Counter-Strike clan leader accused of paedophilia News

A 52 year old Canadian man has been arrested by police following allegations that he exploited his role as a Counter-Strike clan manager to solicit nude pictures of minors.
According to GotFrag.com, George "Spike" Finley of London, Ontario allegedly recruited boys aged between 10 and 13 to his clan, the Green Berets, telling them to lie about their ages to other gamers and the clan's leader, James O'Connor.
Finley is accused of asking the boys for nude pictures of themselves via the Ventrilo voice chat program. The boys allege that they were offered computer hardware, cash and clan leadership roles in return, and claim that on refusing Finley's requests, they were dropped from the clan.
"Those children would come to me with crazy accusations such as ‘Spike offered me $5000 for naked pictures,'" O’Connor told GamerTag.
“We knew George was poor, so this seemed far fetched. George went on to tell us that this person was just making up the meanest things possible to get back at him for being removed from the team. This whole thing about George possibly being a paedophile who likes children of the same sex seemed almost inconceivable. I didn't believe it at first.”
The boys began to record their conversations with Finley, and passed the recordings on to O'Connor. Finley was then dropped from the clan and reported to police.
According to the London Free Press, Finley has a prior conviction for sexually abusing a 13 year old boy in 1998, for which he was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Last June, he was given a four month custodial sentence for possession of child pornography. He has now been arrested and charged with breach of probation for contacting a child through a chatroom or online meeting place.

@Furbs: This is the problem with our hobby getting old - back when I used to play Planetarion (about 4-5 years ago), I'd say at least half of the alliance leaders I met were run by 40+ yr olds who'd been gaming since the Dragon32 era. The other half were 14yr olds with no brains, so I know which I'd prefer.
Still, it'd be nice to think I'll be doing something when I'm 54 other than running marathons like my ex's dad, running a clan doesn't seem so bad by comparison... |

This is only the beginning. I see this becoming a common issue when video and voice communication in games becomes the norm., as its set to do very soon over Live.

Hmm. What if i took pictures of me now, but photoshop it so i look really short and standing next to a birthday cake with "my 1st birthday" or something on it. If i could get some paedos to buy that, could they sue me under the trade desciptions act?

Obviously real kiddie porn should be banned because the bad stuff actually has to be done in order to make it. With fake porn, cartoons and that, it's probably still banned, because it could be claimed that watching such stuff could make people want to do it in real life.
That said, you are allowed to murder people in GTA etc, but that's OK.... |

Perhaps GTA is a bad example. I just said that because it's topical. I definitely don't think it should be banned. The excessive amounts of badness you can perpetrate in it as you describe are a consequence of the freedom it offers you. If you can beat up one guy, then why not a whole neighbourhood?
The point i was making is that you can portray many pretend crimes in film/whatever, such as speeding, robbery, murder and that, and it's OK. I think it is also legal to depict sexual crime like rape, but you can apparently get locked up for having some lewd drawings of kids. |
