NHL '07 demo on Xbox 360 News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

7 September, 2006

There's a demo of NHL '07 up now on Xbox Live Marketplace, and it slaps in at 541.39MB - the kind of slap you might experience after a minor indiscretion involving a secretary.

According to the description, you can "select your favourite player from the Edmonton Oilers or Carolina Hurricanes and see if you have what it takes to score the momentum-swinging goal". So hard to choose!

NHL '07, out this month, features a new "Skill Stick" system that allows you to control everything with the analogue sticks, and EA's also put a lot of work into AI - with "Player-Specific Behaviours" allowing you to adopt a particular player-type, be it Dangler, Grinder, Playmaker, Sniper, Power Forward, Offensive Defenseman or Defensive Defenseman.

NHL '07 is due out on Xbox 360, PC, PS2, PSP and Xbox from September 22.

It's a single player demo and all you can play is a shootout i.e. you and the computer take turns trying to score a goal, three shots each. Bit rubbish really.

That sounds crap and pointless. But is the game any good? Not played an EA NHL game in years, largely due to the aceness of the 2K series and the lack of an NHL 06 on 360 last year.

I thought EA said the game was out on the 15th... ah well, whatever, I'm really looking forward to trying this game out as I have it on pre-order and I don't have much hope of Take 2's NHL 2K7 making these shores until next March/April!

It's a bit shit, isn't it?

As I suspected, the use of the right stick is extremely gimmicky and I can't see anyone actually using it to play the proper game.

Always been more of a 2K man myself, anyway.

Heh, I thought using the stick was pretty good tbh. It's not exactly rocket-science, but then it shouldn't be. Feels just as natural as using the right stick to swing the club in golf games.

But the demo sucks. I want to try it a bit more.

Probably just me being crap as usual, but I'm finding it really hard to score. I've played the shootout more than 15 times, and I've only scored twice, both were utter fluked off the keeper!!
