Halo 3 trailer making-of

Lots of sequel chatter.

"You won't just finish one fight - you'll finish all of the fights that you started in Halo 1." That's Bungie explaining what Halo 3's going to be like in a new video talking about the making of the game's E3 trailer - which you can check out on Eurogamer TV now, with high-definition downloadable versions available on Bungie's website.

The seven-minute film talks about how the E3 trailer "is the reveal of the big mystery that Halo and Halo 2 have been driving toward." Various staffers talk about the scene shown in the trailer and how it relates to the Forerunners, what's happening to Cortana, and how the team wanted to create something on this scale before but were up against the limits of technology.

"When you're working in high definition it's a very unforgiving environment," they say, going on to talk about the Master Chief's armour and its self-shadowing, texture work, real-time reflection and the scratches - "He has been through some tremendous battle and we're actually showing that on the Chief this time around."

"If people just show a pre-rendered movie there's always going to be speculation about well yeah sure your renderer's not going to be able to do that, and I think what we're trying to show firmly is that our engine can do this stuff that we say it's going to do and it's doing it now," said sound-man Jay Weinland.

"I think in the end you're absolutely going to play what you watch in this trailer."

Halo 3 is due out next year, or so everyone reckons.

Thought there was ment to be 7 "halos" this makes it sound like this is the final game. Am I missing something?!

How long before the making of the making of the trailer? I wouldn't put it past the MS PR machine...
  • NthSimulachum #3 6 years ago

Err. yes. They're not going to make a game for every ring. That would quickly become tiresome. "Hey chief, library, AGAIN"
  • towser #4 6 years ago

I thought the original plan was to indeed make 7 games?

I din't even like the 2nd one so gawd knows what this next one will turn out like :-(

    Is that a good thing?

How soon until the "I hate Halo" trolls start popping up? We get it already guys. You think Halo is over-rated. Whatever. The consumer hype that will precede the release of Halo 3 will tell you that many disagree. Now, take your negativity someplace else, where people actually give a damn (www.playstation.com?)

Well, I'm sure the Halo fan-boys will be more than ready with their torches and pitchforks...

I think it's a good thing... i've watched it loads of times and honestly think the graphics are pretty amazing, they look more "real" than most cgi i've seen and you can hardly see any jaggies or blatant flaws (apart from the stiffness of the plants which look a bit pants when the wind is blowing) that destroy the sense of realism. That's not to say they're the best graphics i've ever seen but if the final game is like this then i'll be very happy indeed.

    Yeah the library sucked!
  • albundy #11 6 years ago

    Twice. The Library sucked TWICE!

Still, two of the best games that I've ever played in my life.

Most Halo bashing is unsubstantiated dribble. You can't really argue that a game that's clocked up half a billion online games is a pile of crap. Yes, it wasn't perfect (what is?) but it was a damn good game.

    Roll on Halo 3....

I don't mean to get into the Halo debate (haven't even played any of them, not sure I ever will, so I'm not adressing this game specifically) but in general, surely we should know better than to equate sales numbers with game quality?
  • Snowy #14 6 years ago

Absolutley loved the first Halo (especially legendary co-op), but the second left me rather unsatisfied to be honest. I enjoyed the first for it's simplicity of plot (much like the original Star Wars films), but the plot detail of the second ruined it for me.

Anyway just when I think I'm over Halo, I watch that making of and I'm really excited again. I just NEED to see what they're going to do with it.

"surely we should know better than to equate sales numbers with game quality?"

Most intelligent comment I've seen on Eurogamer, well ever! :-)

But regarding my earlier remark (you're gonna play what you see in the trailer-comment), maybe I have to spell it out, but in the trailer almost nothing happens. I'm sure for Halo-nuts, it has all kinds of special and secret meanings but for a more or less neutral spectator, it's a very beautiful, very boring clip with soap opera style drama direction.

And I absolutely don't dispute that Halo 2 is the best console FPS when it comes to gameplay and multiplayer.

surely we should know better than to equate sales numbers with game quality?

And who's standards are you using? Surely, if something does sell quite a bit, then quite a bit of the market considers it to be a quality item. No one is stating that it's wrong or impossible to dislike Halo, but with as many sales as it has, it *is* considered to be of good quality by many.

And likewise, disliking something that is enjoyed by the masses isn't indicative of having better taste or better standards, either.

    True, it works both ways.

Hurrah for the most sensible Halo comments section ever! :D

I really like the games, but I can see how people might not like the 2nd in SP, but I don't know many people who think the MP isn't pretty sweet :)

Actually, the amount of time people spend playing Halo online should be seen more of an endorsement for it then how many copies it sold.

Games can sell a million plus, but if it's crap then it'll soon be relegated to the shelf. Halo 2 is still the most popular game on Xbox Live, and that's some going 18 months after launch. So many people wouldn't be playing it still if it was cacka-poo-poo.

(I actually am not an online gamer myself but accept the fact that many are and enjoy it as such).
