Resistance to be patched

Programmer explains changes.

Those of you playing Resistance: Fall of Man online in the UK (hi Rob) will be pleased to hear that Insomniac's working on a patch to spruce up a few things.

This from the developer's lead multiplayer programmer Eric Ellis, whose latest blog post (down at the moment?) offers some insight:

"I can't yet talk about all the things we've changed, but I really think that people will be very pleased to see how responsive this is to some concerns that have come out since we went live," he writes.

"We've addressed a few key balance issues and put a big focus on making it possible to more effectively use a variety of strategic and team-based tactics in the game. I'm very excited to see how people like the change when it releases. That should happen very soon, so stay tuned."

Resistance: Fall of Man is due out alongside the PlayStation 3 in Europe next March, although there's no word on whether that version will be patched up prior to release.

Patches and consoles should not mix.
  • Steroyd #7 6 years ago

Havn't you heard SeesThroughAll the PS3 is a computer not a games console.

With that said WTF is the Xbox 360 then?

Why Not? What is going to happen? Russian spies going to come round and poison you?

Or is it just early-onset dementia and he's forgotten?

Ok then how would you test a game using 100,000 people prior to release? Tweaks will always be required to online games.

Companies are starting to get around this by creating multiplayer betas which will ease the problem but you'll still need patches.

What is all this down with patches nonsese? Would you rather they simply didn't make improvements once the game was on the shelves?
  • Pike #13 6 years ago

Didn't you get the memo, kangarootoo?

Before consoles allowed online play developers never released unfinished or shoddy console games, duh.

I would rather have games released finished to begin with, and not requiring any improvements, as you call it.

On a PC, I can understand the need for patches, given the tremendous subtleties of hardware support. PC is very different. But on consoles, you have fixed, unique, specs. I'm not sure about the idea of the PS3 becoming a PC even more than the 360.

Played this yesterday on a PS3 in Computer Exchange.

    Extremely underwhelming.

Average graphics, bland design and really missed the rumble on Sixaxis.

Certainly not a patch (geddit) on Gears of War.

    Own it.

Don't listen to the haters. This game is georgeous and only gets better as the game goes on.

    Nice and hard too.

    Loving this.

"I would rather have games released finished to begin with, and not requiring any improvements, as you call it."

Me too, but realistically being able to apply updates does allow improvements to be made that would otherwise not be possible. Its not a black and white line, either "game is perfect and can be shipped" or "game is bug ridden and cannot be shipped". Quite often a game will be of a perfectly acceptable quality when shipped, but that doesn't mean that nothing more can be improved. Truth is, something can always be improved ad infinitum, so why not take the improvements.

Despite what people suggest, the submission processes of MS, Sony and Nintendo do not allow bugs to pass on the basis that they can be "patched later". Either something passes as is, or it doesn't. Allowing patches to be cut afterwards won't change that.

This patch is for multiplayer - not single player. In fact I'd be surprised if anyone could name a game on the 360 or PS3 who's single player element has been patched.

It's nearly always the multiplayer side which needs a patch once they have data from the hundreds of thousands of players who play it, in order to improve performance and stop cheating etc.
  • JediMasterMalik #19 6 years ago

There's nothing "wrong" with the game itself, these aren't bugs and glitches which are being fixed. They are more like updates to the experience, balancing, maybe some extra features etc.

    Oblivion?

I would kinda expect this sort of thing ("key";) to be done before release.

    For a console game anyway.

    Oh, launch title. Right.

Well not on 360 so far, but Ninja Gaiden added a new camera to the single player in a download.

    @Canadian_Mike

If you own this, then you know it's not much cop. Plays like call of duty with better weapons. Isn't that hard either as the slowdown on the sniper makes killing stuff stupidly easy (even those metal head blokes).

Yep I've played this through to the crappy "Were they aliens or russian science gone wrong" ending.

This is an average fps with bland environments and weapons that are so unbalanced that multiplayer is complete bollocks. You can effectively have 40 people shooting through walls at each other sitting behind shields for the duration of a match. Yep the only thing this games multiplayer has going for it was that 40 people at a time number. In practice its as enjoyable as strapping lead weights to your ankles and jumping into the sea i.e. not very!

Patch it all you like guys, games crap anyway.

    @Xiphos

Christ, who shit in your kettle?

That rant had nothing to do with patches, and the 3rd from last "sentence" didn't even make any sense. Did you just get divorced this morning or something?
  • frankthurk #26 6 years ago

    Actually, it is good.
