Dead Rising PAL uncensored
Capcom confirms: no cuts.
Capcom has said that Dead Rising will make it to Europe next month intact, with no cuts made to the version that came out in the USA yesterday.
"Dead Rising's brilliant violence has been completely preserved for European audiences," a spokesperson told Eurogamer. "No cuts have been made to the PAL version."
In light of what happened to Xbox exclusive Ninja Gaiden - shorn of decapitations for the sake of pacifying a few people who probably weren't going to play it anyway - several readers had written in asking whether there was anything to watch out for in Dead Rising's case. Two of them were called Paul, oddly.
You can sort of see why Pauls were concerned though - especially if you've played the demo, out on Xbox Live Marketplace at the moment, where you start off sledgehammering skulls into a fine pâté and then move on to whacking a scythe into necks and jerking heads off. Before really letting go of yourself.
The full game's currently slated for a September 8th release in the UK, although that may change. We'll be bringing you our thoughts on it soon, obviously.

Also, the Japanese version will be censored in a way that removes the ability to kill innocent people. Which means the weird thrill of accidentally shooting the person you're trying to defend is gone; they can now only die by zombie hands. It's kind of a weird bit of censorship, though recently any game that lets you kill innocent people is branded the devil in Japan.

From a gaming perspective, that sounds like a good thing to me. Nothing worse that lousy AI walking the person you're protecting into the line of fire or too close to something that has an 'area-effect' and you failing a mission because of it. It's one of the reasons I despise baby-sitting style missions in games. That... and they just plain suck, of course.

There is NO Xbox Live gameplay available, which severely limits it's long term appeal to me.
From the demo it's easily one of the most accomplished releases technically that I've seen (switching from Dead Rising to Saint's Row is like going back a generation and really quite funny), but I guess lag would be a major issue, logging everything 200 odd lumbering zombies are upto.
But surely they could have come up with a compromise to get some sort of an Online Mode?

However, releasing a censored Dead Rising would be rather pointless.

PAL is widely used to refer to Europe in the games industry. I take your point on it not applying in a lot of cases (though many XB360 users don't have HDTV, so I would disagree its "stuck in the past"
EDIT: Oh, and whoohoo!! DR is a gem of a game and zombie bashing gore is entirely relevant in this case.

Add to that the fact that they Region Locked the game to make importing impossible. WHY, WHY DO THIS??
Is it that publishers are thinking that the sales will drop in PAL-land if they can get the games else-where, and indeed for less money than they expect us to pay? Cos thats pretty much bullshit, look at Tomb Raider Legend, Hitman and Prey, being Region free never hurt those chart placements. Maybe if they released them at the sametime I could understand the Region Locking but the delay and the locking is just idiotic.

Its not exactly the same if the languages are different though is it? There are also many boring "marketing is ran independently per locale" reasons why different skus get different release dates.
Its an old complaint (valid or otherwise), it applies to almost all titles and it probably won't change anytime soon. Trying not to worry about it is the best path for an easy life
"Cos thats pretty much bullshit"
You are right, it is bullshit, thats not the reason it happens.

Eh? What have you heard? Hmmm? I accept its all rumours but I WILL NOT BE HAPPY if this isn't out on 8th. If virtual heads don't roll then real ones will.

Zombie killing is good but, the game itself is wierd in that you tend to run out of time if you do the side missions. The story mode then seems to die. What I mean by this is that you get told (as an example) to meet someone in the storeroom at 6pm. If you are not there by that time, you never see the person and the story is over. You then have nothing to do except hang about for the rest of the game.
I am kind of hoping capcom change that for the european release as it's kind of dumb.

Amen to that! I hated the Ashley sections in RE4 with a passion, and couldn't even play Ico as the main point of the game was dragging that useless bint around!

My guess is...
Because importing undermines their own international distribution arms and also skews any data they may be looking to gather on sales-trends-by-region.
Not anything you or I care about, but they will.
Also, is Dead Rising PAL50 compatable? You'd be supprised by the number of people today that still dont even bother to change their Xbox display mode, or even the number of people that still use ancient TV's to do their gaming on (seriously, some of you High-def videophiles would have a fit if you saw their setups).
Anyway, as PAL/NTSC is still a factor in home-console gaming then some companies will want to do a PAL conversion of some sort.
Anyway...... A MONTH? C'mon, thats not too bad in the grand scheme of things is it? usually we end up waiting several months, sometimes more than half a year for a game after its US release.
Bah, yer a miserable lot......

Region locking can come from several avenues for several reasons. Knowing how mnay copies of your game got sold where is important information for a publisher to have and region locking is a simple way of controlling that.
The cost of releasing a game varies depending where you are in the world for varioous reasons. It simply costs more to put a game on a shelf in some parts of the world. As a result the cost of a game varies around the world (which was at the root of the whole Atari Test Drive issue, something that the grumpy internet masses wholly failed to grasp).
Now if we could import our games from wherever we wanted, that would undermine the costing that every publisher is trying to do. If they release a game in the UK, but find it only sells 3 copies what assumptions can they draw from that? That it was just very unsuccessful, or that it was hugely successful but everyone imported their copies? Chances are they would assume the former and not bother releasing the sequel in the UK. Given that the vast majority of gamers buy their games from UK based companies (shops or online, doesn't matter) I think they would be peeved if there were less games on the shelves.
That isn't the only reason region locking exists, but its one of them. In some cases it may even be just about profit. This doesn't make publishers evil, or selfish, or unfriendly. It just makes them profit driven companies, which is just the real world (I really seem to be saying that a lot recently).
Anyway, rambling over.

The Publisher thing is credable but why has Eidos decided to go without Region Locking? Did that affect Hitman and Tomb Raider? Did it affect Take Two's release of Prey and Oblivion? I very much doubt it.
Region Free gaming was one of the things that attracted me to the 360, it just seems that no one seems to be taking advantage of it, why add something in and upset a fairly hardcore minority instead of adding nothing in and keeping everyone happy. I just don't see a huge publisher like Capcom dis-owning the second largest market in the World because a game sold a few hundred copies less that it normally would have.
Take Konami, if I could have imported Metal Gear Subsistance I would have, Konami deserve to sell no copies of that game because of the awful way they've gone about releasing it and Kingdom Hearts 2.
Its 2006 not 1994.
Not that its that much of a solid comparison but did Region Free DVD players cause the end of the home movie industry? Did Film Studios get that much upset about importing films?
EDIT: Whats more the game is compatible with Japanese Machines. Just not PAL. AWESOME.

Yes, gameprices are higher in Europe but you can still get them fairly cheap if you shop at a place like play.com instead of highstreet retailers. What's really the annoying thing is the release date; Konami, for example seems to have made a science of announcing a game and then leaving people in the PAL regions hanging for nine months or so after the US release, no matter how popular the franchise might be over here.
We still had to wait four months for the standard MGS3, and now nine months for Substinance. And that's not even mentioning the huge number of titles that they never decide to release here. Again; not a problem if it weren't for the region-locks, which make it impossible for those people who do want to play said games to do so, even if they buy them perfectly legitimately.
I just find it ironic on some level that the company which instilled regioncodes on us all in the first place; Sony, is now abandoning them for PS3 and that Microsoft, with all their claims of wanting to make Xbox360 a global phenomenon simply don't release a software update via Live or on discs that disables the 360's regionlock for games.

The uncut marketplace demo has also been released on AUS marketplace. Do a little research before spreading your perpetuated ignorace & creating false rumors. Get your facts right children.....
I'm sick of this false perception that Australia bans games on a regular basis like Germany, what a load of crap. Very few games are RC'd & even then it's legal to download them (no torrents don't count). It's usually only crappy games like Bulleproof or NARC, wich are created purley for the purpose of stiring up controversy. Considering we don't have an R18+ classification for video games, I'd say that our system is quite liberal in practice
Yes there have been a few illogical mishaps, but such a thing is rare nowdays.
