Crashday races into 2006

Just smashing.

Atari will be gracing us with its new PC bound racing title, Crashday, next February.

Developed by Moon Byte and Replay Studios, Crashday aims to mix the likes of Burnout, Stuntman, Destruction Derby, Flatout, TrackMania, Tony Hawk's (!) and Carmageddon, into one glorious whole, which hopefully wont turn out like Frankenstein's monster in the process. In slightly more palatable terms, the game features seven modes that range from regular racing and stunt driving, to wrecking and capture the flag. Are you ready for the inevitable list of features now? Heeeeere we go…

There will be 12 vehicles that can be tuned and personalised, an integrated track editor, weapons such as missiles and mines, damage modelling, action replays and multiplayer modes. If that isn’t enough, there'll also be mini-games, like vehicle long jump and checkpoint chasing, all on top of online features to let you share your created track pieces and cars. Could be fun. But…

…Tony Hawk?

Why would anyone want to play all those games in one go?

Because they've seen the trailer, maybe? And the screenshots? :)

    Can't wait for this game.

I quite like the look of this however given Atari's recent output on the PC i won't be picking up a copy of the game until after a major patch.

What is the wisdom of bringing this out only on the PC? I mean, don't arcade racing games work better on consoles? What I am concerned about, mainly, is I will surely need to replace my Radeon 9600XT for this, and since I am not a millionare, even my new card will not play this one at 60 FPS.

And frankly, even then I fail to see how this will be able to top the look of Burnout, GT4, Forza, etc. See my point?

It's indeed amazing how even a nowadays technical humble console like the PS2 can display something like GT4 no PC racing game comes even close. Though I disagree that arcade racing games generally work better on a console. Get a decent pad, and you're sorted.

Besides, I assume they aim, just like Trackmania, at the mod community, and there's an editor. For a decent editor, you need a mouse. And for mods, exchanging tracks, skins etc., you need a PC.

UncleLou: what I meant by 'working better' was mainly the framerate. I know on a PC I wil have to dish out for two NVidia 7800 GTX Sli's, to get 60 FPS, and even then I will know that the game will NOT look as good (nor feel as good, for that matter) as GT4. Same goes for rally games: Colin McRae PC is a GREAT game, but take a look at the photorealistic WRC 4 on, yes, A PEE-ESS TWO and you will want to give Codemasters a spanky.

Why do developers fail to come up with games that run smoothly on a REASONABLE machine? I assume that you would call my P4 3.0, 1 GB RAM, Radeon 9600 XT reasonable, won't you? Half Life 2 runs perfectly on this at 1024x768, and hats off to Valve for that. Paradoxically, Doom III (though technically superior but noweher as exciting looking as HL2) and Riddick run like slideshows. I cannot run NFS U2 PC on this machine at maximum settings, even at 800x600. Looking at HL2 and Far Cry running well on this (at max settings), I know there is nothing wrong with my machine.

How come those same developers make stunning looking games for consoles and their 2.5 MB video cards?

Hm, to be honest, if Doom 3 and CoR run like slideshows on your PC, there's really something wrong with it I am afraid.

Like I said though, GT4 amazes me as well. Even this new upcoming GT Legends game for the PC looks shit in comparison.

But anyway, I wouldn't want to touch a game with an editor on a console with a bargepole unless there's mouse support.

UncleLou: OK the 'slideshow' thing was just an exaggeration. CMR runs just fine while Doom III is at least playable. You are right about the editor thing though. Have you tried Xpand Rally? The game looks properly amazing and has an excellent editor. Wonder why i never see reviews of that anywhere.
