No premium mods for NWN 2

Says man in the know.

Jason 'Elidrin' Lowry, the man behind Bioware's recent Infinite Dungeons mod, has confirmed that the Premium Modules Program for Neverwinter Nights has been cancelled.

In an interview with IGN, Lowry said he was "sad" about the cancellation. Infinite Dungeons, he went on, "was scraped once in the conceptual stage. I got lucky, the reason why was an easy fix."

He went on to suggest that the program will not continue for Neverwinter Nights 2: "The 1.67 patch, some would say free expansion, was a direct result of the premium module system. It's too bad we could not keep that system working into NWN2 and beyond, it was good for both the company and the consumer, a win-win; those are hard to come by."

Neverwinter Nights 2 is due out this September.

To clarify what was said: BIOWARE will not be participating in the creation of NWN 2 premium modules. They are not "in the loop" for the game's development. Obsidian Entertainment will have charge of creating premium modules if they so choose. To say that there will be no premium modules for NWN 2 is only partially correct:

BIOWARE will not be creating premium modules for NWN 2. OBSIDIAN ENTERTAINMENT will perhaps be if the creation of said modules makes fiscal sense.

Bioware is not developing NWN 2. Obsidian Entertainment is making the game, hence they are 'in charge' of creating any premium modules that come out. Bioware opted out of the NWN license after NWN 1 and chose not to make NWN 2. So the fact that they're not making any modules for NWN 2 is no surprise. I just find that the headline for this story is misleading.

No one knows for sure how financially sucessful the premium modules have been for Bioware so it will remain to be seen whether or not it's worth the expended 'zots' to do it for NWN 2 and Obsidian.

They were successful enough to fund the Live Team and keep the game getting patched five years on. The percieved view amongst many is that Atari saw the Premium Modules as 'competition' for NWN2. If they'd gone ahead the next Bioware patch would most likely have had rideable horses, something Obsidian had to pull from NWN2's feature list.
