Super Smash Bros. details

Sakurai spills the beans.

Those excited by the prospect of forthcoming Wii title Super Smash Bros. may already know that the game's creator, Masahiro Sakurai, likes to keep everyone informed about how it's coming along via his blog.

Problem is, it's all in Japanese - but the good news is that a fan has been hard at work translating the info into English, as reported by 1up.

Hence we now know that a Fire Emblem character could make an appearance in the game, along with Mario, Link and Solid Snake. As previously announced, you'll be able to play the game online, but it'll all be pretty simple stuff - there won't be any leaderboards, for example.

In fact, the game itself is also designed to be quite simple, in that players new to the series should be able to pick up and play with ease. Sakurai has also said that a DS version could turn up at some point, although there isn't one in development just yet.

Head on over to the Smashboards forum to read all the details.

whats the history here with Nintendo being allowed to use the Solid Snake character still? I recall MG was on the NES (I think!) but I would have thought the licensing would now cause problems?

I suppose MGS was on the GC wasn;t it.. so maybethey have some form of deal there.

They ask Konami if they can use the character, Konami say yes and provide them with a licence. I don't think it's any more complicated than that.

Actually, that's not what happened. Kojima personally requested for Snake to be included on SSB Melee on the Gamecube, and although he was accepted, they ran out of development time. He was a higher priotity this time around.

About the new info.. only 1-2 more licensed characters? I've lost all hope of Sonic being in there now.

It was a deal between Kojima and Mayamoto rather than Konami and Nintendo IIRC. Kojima asked for Snake to be in Melee, but it was too late to add him in at the time. Mayamoto came back to Kojima when they decided to make Brawl, and did a deal from there.

If you were thinking about if Sony could have a say about it, then the answer is no. Sony don't have any rights to any Metal Gear characters.

I think we got the clue when MGS2 substance got ported to the Xbox, and the Gamecube got a re-make of MGS1 (which was an alright re-make mind you).

Agreed. Infact, it would probably be the best game on the DS!

Oh I knew that Smash Bros. wassiname and MGS blokey are great great friends and this is how it all came about, but when it comes to the actual intellectual rights of these things lads........ then Nintendo would have needed to get an official licence from Konami. Regardless of how chummy their respective lead developers are........ no-one can just lend another company the intellectual property of another. Konami own Snake, Mayamoto doesn't.

This game is going to be fucking awesome. Only thing that could make it better WOULD be a DS version to go with it fellas.

    Can't wait.

Or a DS version that shares content with the Wii version. Save me unlocking everything twice!
  • NegativeZero #19 6 years ago

Still hoping they'll stick Sonic in.

Considering Nintendo have been loaning out their characters for a while, I'm glad it's begining to pay off!

Rare took on Fox, in Starfox Adventures. Rare had the rights to Donkey Knog for ages, before they gave them back to work under the evil empire, Darth Gates. Namco took Link to Soul Calibur. Heck, what'd be really cool, is if they got some other characters in like Cloud or Squall from Square-Enix, Sonic from Sega, Conker from Rare (although that one's never gonna happen), Mega Man from Capcom, Snake from Konami... ...oh, wait...

Personally, I thought Smash Bros controls were very simple anyway. I mean, it's two attack buttons, the directional buttons and shield and throw. How can they simplify that?

...What do you think of Yoda from LucasArts? Lol.
