Pro Evo 5 for PSP

DS version in doubt.

Following the appearance of Pro Evolution Soccer 5 for PSP on a release schedule issued by Atari Australia, which publishes the PES games over there, Konami has confirmed to Eurogamer that the series is indeed going portable.

But only on Sony's handheld, apparently - there are no plans to produce a version for the Nintendo DS at present.

Which seems a little odd, since Winning Eleven was on a list of DS games in development released by Nintendo last summer. Hmm...

Konami producer Shingo "Seabass" Takatsuka discussed PES for PSP back in October, also revealing that PlayStation 2 owners may be able to go online with the fifth instalment in the series.

This has yet to be confirmed, as does a release date for PES5. However, Play.com is already taking pre-orders, suggesting it'll be marching onto the pitch come October 28. PES games are traditionally released around this time, so it seems like a reasonable estimate.

In other PES news, Konami has signed England and Chelsea defender John Terry to promote the series.

"I've been a massive fan of Pro Evolution Soccer for years now and am really pleased to be able to work with the talented people behind such a fantastic game," said Terry, clutching his bag of shiny new pound coins.

"It's the game of choice for lots of players as it is so true to the real thing. I'm looking forward to getting involved - and getting to play advance versions on the way!" Jolly good.

More on PES5 as soon as we get it.

Probably the only case where a celebrity endorsement is honest (although George Forman does seem quite enthusiastic about his grill). Terry is famous for being the organiser or epic PES tournaments in the Chelsea camp. Bastards, I bet they've got 20 HDTV's set up in some unbelievable luxury playing lounge....

I can't imagine stuff like Pro Evo selling on DS, the very idea... it's like a square peg for a round hole
  • Tomo #3 7 years ago

    That's a pretty harsh statement ^^^

If they could think of some ingenious control system with the stylus it would rock.
  • JHuxley #4 7 years ago

Tomo - like tapping the screen to pass, drawing a line to shoot? Think I'll stick to the d-pad thanks. But I don't see any reason why this couldn't be released on the DS, if in a reduced capacity.

    PSP sold!

Well I was going to get one anyway but now its a no brainer. Whether I import or not is however still open and depends on when I get the money.

It's a good your not employed to design games, we'll leave this to the experts I think.
  • kdsh7 #9 7 years ago

Oh come on. What's the worst thing about Pro Evo? The interface - all those buttons, charts..etc. Move those onto the second screen, use the touch screen to directly select players and positions in menus, and to covertly change tactics - and there you have the perfect football game. I've been waiting for this game on DS and I don't want to have to fork out £179.99 (argh!) on a PSP where the emphasis will purely be to replicate the PS2 version.

^ what about that lame pac pix thing or whatever it is.

Talk about solutions looking for problems!
  • JHuxley #11 7 years ago

Smiggs...the same experts that made Ridge Racer DS or Spider Man 2? Can't wait.
  • Derblington #12 7 years ago

Think about free kicks on the DS though. You could circle the area to shoot into, touch the part of the ball to kick for spin, etc. It could be good.
  • Sid-Nice #13 7 years ago

Pro Evolution 5 may be in doubt, but what about Winning Eleven 8 for the DS? That's in development, I'll not bother leaving a link, as in two or three days there'll be an article titled " PES 5 For The DS " Eurogamer first with the news again.
  • Aretak #14 7 years ago

Winning Eleven has been announced for the DS. PES hasn't. Remember that there's a WE game on the GameCube in Japan, but it was never intended to be released here.
  • IronGiant #15 7 years ago

Su'fukkin'perb.. this game is a system seller for the UK at least. As for saying it'll just be the PS2 version that's exactly what i want on my PSP, the game is pure class as it is and Wi-Fi is gonna rock!! :)
  • Feanor #16 7 years ago

Pro Evo 5 on the PSP is going to be interesting given how Pro Evo likes to use every button on the Dual Shock and the right analog stick.
  • kincaide #17 7 years ago

    *sniff*

I remember the days when WE/PES (or ISS Pro Evo as it was then) was endorsed by the one and only Carlos Valderrama

    " That's a pretty harsh statement ^^^ "

Sorry, I should have elaborated. I just mean it doesn't seem like the kind of game that Nintendo made the DS for. The kinds of games they're getting people to make, that people are making for it... they just seem to be aimed at the type of consumer that isn't attracted to PES.
  • Natius #19 7 years ago

Yaaay, a dumbed down version of PES, how exciting :)

No reason PES can work on PSP and not DS. Appart from the PSP not having a touch screen, both systems have the same amount of buttons.

yay! yet another cut down version of a game i'll already be playing on the ps2! Yipppeee!

"what about that lame pac pix thing or whatever it is"

It's called "doing something different"... You wouldnt understand...

but i agree.. you dont HAVE to use the touch screen just because it's there.. but for player formations, etc etc it'll be ace!
  • Burton2000 #22 7 years ago

yeah its a shame winning eleven never came to cubes in europe as it may of bin the first footie game i wud of bort

Reading this thread, it seems amazing people were able to make football games before we had dual analogue sticks and a 8+ buttons on our joypads.
  • laur #24 7 years ago

You don't actually have to use the right analogue stick, and same with the R2 and L2 buttons. I think the PSP is perectly suited for PES, controlwise, as the 'nub' really has its chance to shine. That way you could use the d-pad for skill moves if you like to showboat...
  • wolfen #25 7 years ago

The only recent version of PES I've found truly enjoyable was WE Advance. As it only had four buttons for all actions, it didn't required a near encyclopedic memory to know how to make a lobbed 1-2, and still managed to look and play very realistically.

"Reading this thread, it seems amazing people were able to make football games before we had dual analogue sticks and a 8+ buttons on our joypads."
    Indeed.

I've got Winning Eleven 6 for the Cube and I bought a Panasonic Q to play it, I can't be bothered with these Freeloader things. It's an improved version of PES 2. When playing PES 4 I can see where Konami have improved things. As for the DS, ISS 64 would do for me. :)
  • RobTheBuilder #27 7 years ago

Oh good, 5 minutes loading time before every match just to get some shinier graphics. Whoopfuckingpee.

Twat. You're not interested in this then fine, why even bother typing such a pathetic comment. Maybe just maybe PSP owners are excited at the prospect of a handheld wi-fi multiplayer version of the best footy games ever made. Maybe just maybe the thought of PS2 quality visuals is a bonus. Then you wouldn't see that through your Nintendo fanboi glasses, of course if this story had been about a DS version you'd be all over it.

"Also Irongiant, calm down, if anyone ever says anything
against the PSP you go off on one, RobTheBuilder, has a
valid point, even though not expressed in the most
    diplomatic ways."

Don't talk rubbish, im perfectly calm.. i just find it hilarious how anyone can try to turn a PSP release of PES into something negative. What valid point, has he played the game already then?

"Though I might tempt myself into getting the DS
version on the promise of it actually being different to
    it's counterparts:)"

This is exactly why i've always said the DS and PSP can happily co-exist, what i want is a PSP version of the PS2 game, i don't want something different as you say.. the game is spot on as it is IMO.

I wasnt turning the PSP release into something negative, I was angry at the fact that yet again shiny graphics go before innovation. The new one comes out on PSP while DS gets a rejigged old version as if it doesnt matter.

Im happy for co-existence but thats never the way it seems to be, its always one gets the better deal.

Im not completely anti PSP, I want one for several games; im just pissed off at how Nintendo gamers get treated as unimportant by so many developers, even when their system has sold millions more units so far!
  • Natius #32 7 years ago

So basically its gonna be Fifa in PES garb then right?

Hmmmm i see your frustration but think you're a bit off the mark, surely Konami are hedging their bets as to which system will be owned by the most footy/PES fans. I'd guess that system is the PSP by a long way, regardless of how many units the DS has sold. Nintendo are trying to get non gamers into gaming, the DS has excelled at that very thing, you can't tell me that a bigger percentage of DS gamers are big footy fans than PSP owners. You want innovation get a DS, you want conversions of huge selling current gen console games get a PSP. You want a bit of both then get both!

Pro Evolution Soccer 5 on PS2 will be definitely online, it'll go into online PS2 beta testing after Konami's 'The Regiment' game. :D
