SSX Blur unveiled for Wii News

Wii News by Tom Bramwell

6 December, 2006

EA has officially unveiled its SSX game for Nintendo Wii, five months after we first heard about it.

Called SSX Blur, it's exclusive to the new Nintendo console (although that's not to say the series is exclusive), and in development at EA Montreal for release in North American and Europe during March.

Controls will be based on your motions rather than specific button combinations by the sound of it (possibly "and/or").

Producer Alex Hyder said it was the team's goal to, er, "Wii-ify" the "soul of the franchise - the air, the speed, the tricks, the fun".

"You're going to see that reflected in the On-the-Ground and In-the-Air controls, the characters, the user interface, and every other aspect of this game," he added.

The sequel, SSX Oasis, will involve drinking lots of lager in the chalet and collapsing into a pile of your own vomit.

This is one part of Nintendo's plan that they'd benefit greatly, exclusives by default.

Wether those exclusives will be worth it *cough* Red Steel *cough* remains to be seen.

I predict the next Tony Hawks game will require strapping a wii remote to each foot for full on trick doing action, and will cause 3.4 fatalities a day.

SSX.. never was any good imo

We always knew it was going to be how devs use the technology in the game that will make the Wii work SSX should be very interesting to play in a different way though I rekon you can expect some more flying wiimote stories! haha.

I for one cant wait to see what comes up for the Wii there is going to be some amazing stuff in the second wave of games for sure. Once dev crews get their heads round the freedom and possibilities.

Screw SSX, bring on 1080. I love that game. Kept playing the GC version for a very, very long time and plan to do so again once my Wii arrives. (I am too lazy to hook up my GC again).

I think Red Steel has potential if they continue the series - remember sometimes sequels are better than the original - case in point - compare Street Fighter to Street Fighter 2 ;).

Prince of Persia 2 was flawed but the 3rd one was good.

Absolutely loved SSX Tricky, found SSX 3 huge expansive and entertaining, SSX on Tour was where the typical EA rot coming in... but EA are taking the piss with Nintendo trying to get outside of the kiddy image and all.

Does the Blur suffix relate to the fact that the Wii is not HD?

How do you even say "Wii-fy"? Is it like wee-fi? Wee-i-fy? Weefy? Some clarification, please.

How come everyone's so negative? I thought it looked very nice, and I also believe "big heads" are way cuter and more fun than the usual "14 year old cool" stuff EA use to do.

Also, love the motion blur. Seems the Wii can do some nice effects if it's asked to.

This reminds me of just how fantastic SSX really is when it's sleek and sexy. On Tour was a real disservice to its otherwise classy Wipeout like streamlinedness. Grungey and weird is great, but not when you apply it to something that already has a style.

In fairness to EA (wow, that wasn't easy) they did nail Madden 07 at the first attempt for the Wii, and made it into the best version on any platform despite the inferior graphics. From what I've seen of it (video reviews etc) it's incredibly detailed and responsive.

Maybe they've turned a corner...probably not though.
