Age of Empires III expansion News

PC News by Tom Bramwell

8 March, 2006

Microsoft and Ensemble have announced that there'll be an Age of Empires III expansion on shop shelves this autumn.

As yet untitled, it'll let you lead one of three Native American civilisations including the Iroquois Confederation to fight for control of the Americas.

New gameplay elements and content are also promised including a full single-player campaign, new civilisations (including content for the European ones), Home City enhancements and new maps and units.

All sounds alright, and hopefully should give fans of the original game something new to take an interest in. Whether it'll convert you is another thing entirely - for all its commercial success, we thought AoE3 was getting a bit tired.

Somehow, this joins the club of high-profile-but-curiously-ignored sequel, along side SSX4. WHat struck me the most about AoE III is sheer lack of innovation, plus noticeable rough edges in the interface and the game itself, which obviously did not receive as much care and attention as Age of Mythology.

I've been a long fan of the AOE series yet this last outing failed me completely. I simply couldnt even install the game and it would appear the installation process didnt support AMD cpu's.
Well, that was the conclusion the community came to. The devs acknowledged a problem with installation but never did anything about it.

Nobody reading this should give a damn about my personal problem, but the real issue was their lack of commitment to supporting a notoriously bugged offering.
Their tech support forum had more posts and threads than their general forum 3 months after release.

I'll never be buying any of their abandonware again.

Right, bleat over, move on, nothing to see here.... apologies for subjecting you to that.

@Pogle : While I didn't have problems installing or playing the game, I was totally pissed off by the apparent shoddiness with which the game was finalized. The fonts and the menus are horrid, coming nowhere close to the refinement seen in original AoE or AoM. I distinctly remember being awed by the animation of horse carriages going to and fro while in game installed in the orignal AoE. This one, even the title looks like a bad console cut-scene, and the grandeur and majesty that should accompany this is sorely missing. The game itself is essentially nothing new.

I've found AoE3 a bit boring compared to Age of Mythology. All the computer AI (and human AI) does is rush you. Theres no depth to it...

I do like the experience points and buying cards though.

Edit:
Does anyone know if The Lord Of The Rings: Battle For Middle Earth 2 is better than this?

Inigo: From the sounds of it, it couldn't be worse! Although I've not played BFME2, people have been saying nice things about it.
