NBA 2K7 to use PS3 tilt thingy

2K Sports talks features.

I will now attempt to write about a basketball game! 2K Sports' upcoming PlayStation 3 version of NBA 2K7 (due out next March, obviously) will introduce the ability to shoot from the free-throw line using the "Sixaxis" controller's tilt sensor functionality. Altogether: ooooh!

Other things 2K's wittering on about include the return of last year's "shot stick pro" (no idea), the capture of individual players' distinctive movements, and authentic NBA motion-captured post moves like quick spins, drop steps, hooks, and fade-aways.

On top of that, there's a player-creator, and franchise mode claims to be the best ever with "multiplayer franchise, 3 team trading, progressive fatigue and season awards". As for general multiplay, there'll be no dumping of that here - quite the contrary in fact, with up to seven players supported on one PS3 and the ability to play five-on-five games over the Internet.

All sounds good, although I really wouldn't know. They've also sent out some pretty pictures. NBA 2K7 is due out on PS3 next March, with PS2, Xbox and Xbox 360 versions already available.

    OMG.
And so it begins.... the shoehorning of the tilt.

Oooooh supports 7 player offline eh?
Well it was predicted that sports titles would use all seven controllers, saves money on those Multi-taps Sony sells on the PS2.

If you've played the Xbox 360 demo and have had the chance to take a few of the free throws, this isn't in fact anything special at all... In fact it just replaces the back and forward motion of the right analogue stick.

NBA 2K7 is actually quite nice to play, and for the first year ever I will probably be buying this over NBA Live 07 as from what I've heard, they have royally f***ed that up.

Shall have to wait and see.

Shoehorning is most certainly the word that springs to mind.
  • penhalion #4 6 years ago

Yep what next? Tilt support for monopoly online!

Ok thinking about it shaking the controller to throw the dice is actually a genius idea...bugger bet someone nicks that sharpish!

And people still insist on slagging off the Wii... Excuse me while I don't fall off my chair.

    Is it necessary?

    .

    ..

    No, I didn't think so.
  • jmctavish #7 6 years ago

Don't underestimate how many people are going to think this pad does the same stuff as the Wii controller.
  • Eighthours #8 6 years ago

Is this 5 on 5 online in the 360 version as well? Or is this the first example of expanded online play on PS3?
  • brooza #9 6 years ago

Tom should review the game when it comes out
  • skillian #10 6 years ago

5 on 5 online will be fricking superb.

    Sixaxis = Tilting controller.

It's not exactly a tilting controller if it can be monitored wether you picked up the controller or not.
  • penhalion #12 6 years ago

What do you mean "be monitored whether you pick it up or not"?

It's bluetooth, so is constantly transmitting to stay connected to the console, that's not monitoring, that's standard handshaking protocol for a wireless device.

There wouldn't be any control feedback if you simply left the thing switched on on your coffee table for instance (unless you happen to be experiencing an earthquake at the time!

Or you could just buy a Wii and have it all!

*Waiting for the Sony fanboy backlash*
  • Ignatius_Cheese #14 6 years ago

Am I the only person to notice that 2K have managed to neuter all the players...? There's something slightly disturbing about pseudo-photorealistic guys with no wangs...
  • infoxicated #15 6 years ago

"Or you could just buy a Wii and have it all!"

By "all" I take it you mean a zillion Mario/Zelda sequels, previous gen graphics, and no ability to play HD content.

    Riiiight. I get you.
  • NoCodeNed2 #16 6 years ago

@Penhalion - he means the PS3 knows when the controller's been picked up.
  • lambtron #17 6 years ago

"Uhm considering that the two controllers look completely different I don't think they will confuse the functionality."

Sir, I believe you overestimate the intelligence of Joe Public.

Very true, if basketball is your thing then avoid NBA Live 07

"If anyone deserves the tag "hardcore fan" it's us. We have stuck by EA and NBA Live in the face of serious competition from the 2K series. For us however, NBA Live 07 is the final straw.... Until this release we overlooked any flaws in the game, ones that some of us considered major even if others of us considered them minor.

...Whether EA does or does not care about its fans, the bigger issue is perception, and the image that EA presents is that they don't care. Every year, we as a community submit one or more wishlists, often with the same wishes from year to year. A lack of implementation of the wishes sows seeds of belief that EA isn't paying attention. When EA releases a game in which the CPU won't even use its bench, and overrides user substitutions, it sows seeds that EA doesn't care and just wanted to cash in. When major online media do not recieve review copies, it leads to the belief that EA knew the product was defective but proceeded anyway. When community members contact EA and receive a response that seems to imply EA isn't too interested in fixing the problems, and telling us to wait until the next game, it does quite a bit of harm to our faith in the company. The Sixaxis isn't limited to just tilt.
A game can read wether the controller is moving up from it's initial position.

    Tilt is primitive tech dude.
  • captainrentboy #20 6 years ago

All this motion sensitive malarky,I have a feeling that six months down the line the vast majority of us will be thoroughly bored with it all,and will happily revert back to the good ole dual analogue sticks and realise they were the best option after all.
I mean the eyetoy and its games initially thrilled me,it was like some sort of cosmic witchcraft controlling things with movement, then I realised gaming is supposed to be relaxing and I was just knackering myself out whilst looking like a twat in the process, haven't used an Eyetoy for bastard months now.

"The Sixaxis isn't limited to just tilt.

So it notices that it's been "tilted" as it's picked up, ooohhh. o_0

    "Tilt is primitive tech dude."
As is inertia tech, but hey.
  • Rambaldi #22 6 years ago

Wow! Way to go Sony! Dig your heels in over rumble technolgy and replace it for a simplistic tilt control that's going to have devs scratching their heads as to how to incorporate it into games without it coming across like an afterthought! Wow!

P.S. thanks for the online effort too guys!!Wowee!

/rubs out VT3 and THP8 from PS3 shopping list and adds them to 360 one
    /realises PS3 wasn't on shoping list anyways
  • spongebob #23 6 years ago

Good job Rambaldi! I guess you think the same about Nintendo as well.
  • chupachups #24 6 years ago

"The Sixaxis isn't limited to just tilt. A game can read wether the controller is moving up from it's initial position. "

No it can't. All it can tell is if it's been tilted. It can tell if you pick it up, because when you pick it up... you tilt it.

The reason the PS3 controller has no sensor bars is because it can't tell where it is. If you want to tell position, you need an outside frame of reference, it's a law of physics. Even GPS units have sensor bars, they're constantly in orbit around the earth.

"Don't underestimate how many people are going to think this pad does the same stuff as the Wii controller."

Definitely, loads of people fell for Sony's speech about the PS3 controller not needing sensor bars, as if the PS3 controller even did the 3D positioning stuff that the Wii does.

  • JediMasterMalik #25 6 years ago

chupachups, we've been through his before with you. The Sony controller does NOT only sense tilt, it senses through x, y, and z both directions, as well as pitch, yaw, and roll, it does everything the Wii does, without the position awareness, which the Wii uses a sensor bar for, the Wii tech is NOT as far more advanced than the PS3 controller than some of you fools seem to think.
  • SeesThroughAll #26 6 years ago

Definitely, loads of people fell for Sony's speech about the PS3 controller not needing sensor bars, as if the PS3 controller even did the 3D positioning stuff that the Wii does.

That's because that "speech" specifically was not a lie. It doesn't use a sensor bar, so it never gives back any information about it's position. And in E3, they pretty much showed everything it does. EVERYBODY KNOWS the PS3 controller limitations with respect to the Wiimote. As well as the advantage, some would say, of remaining a traditional controller at heart.
  • Arwin #27 6 years ago

The difference is mainly that the sensor bar helps the pointing accuracy of the wii controller. Both can determine movement along the 'six'axis ...
