Far Cry for Xbox only News

PlayStation 2 Xbox News by Ellie Gibson

10 June, 2005

Ubisoft has confirmed to Eurogamer that the console version of PC shooter Far Cry Instincts is currently only planned for Xbox.

That's not to say the previously mooted PS2 version won't ever happen, however. A Ubisoft representative told us that "Other formats are being considered," adding that there was "a very big possibility" of the game appearing on Sony's console.

Far Cry Instincts puts you in the role of Jack Carver, a man struggling for survival as he faces off with a load of trigger-happy mercenaries in a tropical wilderness. Expect lots of stealth, trap-setting and long range battles as well as close-up combat.

You get a healthy arsenal of realistic-looking weapons to play with, and vehicles include ATVs, gunboats and hang gliders. As you progress through the game your skills improve and your senses become heightened, so you can move faster, spot your enemies from further away and even track their scent.

Intense multiplayer gameplay is promised, along with the option to build custom maps in real-time and upload them via Xbox Live for tailor-made deathmatches.

Far Cry Instincts is out on September 22. In the meantime you'll find some screenshots here, and a rather excellent trailer on Eurofiles.

looks good and looks obvious that the PS2 or cube couldn't ever manage anything quite so expansive looking or graphics anything close to the original. No matter how much they tried to strong arm the machines into managing it - they just can't.

I still say the Far cry engine is the most adaptable and advanced game engine on current release as a game. Lighting & texture as good as doom3, spaces as big as HL2, plus the damn thing is deformable with great physics. what else do developers need? Oh yeah a good editor. Hmm ;)

screenshots dont mean shit mate, it proberly ran at 2frames per second.. This past year the xbox has really been showing off its extra power compaired to the ps2.. espeically in the FPS genre. Developers have already said doom3 and half-life2 did not get ps2 releases beacuse the machine couldnt handle it.. im not surprized far-cry has gone the same way.

Not supprising really - given that FarCry is a pretty demanding PC game, and that the PS2 is a bit underpowered and very far removed from PC archetecture.

Still, the Transformers game proved that the PS2 can get somewhere in the region of FarCry's scale, scope and general 'loads of trees-ness'. So if Ubisoft decided to licence the engine......

Nahhh, thats never gonna happen.

By the way, was there an interesting story to this game (other than commando with a mission to destroy evildoer)?

You'd imagine they tried very hard to make the PS2 version happen, considering the size of the market. Still, good call on canceling it for now. While even a crappy PS2 game tends to make some money, you can't buy reputation.

Hasn't stopped Ubi from putting out crappy PS2 versions of Ghost Recon.

FarCry could easily run on the PS2 with the graphics cut down a bit - may look old next to a high end PC or xbox, but not against other PS2 fps's. I have it running fine on my old laptop (Geforce4).

Yeah - that's what I don't understand. Why go so far and then can it? It must have cost them loads of money. It just goes to show the Xbox definitely has the upper hand when it comes to PC conversions.

Yeah, Transformers... that was a great game on PS2, I couldn't beleive the draw distance on that game when I first played it. I loved that game... really good blast and some great boss fights. Hmm... I should pick that up as bargain bin game again.

I've got a feeling the hard disk helps a lot for these types of conversions (more so than the GPU / CPU).

the fact that it's in effect a pc in a box has a lot to do with it as well.

Pc to xbox conversions are piece of piss.. The other way around less so.

But this isnt a conversion.. its a new game..

Who knows what the real reason for the ps2 version being canned is? Might be crap framerates, the fact they thought it looked shit, they couldnt fit it all in memory without making the xbox version suffer, etc etc.

Actually, it was quite clear from the beginning that the ps2 would not be able to do that in a million years but id recon that the ubisoft peeps just said "multiple consoles" just to avoid the ps2 fanboy army from burning them down to the ground.

The ps3 might be good nuff to run the xbox conversion though. In time. Perhaps. :\

Ow and ehh, LittleJohn? Saying that FC will run on the ps2 because you have it running on a GF4... well...err...hate to burst your bubble mate, but even if you would cut that GF4 into a thousand pieces, each piece would still outpower the ps2 by a large number. If the GF4 would be a Blue Gene/L then the ps2 would be a solar powerd pocket calculator that is limited to simple calculations.

Really pleased to see this happening. The PS2 version was being hammered in some previews & if they've pulled it because they can't resolve it, they've got my respect, rather than releasing a game that just clearly isn't going to do them any justice.
