Miyamoto considering multiplayer for Mario Galaxy

But not a launch title.

Speaking at an after-hours E3 press briefing this evening, Shigeru Miyamoto told journalists that he's considering adding multiplayer options to Super Mario Galaxy on Wii.

He also said that while he was unprepared to commit to Mario as a launch title, it would "definitely be there within the first six months".

During a general Q&A session using pre-approved questions, which we'll have up a bit later, Miyamoto said he'd wanted, "for many years", to "have one player play as Mario and for other players to join in and play, and help out and that sort of thing".

"And with the way the Wii remote works, given that we can have up to four remotes using the player functionality simultaneously, one thing we're looking at doing for Super Mario Galaxy is allowing for multiplayer that would allow for one player to control Mario with the second, third and fourth players using the Wii remote to help him out, perhaps get in his way - and so we're looking at different ideas with how to work with that," he said.

The Q&A session was tagged on the end of a press presentation of a CG trailer for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which is due out on Wii in 2007, and which Masahiro Sakurai - formerly of HAL Labs - is developing with a Nintendo team set up for that purpose.

More in a bit!

    Sounds great.

Imagine three people shifting blocks around trying to squash Mario or something like that... could be hilarious.

im a little sick of hearing 'oh but its not a launch title' honestly ninty you need to be running out the blocks this time mate. console popularity is a sprint not a long distance, well know who is the winner in 12 months time.

    Yeah, I agree actually.

Being able to pick up Mario 64 at launch was absolutely amazing. Altho Mario Sunshine was rubbish, it would have been miles better if it had been at launch. I don't understand why companies don't keep their consoles under wraps and then make a big announcement when they know they can get these awesome games out at launch.

Still, Twilight Princess will be very welcome.

At launch, you only get your early adopter nerd purchasers.

You need a steady flow of games to convince people to keep buying after the initial launch.

Making out a console will fail if it doesnt have hundreds of great games at launch is silly when you look at history (for example the ps2 launch anyone?).

Also if you watch the nintendo pre show conference they seemed to want to play down sequels to their existing ip and show new titles. (which is probably why SMBB wasnt shown).

Everyone keeps posting on message boards slagging off nintendo for constantly making sequels to existing ip. But when they do decide to release without said ip at launch, people slag them off for that too.

Maybe people should make up their minds? :-)

Multiplayer would be a great idea, but I do hope they don't sacrifice the quality of the single-player.

Not bothered if it's not a launch title. as Zelda will keep me more than busy. Besides, I'd rather they wait and make sure the game is perfect before releasing it.
