Weekend of Defeat: Free

Try DoD: Source before buying.

Those of you unwilling to pay $19.95 to join The Third Reich (or those pesky Allies) are being invited to try Day of Defeat: Source for free this weekend.

Valve's keen to get more people playing its World War II Half-Life mod remake, and thus will be allowing people to pre-load the game this week and then play it from noon Friday all the way through till Sunday to get a feel.

After that it's back to the pay model, which gives you full access to DoD: Source through Steam for $19.95 or allows you to pick it up as part of more expensive premium bundles for Half-Life 2 and friends.

It's a good weekend to play DoD: Source then, although one might question the wisdom of Valve's plan given that it launches a sub-15-quid boxed copy in the UK at the same time, distributed through EA.

Out on Friday, it's the boxed version of what you're being encouraged to play for free. Good news from the "try before you buy" front, then, to which reinforcements are likely to flock/brings fresh new meaning to "You'll pay!" taunts etc.

This is a great deal, I hope we see more online games offered for free weekends and the like. There's a big difference between reading a review of a single-player game and deciding whether it's your sort of thing and putting money down for a multiplayer game that might be full of idiot kids that ruin everyone's fun.

    DoD:S however, is great.

Aye - it is a very good idea. I never stump up for multiplayer games unless I liked the demo or have tried it at a mate's or something.

DoD original is still alot more fun and engaging to play than the Source version...the original still has bags more atmosphere......

I loved the original DoD, but since the Source engine Bl#ws (at least on Nvidia cards) I have little hope for this.

I'll defenitly give it a try this weekend, but something tells me this is just going to send me back to DoD(1)

i have never played the original DoD but the Source version is bloody fantastic with a couple of mates and teamspeak/xfire voice.

Source version is shite, I wish I'd not bothered with it, the original was great.

I personally enjoy the source version, and I enjoyed the original too. Well worth the $20 IMO.

To smoison, how exactly does the Source engine blow on Nvidia cards? I have a GeForce Ti 4600 for god's sake and the source engine still looks quite nice. On my flatmate's 6800 it's even nicer and that's not even top of the range anymore.
