I wonder how Germany is going to take this news...

Germany is the country that opposes violence in videogames right?

Or have i mixed them up with America. :S

Damn these policies!!

The game's not coming out in Germany, man. Their ratings board refused to give it a rating.

Anyway - no cuts == good.

Interestingly, the game will be "cut" in Japan. Found this on insertcredit this morning:

Also, the Japanese version will be censored in a way that removes the ability to kill innocent people. Which means the weird thrill of accidentally shooting the person you're trying to defend is gone; they can now only die by zombie hands. It's kind of a weird bit of censorship, though recently any game that lets you kill innocent people is branded the devil in Japan.

From a gaming perspective, that sounds like a good thing to me. Nothing worse that lousy AI walking the person you're protecting into the line of fire or too close to something that has an 'area-effect' and you failing a mission because of it. It's one of the reasons I despise baby-sitting style missions in games. That... and they just plain suck, of course.

Generally I agree sko, except one of the worst things about HL2 is that you can't kill the team-tards you're lumbered with. It's the one game where killing your teammates should be allowed. Other than that it's annoying to have to keep babysitting idiotic AI that runs INTO your line of fire. ffs. :(

Wonder how badly chopped the Aussie version will be?

The 'innocent people getting killed' thing is the difference between a D (17+) and Z (18+) rating in Japan. Z rated games have limits on how they can be sold and who too. All the GTA's out there so far have Z's, and in fact they were the reason they created the new rating.

There is one type of cut that may have been glaringly obvious to everyone except myself (DOH!):-

There is NO Xbox Live gameplay available, which severely limits it's long term appeal to me.

From the demo it's easily one of the most accomplished releases technically that I've seen (switching from Dead Rising to Saint's Row is like going back a generation and really quite funny), but I guess lag would be a major issue, logging everything 200 odd lumbering zombies are upto.

But surely they could have come up with a compromise to get some sort of an Online Mode?

I'm still biter about Ninja Gaiden, but frankly I don't see that it suffered too much because of it. It was still plenty violent.

However, releasing a censored Dead Rising would be rather pointless.

"which is neither PAL nor NTSC, people are stuck in the past man. "

PAL is widely used to refer to Europe in the games industry. I take your point on it not applying in a lot of cases (though many XB360 users don't have HDTV, so I would disagree its "stuck in the past") but the point of any language is simply to inform people as to your meaning. In that context its use is relevant (I would suggest anyway).

EDIT: Oh, and whoohoo!! DR is a gem of a game and zombie bashing gore is entirely relevant in this case.

When you nicely talking to Capcom you did'nt happen to ask them why we're getting the game a month behind the American release, if the game is exactly the same?

Add to that the fact that they Region Locked the game to make importing impossible. WHY, WHY DO THIS??

Is it that publishers are thinking that the sales will drop in PAL-land if they can get the games else-where, and indeed for less money than they expect us to pay? Cos thats pretty much bullshit, look at Tomb Raider Legend, Hitman and Prey, being Region free never hurt those chart placements. Maybe if they released them at the sametime I could understand the Region Locking but the delay and the locking is just idiotic.

"if the game is exactly the same?"

Its not exactly the same if the languages are different though is it? There are also many boring "marketing is ran independently per locale" reasons why different skus get different release dates.

Its an old complaint (valid or otherwise), it applies to almost all titles and it probably won't change anytime soon. Trying not to worry about it is the best path for an easy life :)

"Cos thats pretty much bullshit"

You are right, it is bullshit, thats not the reason it happens.

Played this on a friends import machine....

Zombie killing is good but, the game itself is wierd in that you tend to run out of time if you do the side missions. The story mode then seems to die. What I mean by this is that you get told (as an example) to meet someone in the storeroom at 6pm. If you are not there by that time, you never see the person and the story is over. You then have nothing to do except hang about for the rest of the game.

I am kind of hoping capcom change that for the european release as it's kind of dumb.

You can resume the game from a save point but you've only got ONE per save device so if you've only got the hard drive then that's one save only but if you have a memory unit as well then you have two. I'm glad I have the ability to save two games because you could save and then find out that you're too late for a mission, meaning you'd have to start the game all over again. The good news is that if you do have to start all over you can keep all your character's upgrades and abilities.

But what's with only having a single save? Is it really so difficult to let the player have four or eight slots?

Devil Kings with zombies, in a mall. Oh and far more brutal. Unless you're amazed by the multitude of ways you can kill a zombie this is as repetitive as it gets. Having said that it clearly is necessary to keep as much violence in it as possible. In order to make it more entertaining...

My guess is...
Because importing undermines their own international distribution arms and also skews any data they may be looking to gather on sales-trends-by-region.

Not anything you or I care about, but they will.

Also, is Dead Rising PAL50 compatable? You'd be supprised by the number of people today that still dont even bother to change their Xbox display mode, or even the number of people that still use ancient TV's to do their gaming on (seriously, some of you High-def videophiles would have a fit if you saw their setups).
Anyway, as PAL/NTSC is still a factor in home-console gaming then some companies will want to do a PAL conversion of some sort.

Anyway...... A MONTH? C'mon, thats not too bad in the grand scheme of things is it? usually we end up waiting several months, sometimes more than half a year for a game after its US release.

Bah, yer a miserable lot......

Thats the spirit jellyhead, much better to get grumpy using made up stuff than actually find stuff out, right?

@absolutezero

Region locking can come from several avenues for several reasons. Knowing how mnay copies of your game got sold where is important information for a publisher to have and region locking is a simple way of controlling that.

The cost of releasing a game varies depending where you are in the world for varioous reasons. It simply costs more to put a game on a shelf in some parts of the world. As a result the cost of a game varies around the world (which was at the root of the whole Atari Test Drive issue, something that the grumpy internet masses wholly failed to grasp).

Now if we could import our games from wherever we wanted, that would undermine the costing that every publisher is trying to do. If they release a game in the UK, but find it only sells 3 copies what assumptions can they draw from that? That it was just very unsuccessful, or that it was hugely successful but everyone imported their copies? Chances are they would assume the former and not bother releasing the sequel in the UK. Given that the vast majority of gamers buy their games from UK based companies (shops or online, doesn't matter) I think they would be peeved if there were less games on the shelves.

That isn't the only reason region locking exists, but its one of them. In some cases it may even be just about profit. This doesn't make publishers evil, or selfish, or unfriendly. It just makes them profit driven companies, which is just the real world (I really seem to be saying that a lot recently).

Anyway, rambling over.

Yes thats all well and good but importing despite how popular sites like Play-Asia have become is still pretty niche. I fail to see import numbers affecting the UK charts in the slightest.

The Publisher thing is credable but why has Eidos decided to go without Region Locking? Did that affect Hitman and Tomb Raider? Did it affect Take Two's release of Prey and Oblivion? I very much doubt it.

Region Free gaming was one of the things that attracted me to the 360, it just seems that no one seems to be taking advantage of it, why add something in and upset a fairly hardcore minority instead of adding nothing in and keeping everyone happy. I just don't see a huge publisher like Capcom dis-owning the second largest market in the World because a game sold a few hundred copies less that it normally would have.

Take Konami, if I could have imported Metal Gear Subsistance I would have, Konami deserve to sell no copies of that game because of the awful way they've gone about releasing it and Kingdom Hearts 2.

Its 2006 not 1994.

Not that its that much of a solid comparison but did Region Free DVD players cause the end of the home movie industry? Did Film Studios get that much upset about importing films?

EDIT: Whats more the game is compatible with Japanese Machines. Just not PAL. AWESOME.
