EA working on new C&C Red Alert game

From the team that brought us Command & Conquer Generals. Official announcement due in the near future.

Electronic Arts has revealed that it's working on a new game in the Command & Conquer: Red Alert series in an email sent to fan site operators by VP and executive producer Mark Skaggs.

With the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth nearly upon us, Skaggs said the company wanted to start turning attention toward its next project, and that in an unusual twist - perhaps unprecedented for Electronic Arts - he was breaking the news to fans of the game ahead of the gaming press.

"We are very proud to announce that the team that brought you Command & Conquer Red Alert 2, Command & Conquer Yuri's Revenge, and Command & Conquer Generals has officially started work on our next project set in the Red Alert universe," he wrote.

Referring to the Sage graphics engine used for Generals, he added: "Expect us to leverage and continue to evolve this powerful engine as we start work on our new Command & Conquer game."

An EA UK representative we spoke to today declined to comment, citing the absence of an official announcement at the present time, but fortunately for you and them, Skaggs' email said to expect one "soon".

Bitt of a meaningless gesture since on the internet it'll take about 0.99999 milli seconds for the rest of the press to catch the story.

Hope they make it a real C&C game this time and give it a decent singleplayer campaign, unlike Generals.

Generals, Zero Hour, tBfME and now a new Red Alert. Quite a fast turnaround on all these titles. You'd almost think EA are working people to death over there.

Hopefully this won't be of the same quality as most of the other titles being produced by EA at the moment. Nice gesture though, telling the fans first.

Didnt they lay off all the westwood staff?

then again, the licence was the only thing of any worth - the AI programmer was bloody pathetic making the AI cheat on anything other than normal.

Cool. Here's hoping for the return of the appalling badly acting cut scenes.

I wouldn't hold your breath. They cost money to film.

Cant' say I'm looking forward to this game. That's despite me owning Red Alert, Counterstrike, and Red Alert 2, and loving them all.

I can't wait to use the Eye of Sauronski super-weapon...

I can't see this being anything other than 'meh' given EAs prevalence in tipping anything and everything into the rubbish heap of mediocrity.

    Don't you mean the "Eye-on Cannon"? ;)

I wouldn't hold your breath. They cost money to film.

EA spent tons of money on digitizing the faces and bodies of all the actors from the LotR films, motion-capturing their actions and having them record their voices for the games. And you're telling me they can't do the same for one of their most famous and influential gaming franchises?

Surely you must be joking. Then again, this is EA.

After reading all the various things in regard to the poor working conditions, I am keeping away from buying anything from them until I hear things have changed for the better.

C&C onliy works well with the Tiberian Sun/Red Alrt Engine. The 3D esqueness of Generals was pants

How can you cheat in Yuris Revenge online?
  • PinkSpider #14 7 years ago

Ive only seen three engines I like; The original Command and Conquer 2D engines, the Total Annihilation engine and the Warcraft 3 engine.

Frankly i hated Generals, the missions where boring and online I got lag (4 player game all of us on atleast 512 adsl). Took it back and got warcraft 3; best decision ever!

    RA 2 was fantastic.

    Generals was terrible.
  • Petrarch #17 7 years ago

The infantry models in Generals were absolutely terrible. Tanks and that were ok (for the most part) but the whole thing was ruined by the 5 polygon (if that) troopers.

Best thing they can do is either go back to the Red Alert 2 engine and use it, or, to keep it in 3D by throwing the Generals engine in the bin and using the Ground Control 2 one. Just look at the detail of infantry in that one.

    Hmm....

I like Red Alert 2, in fact it's one of my favourite titles. I seriously thought they'd be doing another C & C non-red-alert title by now though...

I thought that Generals was alright, but it seems that all the mags are hyping Act Of War: Direct Action as a true C&C beater

i agree with sysco apart from the comment on the voices. i turned the voices off in the generals game also in the red alert 2 game, becuase i just found it annoying. EA needs to scrap that resorce hogging engine and go back to the classic graphics that made C&C how popular it is today. who uses the rotating camera or the zoom function anyway? i dont. what i would like to see is the same graphics (with very little improvements from RA2), larger maps, and better AI. the AI is a problem westwood/EA have never seemed to have solved. in other words in RA2, Generals and TBFME the AI is thick! they attack in little numbers and leave almost nothing to defend their base with, only relying on structural defences (which in Generals and TBFME are too weak in my opinion). they attack directly at your base with no variation what so ever and so on and so on. for me in RTS games, graphics mean nothing to me, in fact RA2's graphics are good enough even today. its variation given to the player, and variation by the computer that makes a great RTS game.
