Gears of War getting sequel?

Epic makes some noises.

Cliff Bleszinski and Mike Capps from Epic Games have dropped a few hints about a sequel to Gears of War.

"We've spent time developing a rich universe for Gears, and the story is absolutely larger than the one told in the game," company president Capps told CVG.

"One could even argue that the ending cinematic leaves room for a sequel". Although obviously there are no specific plans yet.

"Wait for the gamers out there to play through the game before coming to any conclusions about future products," Bleszinski added, mysteriously.

"I love the universe and everything involved in it and if the game does amazingly well I wouldn't rule anything out!"

Judging by the amount of pre-release hype and the likely first-day sales, we doubt most people would rule it out.

Watch out for our review of Gears of War tomorrow afternoon.

    Stating the obvious of course.

this will probably become a halo rival with sequels, books and films I can just see it now.....The Rock in Gears Of War.......what a movie

"If our game sells well, we will make a sequel."

I love the implied "Of course our game is good enough to warrant a sequel" thing going on there.
  • asphaltcowboy #4 6 years ago

No, CliffyB said he didn't want to jinx it by suggesting there might be a sequel. "If the game sells well and people like it, we'll do a sequel." Sounds fairly genuine to me.
  • NthSimulachum #5 6 years ago

Ooh they could make an RTS!

    Gears of War Wars!

Implying of which, I really hope they change the name of that certain Halo-based RTS. It sucks, and doesn't make sense in the context of the story.

"We will now fight the Covenant! But not on Halo, since we have not discovered them yet!"

  • Steroyd #6 6 years ago

doesn't that warrant true for any new game...

although that line wrings true to EA as well...

    @Sofalover

So you're not going to buy it, even if everyone says its brilliant?

"One could even argue that the ending cinematic leaves room for a sequel".

My Halo 2-ometer has just shot up to 11. :)
  • Xerx3s #12 6 years ago

An ending that has most ppl trash their tv because they want to finish the story is the best cliffhanger evA. ;)
  • El_MUERkO #13 6 years ago

    cliffhanger ending a-la Halo 2

"Cliff Bleszinski (Creator of 'Gears of War') was found stabbed to death in the trunk of a car last night, police suspect a french terrorist Le Dilettante may have been involved, his organisation HATELO denie any involvement in the crime."
  • sanctusmortis #14 6 years ago

Hey, if Prey might get a sequel despite being, IMHO, total pap, I see no reason a game that looks to be any good shouldn't at least be considered for one.

Hopefully, Dead Rising gets a follow up. I want more zombie bashing!
  • Rirekon #15 6 years ago

"Publishers dont want Developers to create one-off games, they want Developers to create franchises that can spawn off sequels, downloadable content, tv-series, toys, rubbish minigame collection games."

And why are reviews coming out next week? Does that mean you've had sufficient time to play it online?

Either way, it has to be better than PDZ.
  • krudster #19 6 years ago

Review is going up tomorrow at 5pm. We've not played it online, but have had sufficient hands-on with the multiplayer modes offline and at the various system linked events.

I thought Gears of War was made up of three games?
  • captainrentboy #21 6 years ago

Come on guys, what's the prediction for the EG review?I'm going to say an 8,the problems being it's too short, not original enough, and possibly too gung-ho!
If any EG staff are reading, are you going to be posting a lot of pics with the review that we wouldn't have seen before?I personally don't want any surprise scenarios or environments spoiled see.
  • EmiliasHorse #22 6 years ago

I just hope its good enough to warrant a sequel. From what I have seen so far it looks certain.

RB6, Call of Duty 3, Viva Pinata and GOW (So glad Forza was delayed)

Looks like the family is getting sod all again this xmas
  • stoopidgreg #23 6 years ago

did anyone really think they wouldn't milk such a pre-launch-success franchise?

    oh, and i predict a 9/10 review

    This doesn't make sense.

    Uh-oh.

You DO know you don't have to release the reaview along with everyone else? Wouldn't it be best to hold back and have some more time to play it online?

If this is a short game, then I hope it's marked down for that.

I don't want to play for 5 hours at what will amount to 10 quid an hour! Heck most people don't get paid that at their day jobs.

I also want to play something that has variety. If I spend the mission on foot or worse still, being ferried about in an on rails vehicle, then I'm knocking points off for that too. I've wasted far too much money on games that reviewers have whooped and hollered about only to find them short and boring after a few hours of actual play. makes me wonder if some reviewers even do play the games or if they just go with the hype.

    Review??

A ten day early review of the PAL version? Or a review of the US one? Also when is the FEAR review due?

    must be a US review

@MikeJones: Epic have said (almost) explicitly said that the game won't be coming out on anything other than 360... and (in the unlikely event it does... it won't be for AGES!)

@penhalion: Epic have also said it's around 12 hours of game time at least...

    I hope so anyway!
  • captainrentboy #33 6 years ago

I doubt veeeery much the game lasts 5 frikkin hours, that would be obscenely short.Ten or more and I'm happy, due to work and girlfriend duties I never get to play on a game for more than 2 hours a day anyway. And the multi player sounds bloody awesome as a back up once single player's done,so i'm not too bothered.Basically as long as it's thoroughly entertaining throughout it's allll good!
  • Royal Fool #34 6 years ago

    I predict a 7/10.

I have to be honest and say that so far no new FPS games have come close to the feeling of going through Halo 1. Even Halo 2 fell way short (and I'm not holding my breath for Halo 3 given the general end of the world/dead master chief and cortana vibe).

If this is engaging for say 20 hours of single player (my benchmark game length) then I'll be happy. Anything shorter and I start looking for the trade in price even before the wrapper is off.

So will you be doing a post review item on the online multiplayer considering that that's what the game is basically about?

Oh and I predict a 7. A 6 even if rauper is grumpy tomorrow morning. ;)
  • erp #37 6 years ago

something really narks me whenever there's talk of a sequel to a game before the original is even out yet.
  • Psychotext #38 6 years ago

I reckon a 7, but only because it's been hyped to hell and back. I'd like to see it get more as I want it to be as great as it sounds! =)

Er.. but you do realize playing multiplayer offline or by system link is a vastly different experience, right? I for one find it much more fun to play a multiplayer game at, say, a LAN-party or even just split-screen with a few mates. Although, I suppose the friends-list on live might alleviate the problem of rampant teenage 'tards for some users..
