Super Smash Bros. coming to Wii

Brawl to feature Wario, Kid Icarus, Solid Snake.

Speaking at a special event after the first day of the E3 show in Los Angeles, Nintendo's creative boss Shigeru Miyamoto has announced another title for the Wii - namely Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Despite now being at an independent studio, series director Masahiro Sakurai is back on board for this instalment, which unlike its predecessor Super Smash Bros. Melee, won't be a launch title. Instead, it's due to appear in 2007.

Sakurai was on hand to take the stage with Miyamoto and introduce the new characters who will appear in Brawl - with Wario, Pit from Kid Icarus and Zero Suit Samus set to appear alongside the already substantial cast of characters in the series.

Metal Gear Solid star Solid Snake is also due to be a playable character, with the Konami character apparently appearing with the blessing of his creator, Hideo Kojima.

Sakurai also spoke a bit about the controls of the new Wii iteration of the game - stating that it will offer players the option of controlling the game entirely using the GameCube control pad, since the developers don't wish to alienate fans of the series' traditional gameplay.

We'll have more details on Super Smash Bros. Brawl shortly, since Tom is currently winging his way back from the event with a taped Q&A clutched in his sweaty paw.
