New Chaos Theory maps out

And causing problems on X360.

Ubisoft has re-released some new maps for Splinter Cell Chaos Theory - but some players are having trouble accessing them, just for a change.

Back in August, you may recall, Ubi made two new maps available for download: one based around a nuclear plant, the other set in the UN headquarters. Only problem was, many players complained that it was impossible to actually access the maps in-game.

Which meant Ubi was forced to withdraw them - but now they're back, along with a new versus mode map titled Polar Base.

Unfortunately, those who want to try out the new maps on their Xbox 360 could be out of luck. As detailed on the Ubisoft forums, many X360 owners are reporting that the game freezes or in some instances won't even load once the maps have been downloaded.

One poster going under the name of DamonMP reckons he has the solution: "Go and delete your CT saves first. Then go to Xbox360's website and download the backwards compatibility update and burn it to CD.

"Load it into the 360 and let it re-update your 360. Then load back up Splinter Cell and download the Xbox Live update for SC CT, and it should work fine."

Sounds like an awful lot of hassle to us, so does Ubi have a simpler solution? So far they've yet to announce one, but we'll keep you posted.

    Chaos Theory? ;)

Yup, by far the best of the series, and EG were WRONG WRONG WRONG in their review. :p

If you're using emulators to run game code and then the game code changes it's more likely to have problems. This sort of stuff will happen a lot I rekon and will only go away when 360 owners don't need to buy XBox 1 games (they'll get the 360 version).

And if it's any consolation... Ubi do seem to have this problem more than others.

Chaos Engine was really good though, maybe a little bit too hard, but really good, as most Bitmap Brothers games were. One of the latest games I remember playing on my Amiga...

EG should make a top 50 games for Amiga, C=64, Spectrum, SNES&NES, Megadrive, SMS, Dreamcast, Saturn, Play 1... I would even vote on top 50 Atari 2600, Intellivision and Colecovision too (well you would need a top 20 for Coleco... don't think 50 games were released for it during its lifespan :D).

On Amiga, it's really though to choose what to vote however. I think this is the best testament to the quality of the games on it...

I think I got a little further than the 2nd level ... maybe. I still love the art style, and out of 16 colours too...

"Did Chaos Engine really rock though, or was it just a savagely hard gauntlet clone with steampunk graphics that everyone pretended to like cos their mates did, even though no-one on earth ever got past the second level?"

No, it really rocked. The setting was cool, the graphics were awesome, the music was pretty good, and the level design was great.

I wasted away many hours on that one back on my A600 :)

Good to see some publicity on the ridiculously poor emulation on the 360. Halo aside, I'm yet to have played any of my gams without errors. Half Life 2 is unplayable, thanks to a collision detection problem, all the cutscenes in XIII skip and the audio cuts out, and Fable runs at about 12fps. Hats off to Microsoft for completely screwing it up.

Well, to be truthful, apart from these maps, Chaos Theory and all of Ubi's "Tom Clancy" games on the bwc list run absolutely awesomely. CT in 720p is quite a sight, I assure you.

well i completed chaos engine, so it wasnt that tuff. my personal amiga fave was hired guns ..... or gods
  • neuroniky #18 6 years ago

Chaos Engine got really tough in the second half of the game. By today standards, it would be considered impossible to complete... back then, game were much more difficult than today, so it was probably considered medium-high in difficulty. The final boss was HARD (and yes, this means I finished the game too, so probably ManicMinerUK it was you that didn't like the game, or you wasn't that good at playing it ;-) ), but the level design was great and the four worlds were much different one from the other. Loved it.

But... Speedball 2 was better. :D

Hey I know, let's start that whole Amiga vs Atari fanboy war again just to put some variety into these forums ;)
  • Rambaldi #20 6 years ago

Oh and if we're talking about the best games from that era: Stunt Car Racer
  • reality_cheque #21 6 years ago

Hired Guns? Now that was a game I struggled with. Either I was naturally ungifted, or it just never clicked with me. Which is a damn shame, as that was a damn good concept for a game.

Alien Breed was a classic :) Anyone remember Hunter for the amiga?
  • neuroniky #22 6 years ago

Hunter? Nice one, but Midwinter 2 was much better. Stunt Car Racer was a blast, one of the best racer ever made for any platform... and speaking of racers, Supercars 2 was a personal fav of mine (and my brother).
  • w00t #23 6 years ago

Alien Breed was great. Me and my brother would piss ourselves laughing as we thought the noise the alien made when it appeared sounded like someone saying 'chocolate dip'.

    1942 was ace too.
