GDC: Allard's Xbox 2 keynote video, 'Guide' screenshots News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

10 March, 2005

A video recording of J Allard's GDC 2005 keynote, in which the XNA chief spoke of Xbox 2's "High Def" future and identified key elements of Microsoft's next-generation strategy, is now available from Eurofiles.

Microsoft has now released high-resolution screenshots of its Xbox 2 "Guide", which "is an entertainment gateway that instantly connects players to their games, their friends and their digital media".

Microsoft has also made Allard's address available in MP3 and WM audio formats on its US Xbox website here along with a full transcript for those of you who'd rather read.

For those of you who didn't catch Allard's revelations ahead of time yesterday afternoon when, embarrassingly for Microsoft, the vast majority of the key elements were leaked ahead of time by a Dutch PR firm, there's a full report on the keynote elsewhere on the site today.

Xbox 2 will be unveiled at the E3 trade show in Los Angeles in just over two months from now.

I want to see one console manufacturer allow Indie-developers to create games for their platform.

Now where on earth can you buy a HDTV for small money?

Is there even a standardised HDTV format for Europe yet?

I believe a European HDTV standard was proposed recently. There was a thread on it.

As I said on one of the other threads, Sky are launching an HDTV service in 2006. HDTV-ready tellies are set to start appearing this year, although I believe some Sony tellies made last year are already compatible although not labelled as such.

Yup, some are Blerk, you just need to look out for an 'HDTV Ready' label (forgot the socket type now)

I hope they don't just do larger 28" and above HDTV's. They'd better be CRT too.

I think it'll just be 'larger screen' models, actually. You need a big screen to get the most out of it.

A little linky about HDTV tellies from Sony.

I not aware of any CRT HDTVs available anywhere, Plasma, LCD, Rear projection DLP etc, but no CRT. And as Blerk says I've not seen any smaller than 32" either.

I work in the TV/Broadcast industry and have been working with the US and Asian HD systems for a few years, the picture is amazing, just as long as the broadcaster hasn't applied to much compression that is. Given the crap compression ratios we get for standard TV here in the UK (Sky are one of the biggest, probably slightly better than NTL though) I don't hold out that much hope.

You can get small (28") CRT HDTV's in the US, which also have DVI/HDMI. They are very reasonably priced as well. I predict it will take 5 years at least until the UK market has reached the same level. Thus, a main selling point of the xbox2 is largely meaningless to a UK audience.

I don't know why but this is all a bit dull...

I'm usually really hyped up about new consoles but all this Xbox2 stuff just isn't doing it for me...then again it took me ages to get into the original Xbox as well.

There is a far superior direct feed of the keynote (along with a truncated highlights stream) on Gamespot. I suggest people go there, instead of viewing this crap shaky-cam footage, the second part of which doesn't even work. Shame on you, EG.
