Sonic GBA remake details

Out next month in the US.

SEGA's Game Boy Advance port of the original Sonic The Hedgehog game, announced as part of Sonic's 15th anniversary celebration earlier this year, is due out on 14th November - and SEGA's offered a few more details of what's going into it.

Dubbed "Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis", the GBA title promises "perfectly ported" versions of each of the Megadrive original's seven zones, along with a special Anniversary mode that allows you to use the Spin Dash ability as well.

You'll also be able to take advantage of a proper save feature, recording progress and high scores, rather than having to start again every time you load it up like the old days version, with unlockable songs from the original soundtrack completing the package.

There's currently no word on a UK release for Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis, but if you're really keen you can always import it. Check out recently released screenshots for more retro gawping fun.

    STILL the best sonic game

So it's just the first game then? What a waste of cartridge space... :-/

"So it's just the first game then?"

Never has the word "just" been so badly used.

    Best platformer ever.

It's just the first game, but with the second game's spin dash.

Wow, where did this come from?

"Never has the word "just" been so badly used."

So you'll "just" pay for the same game yet again then? :)

    Excellent, loved the original.

I'll gladly buy it again to be able to play it on the go on a system that does not need to be dragged down from the attic. :)

I wonder how much the game will be, £30 is too much. Since you can pick up a megadrive and the game for £10, i think its only fair to charge £10 to play it on the move

I'll pick it up to play on the move, it's the original and best.

I do still like the neo geo pocket color version though :)

    Lovely.

"So you'll "just" pay for the same game yet again then? :)"

Yes. Well, I would if I had a GBA. It's an absolutely fantastic game and provided it's ported well is already suited perfectly to the portable platform. I'd throw more hours at it than any other GBA title I can think of and I'd be gobsmacked if I was alone in this mindset. The only bad thing about it is that it proves nobody has made a better platformer in 15 years, including SEGA themselves.

Of course, this is all just my opinion. But I think I've answered your question. And though I agree it's unfair to charge the same price as a new, original GBA game, if there was a £ > fun ratio this game would score very, very well.

It's a great game, still fabulously playable. But I do wonder how many platforms this is now available for....... how many times can you be expected to pay for the same thing?

Of course, it it was made available very cheaply......

    sonic.

    pfft.

surely one of the most over rated franchises ever.

  • SimonM7 #13 5 years ago

    Hrm.

I'm a huge Sonic fan, but after like.. four compilations we finally get - on Sonic's 15th anniversary - the first game again, pretty much untouched (apart from save features, yay..) on *the system whose carts stick out of my DS Lite*. I find it genuinely difficult to care, even the tiniest bit.

The least they could do is snazz it up like the Marios on GBA. If you want to play the original Sonic in its "purest" form, there's a billion ways to do that already.

    Its interesting.

But put Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles and you would have sold me on it.

However, as said, £30 for just one Sonic Mega Drive game? Nope, sorry.

Plus, EU release would be called Sonic The Hedgehog Mega Drive. Doesn't roll off the tongue.

Can't believe how many of you are lapping this up. Whack a "50 years anniversary" badge on a dead dogs steaming pile of turd and people will buy it. It's no wonder there are so many bloody cash in retro collections.

    /shakes head

Yeah but the fun factor pick up and play of 2D games hasn't been replicated that well (or that much) in today's day and age of gaming.

The fact that you can play these titles on the go just makes it more tantalising. :)

Although i refuse to pay a quarter as much as Nintendo was selling their Nes classics ages ago.
  • dudefella #17 5 years ago

If they're charging more than 15 euros for this I'd like to spit SEGA in the face by proxy. Ridiculous when you can get the Mega Collection for as much these days.
  • yaroze #18 5 years ago

It's still a neat idea, although on a smaller screen with a much smaller field of view I think I'll give this a miss.
  • SeesThroughAll #19 5 years ago

Excellent! Everybody can relive their fond Sonic memories then. :)

Unfortunately for Sega, this will actually make people even more aware of what they did to the franchise over the last years and hate them for that...
  • Lex_Luthor #20 5 years ago

Er, I'd hope this is going to be a budget release or something, like, for a tenner, because if that's all it is, then it sounds like a rip off :/

They could easily fit the first three/four Sonic games onto one cart, surely?
  • Nikanoru #21 5 years ago

Remake? I don't see any remakes. Resident Evil 1 on the Cube is a remake, this isn't.

Yes, I am in fact being bitter because you made me click the news link. :(
