Onimusha Dawn of Dreams dated

It's all happening in early 2006.

Capcom's announced that Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams will be released in Japan in January, and over in the States a couple of months later in March. Meanwhile, Capcom Eurosoft says we can also expect it sometime in Q1.

As Onimusha devotees will already know, Dawn of Dreams is the fourth instalment in the PS2 series, and takes place some 16 years after the events of Onimusha 3. Players control Soki, a young warrior living under the reign of Hideyoshi.

All seems to be going swimmingly (lots of barbecues, camp-fires, sing-alongs - that sort of thing), when all of a sudden a red star appears in the sky, and the land's suddenly wracked with horrible natural disasters. Then the demons show up, and Soki's mystical powers come to the fore. Good news for him.

Back at its announcement pre-E3, Capcom said Dawn of Dreams would be the first Onimusha game to use a proper, over-the-shoulder-style third-person camera, and with the game just a few months off now we're told that the theme tunes will be new songs performed by Ayumi Hamasaki. Rob probably knows who that is, but we don't, so we'll just stop.

Onimusha 3 was a stellar piece of gaming goodness... made me forget about the Meh-ness of Onimusha 2...

Sooo... Onimusha 4 then. Here's hoping, I really wouldn't mind beating up those Genma again... as long as it's good... over-the-shoulder camera though... hmm...

    SACRILEGE!!!!!

Onimusha 2 is far surperior to the travesty that was Oni 3.

I've not played very long in Oni 3, but so far it's a mess. I just find timetravelling on the border of ridiculous. Keep it old, keep it japanese I say.

I agree with OnlyMe, Oni 3 is technically nice, as is the GORGEOUS intro movie, but yeah that time traveling story pretty much destroyed the atmosphere in the game, I just couldn't play it with a straight face!

The time travelling was silly and unnecessary, but it added something new to a series where the story had fairly little leg room left to move. It was still a beautiful piece of work though, even if I do wonder what the point was in those missions where you control that woman.

Not long to wait then, awesome. And an Ayumi Theme song to boot, I just hope it's not removed in localisation :(
  • absolutezero #11 6 years ago

Aysir this is the same series of games that made Jean Reno American. Yeah, shes gone. That for me however is a massive plus.

Over the Shoulder worked in RE4, im not sure how well it will in a game based on swordplay though. Thats one of the reasons why the Chainsaw was removed from the PS2 version, it was just too hard to implement it well. Of course Capcom came up with a crappy "Its not something Leon would use." excuse, yeah because he's use a laser gun?

Oni' 2 for nigh on perfect feudal Japan atmosphere, cool NPC bartering sections, and some very interesting RPG elements.

Oni' 3 for the best control combat of the 3, the most imaginative level design, and the most ambitious storyline.

I like them about the same, but find Oni' 3 much more conducive to pick-up-and-play/ replay.
