Warners seeks Justice

New DC comics game coming.

Calling all caped crusaders, men of steel and women of wonder - Warner Bros. has announced that a new Justice League of America RPG, based on the DC comic books of the same name, is currently in development for PS2 and Xbox.

The game will feature a healthy selection of the world's greatest super heroes, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Zatanna and Flash ah-ahh, saviour of the universe.

Each will possess unique super powers specific to their character, giving you a variety of fighting styles to choose from as you bring down the forces of evil. Plus you'll be able to customise their skills and team up with a fellow super hero for two-player co-operative combat.

"The joy of the Justice League as a game is the chance to be your favourite characters and to interact with the rest of the team in the rich fantasy world of the DC universe," said DC Comics bigwig Paul Levitz.

Warner Bros.'s Jason Hall added: "The innovative and highly engaging combat system will capture the strength and appeal of the characters, offering players a tremendously fun and rewarding experience."

Justice League of America is due out in autumn 2006.

So it's Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance with superheroes again? Just like that X-Men game? i.e. not an RPG at all.

    /sighs

Doh, read that tag line on the main page too quick and missed the word comic. Got all excited for a moment there thinking there was gonna be some new Dreamcast IP.

DC have such useless super heroes, except for Batman.

I'm looking at you, Superman. Honestly - a man powered by the sun? Laser eyes, indestructible, flight, works in space, icy breath - the guy's got the lot. It's crap. And they want to make another film of him? Let it die, guys, seriously - it's archaic morale-boosting rubbish from a bygone era.

Flash is not "Flash Gordon" but another hero whose power is to run very fast.

The Justice League stuff follows the premise of Balance explored by the Batman Begins movie, i.e we have bullet proof vests, they have armour piercing rounds. So there are Super badguys who can defeat Superman et al, and vice-versa.

    Teeth, you're an idiot.

You're not the one having to make a game with Superman in (I'm not working on the one in the article I should point out). How do you justify death of the main character? The man cannot be killed. The fact they're making a new Superman film at this stage says to me they've run out of good super heroes to make films out of. Superman is rubbish.

Shouldn't it be "The Flash" without the "ah-ahh, saviour of the universe".

Unless it was intended as a *hilarious* play on character names.

    LOL. Nice one.

I am with you on this one. Superman has bright red pants for gods sake. The last time I wore bright red pants I was about 4 yrs old.

    Superman is a bit craptacular.

But Smallville is quite good, and Bryan Singer is making the film (Usual Suspects, X-Men) so it could turn out okay.

I loved X-Men Legends so, by way of logical conclusion, I will like this too!
  • tengu #15 7 years ago

You don't get the point of Superman at all, do you? Idiots all.

So do tell us, all knowing pingu.

    I can't be bothered.

    Tengu is right.

I do sympathise with you though Teeth. It must be hard making a game where you can’t fit the main protagonist into a generic game character that already exists. “Oh no, a health bar doesn’t make sense and he can’t die!!! What shall we do??” Yes, its that kind of problem that has meant there has never been a good Supes game. It must be so hard to be original. Thinking out of the box is just an awful thing to have to do, whatever will you do?

It’s a shame as if anyone could ever get the essence of Superman it would be a great game. The whole point is that whilst he is invincible, the people he loves and needs to protect are not, and he faces a constant moral struggle with what is appropriate use of his powers. Amazing how the comics have managed to keep that going for 50 odd years, but you can’t even make one decent game out of it.

I do get that. I do get the point. I'm not the designer anyway. It's still stupid.

Yes, Superman has to look after people and failure for him is represented by the harm done to those he's sworn to protect, rather than any harm inflicted on himself. You would have to be an idiot not to see that. What I'm saying is that when you put him alongside other superheroes he just seems really lame - most superheroes have to deal with the idea that their own lives aren't worth as much as the people they're trying to save anyway, so it's not some unique concept at all.

I don't really appreciate the sarcasm either, kalel. It wounds my pride as a game player to hear that sort of stuff, not to mention my pride as a developer.

Personally I wanted to go for some kind of race mentality, whereby if you got hit you would be slowed down and would be less likely to achieve your goals. Fact is, it doesn't translate to the kind of fun that the people who commision these games are expecting, so don't get high and mighty about thinking outside the box thanks very much.
  • tengu #20 7 years ago

Yes teeth, I'm sure you'd do a much better job making a Superman game.
  • Teeth #21 7 years ago

Oh for goodness' sake get off your high horse.

Good point, my rant wasn't really anything to do with the article - apologies.
