Sony acquires Killzone dev News

PlayStation 2 News by Ellie Gibson

7 December, 2005

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced the acquisition of Guerrilla Games, developer of hit PS2 title Killzone, as part of a long term strategy to expand its development arm.

The two companies have already had a close working relationship for over a year - Guerrilla signed an exclusive development agreement with SCE in March 2004, and Sony went on to ship 2 million copies of Killzone worldwide.

The Amsterdam-based studio is now working on a PlayStation 3 instalment in the series, along with a Killzone PSP game.

SCE Worlwide Studios president Phil Harrison commented: "Guerrilla have a great combination of creative, technical and production talent in their team and we have enjoyed a close working relationship with their management and staff for a number of years."

"As we prepare for the launch of PlayStation 3 next year, this acquisition strengthens our development portfolio to take full advantage of the exciting entertainment opportunities provided by PSP, PlayStation 3 and beyond.”

Guerrilla MD Hermen Hulst added: "Sony Computer Entertainment - with its truly global presence, leading platforms and commitment to innovation - is an ideal partner for Guerrilla and we are delighted to take our existing relationship to the next level."

mind you, a complete movie of the sort of video we saw from the E3 killzone, might actually be quite good.

If you're gonna create a FPS for the PSP think Doom.

Use the dpad for movement and the analogue nub for aiming. Add up and down aiming help when moving and ignore the problem with not being able to aim up and down while moving. Chant the mantra: You wouldnt aim that well while running anyway.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/624/624671p1.html - GG admitted work on KZ2 was underway proir to the release of KZ

There was also something on Gamespot (which I'm still hunting for, but it's been a while) which covered the existence of the PS2 / PSP Killzone2.

I thought Killzone was alright too. The only reason it got such a hard time I think was because of the fucktard media branding it 'The PS2 Halo beater', which was a pretty idiotic thing to do.

Hey Killzone was not bad (so spoke the terminal Sony fanboy) - I agree that it was a victim to its own hype. I also read that Killzone 2 is due on PS2 - the PS3 version will be Killzone 3.

Sony's acquired (or close) devs usually accomplish spectacular things with its hardware (Polyphony, SotC guys, Evolution, Studio Liverpool, Sony's own devs) so we are right to expect great things. It better be, if the Playstation is to have ANY FPS credibility.

Hmm not so sure I agree with that... what about stuff like The Getaway (probably worst game I ever bought even if it was only 4 quid) and Primal. Primal wasn't terrible but it wasn't "spectacular" either.

Having said that Ico will always be one of my best-loved games.

Both The Geaways were awful. On the other hand, Primal is special for me. This games had his problems but overall, playing Primal was magical experience.

AI definitely killed Killzone, hype didn't. I enjoyed it on the grounds of atmosphere and just generally a pretty nicely thought out concept although poorly executed.

I dunno if I think they should be handling two games when they obviously had trouble with one though. I'd rather they poured all their effort into the PS3 version, because so much of the reason to play a Killzone game disappears when it's on a tiny screen.

That said, I don't see why it'd control badly. Doom? I think Goldeneye is a better template for it. Let's move around with the four face buttons, aim with analog and shoot with R and throw grenades with L. Put zoom, action and weapon change on the D-pad. You don't jump in Killzone anyway.

Count me in among the "I thought Killzone was nice" people. Good atmosphere, and since I'm bad at FPSs, I value atmosphere more than good AI.

Killzone was a great looking Xbox game shoehorned into a PS2.

As a result just about everthing suffered, but what it did it did well.

Those games were worked on by two different teams. The people that did the Purple Haze thing are in Australia I believe (unless I am confusing them with someone else, I always get Pandemic confused with Guerilla because of their gas mask logo, my mind is quite a simple machine really).
