More videogame movies coming News

PC PlayStation 2 GameCube Xbox GameBoy Advance PSOne Dreamcast PSP DS N-Gage Xbox 360 Gizmondo Mobile PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Ellie Gibson

8 November, 2005

Since when did Hollywood stop coming up with original ideas and start nicking game concepts instead? Big screen adaptations of Silent Hill, BloodRayne and Castlevania are already on the way, and now two more videogame adaptations have been announced - alas, not there's still no sign of Katamari Damacy: The Movie.

First up is news that production company Maxmedia has acquired the rights to develop a film based on Kameo: Elements of Power, Rare's forthcoming Xbox 360 title. The full-length animated film will be written and directed by Sunmin Park, who also did Wonderful Days (known as Sky Blue in the US), an animated movie about how pollution is really bad and wrong.

Then there's good news for Resident Evil fans - according to The Hollywood Reporter, Paul S. Anderson, who directed the original film, is returning to take on Resident Evil: Afterlife. Anderson, you may recall, also directed Alien vs. Predator and the Mortal Kombat movie, and is currently working on Castlevania. Milla Jovovich will also be back to play Alice once again, and the movie will be produced by Constantin Film and Davis films.

As yet there's no release date for either film, but work on the Kameo movie is set to start next year.

Videogame movies don't have to be crap. Game fans are generally elitist bastards and nothing will ever please them when converting a game to a movie, even if it IS genuinely a good movie. Part of the problem is that people already decide the movie will be bad before they even see it.

Nope.

Batman: The Movie was a great game on the Amiga 500 many years ago.

King Kong looks good here in 2005.

Really enjoyed the first 2 Resident Evil films - bit of a shock as I was expecting them to be dire.

When did they start?

Have you ever watched any of the videogame adaptations? They are, almost without exception, utter shite. It's not about being elitist, it's about them being total crap. Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil are about as good as it gets, which really isn't saying much.

Games based on movies suck

Riddick, The Warriors, Aladdin, Spiderman, TIE Fighter, KOTOR?

PearOfAnguish - yes, most of them are crap. But they don't -have- to be. People seem to think that a movie of a game is automatically **** JUST because it's a movie of a game.

And the RE movies are actually pretty decent. If you like zombie flicks (which I do) then they're rather good. They're as good as almost any zombie movie around.

What about Platoon on the C64?

What about 'that' N64 Bond game?

What about Riddick?

Games based on films are not ALLLLWAYS terrible.

Films based on games though...well now THAT is another story.

Streetfighter as a live action movie...and gawd damn, then they made a Streetfighter game BASED on the Streetfighter film.

Awesome!

Can you blame them? Paul Anderson's best film was Event Horizen, which was surrounded by rumours of other people actually putting together a decent edit, and since then the man has done nothing but make utter crap. After he'd finished destroying whatever credibility there was for videogame movies he then moved on to fucking up the Alien AND Predator franchises. And Uwe Boll...c'mon...he has never, ever made one film worth bothering with. I'm not just talking about his videogames movies, the man's 'career' is a joke, he's raping the dead corpse that Anderson left behind and movie and game fans have every right to reel in horror when either of these two fuckwits are linked to anything.

And the RE movies are actually pretty decent. If you like zombie flicks (which I do) then they're rather good. They're as good as almost any zombie movie around.

I love zombie movies. Both RE movies are crap. They're crap films and they're crap zombie films. Romero should have been allowed to do it then we might have got something more interesting than the watered-down kiddie shit-a-thon that was RE 1 & 2. As good as any zombie movie around? Sure sparky, next time I feel like watching a decent horror I'll put on RE instead of Dawn of the Dead, Zombie Flesh Eaters or Re-Animator.

'Mobile phones are quickly becoming the entertainment device of choice for many consumers' what a load of cack !!! Lets pay 20 quid to watch a film on a tiny screen or lets pay 10 quid to watch the dvd on a big tele in surround sound, and thats without even getting into consoles as 'entertainment device of choice'

I think the original Resident Evil was OK at best, and Doom was average... but that's really pushing things... Mortal Kombat was OK... god, this is HARD!

Remind me never to pick this as a subject for Mastermind...

Well, I picked up Constantine dirt cheap as part of GAME's Deal Of The Week some months back now, and not having seen the film, have found it to be quite fun and enjoyable, despite the critical drubbing it received upon release.

Has certainly made me want to see the film more so now.

Kameo animated movie? Umm.. Pollution is bad? FFS! Haven't those people heard of Fern Gully?! The plot sounds soooo 1990s... Oh look, those horrid people in the Amazon are destroying trees for a living, but Kameo will make these people look toward sustainable rainforests and cut back on fossil fuel.
