than the product itself or the games. If you followed football, you support the players and the team they play for - not the chairman or the owner.

If you want to live with your disillusions and blank out all but one supplier, then fair enough. I like gaming for what it is, not who it is - so I own consoles by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, and enjoy using all of them.
  • Talha #61 6 years ago

"I've never really understood blatant fanboyism. If you like one of the consoles then surely you like gaming enough to appreciate the other systems on the market too."

Squaylor: I'd pay you for a right to quote this statement. Bravo!
  • KnickKnack #62 6 years ago

Consoles are just one more thing people like to segregate themselves with, just like football teams, religion, which school you went to, what street you live on, which country you're from and every other thing that people like to use as a reason to hate someone else.

As far as I can tell, mankind likes to fight itself for no reason.

Sorry, were we talking about consoles?

  • jimmyboo #65 6 years ago

One can assume that the other 41% of corresponds said "neither" to the question. One could thus draw the conclusion that, had Revolution been put on the ticket, a (perhaps sizeable) chunk of that 41% would have plumped for Nintendo. Maybe.

But the article does not actually tell us what the exact question was. It could have been "If you had the money, which console would you buy?" or just "Will you buy a next gen console? If so, which one?". Eurogamer really should do something about the less than stellar reporting...
