Movies expansion underway?

Lionhead says so.

Activision and Lionhead will shortly announce the development of an expansion pack for The Movies, according to a Lionhead forums administrator - and Activision's doing the traditional "can't comment" thing about it.

On Tuesday we reported that Activision had canned the console versions of The Movies following poor sales of the PC version.

However, in a forum discussion focusing on that decision, a Lionhead developer going by "Sam" said, "that does not mean the project is dead".

"Rest assured that the team at Lionhead Studios are as dedicated to The Movies as they've ever been; an expansion pack is currently in development (which will be announced very shortly) and we are continuing to support [the game's online community resource] The Movies Online!" he added.

When asked about that this morning, an Activision UK spokesperson said, "Activision does not comment on matters of rumour or speculation."

They also said that the console versions weren't dead, just "no longer to be published by Activision". If that other report I read was actually true, that is.

Would've played the game for longer if it was purely about making the movies and did away with the management bit. That way they could've focussed on making the moving making and editting more robust - I don't mean more complicated, just more stable.

Had it been fun I would of played it than more than a few hours but after installing it and playing it the once, it now rests on my shelf. They should of given it two playing styles, one you could play it with all the micro management stuff in so you can plan everything your way, or two take away all the mundane stuff and let you hire a studio planner that would allow you to just make movies instead of worrying about plants and where snack shops go.

The Movies really suffered from not knowing which of its two sides to focus on, ending up making both a bit insipid. Shame because the potential is huge. I suspect that any expansions will try and bumph up the movie making side of it, seeing as that's what makes this game stand out. Why they couldn't see this in the first place is beyond me.
