Nintendo dismisses rumour that new Zelda will use Rev controller

It's 'pure speculation', apparently.

Nintendo has dismissed claims that long awaited GameCube title The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be playable on the Revolution using the wacky old "freestyle" controller.

NGC magazine was responsible for starting the rumours with an article which read: "Twilight Princess will be playable on the forthcoming Revolution using the upcoming console's unique controller.

"When you insert the disc into your Revolution, you'll be given the option to use the Revolution's controller, with all the advantages this will bring."

But that's not the case, Nintendo told Eurogamer: "The article in the January edition of NGC Magazine is pure speculation.

"Nintendo have made no new announcements regarding The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. We can however confirm that the game is still in development and that it will launch on Nintendo GameCube in 2006."

So, a bit of wishful thinking there, according to Nintendo. But maybe there will turn out to be a grain of truth in the speculation eventually, you never know...

    YES

That means the delay was spent on extra content and/or gameplay tweaking. I'm hoping for both.

Is it just me, or is it really that Ninty seem to be denying everything these days?
  • Ignatius_Cheese #3 6 years ago

Ninty would probably deny that they are denying everything...

Well that narrows that realease date down then!

It's a good job the Revolution will play GameCube games otherwise there'd be no point in releasing the game! By the time it finally comes out very few people will even remember what a GameCube is and fewer will own the machine!!! In fact, Nintendo might as well make it a Revolution launch title and not bother releasing it on the GC at all... it might actually sell better that way!

Has anybody else noticed the recent lack of Gamecube hardware and software in most games shops?

Its a bit sad to see my favourite machine having such a poor showing at the shops I visit to purchase software.

However, it is nice to see some places selling discounted hardware - got a brand new mario kart gamecube bundle at the start of the week for £40. Not bad deal at all.

Notice that he didn't actually DENY the rumour, just said that Nintendo have made no new announcements.

How much more life has the Cube got in it? If Twilight Princess isn't released in Feburary as was originally quoted will the Cube still be around by then. If retail is anything to go by the Cube will not last in the UK until June/July.

Nintendo's official reponse: No we don't.
  • Blerk #13 6 years ago

Mario 128's not coming to the Cube no more, Razzo.
  • Nikanoru #14 6 years ago

But then, can you think of any exclusives worth getting on the original Xbox in 2006, off the top of your head?

Aside from one or two swansongs not even the PS2 has a lot coming anymore in terms of exclusive stuff. But of course, the Cube gets all the whining.

Darren, don't you realise that by releasing it on the 'Cube, Nintendo essentially has double the target audience. You have the people with the GameCube as their second console, who can still play such a game, but may not want the Revolution. Then you have the Ninty fans, who have a GC and will buy a Revolution, which may not matter much to them which format it is released on; but then you have the Ninty fans who don't want a Revolution, so here it actually counts. And then you have the new Nintendo console adopters, who will only just be buying the Rveolution, their first Nintendo home console.

Releasing it on the 'Cube will not lose them money, but make more of it.

or... in other words, shut your pie hole.

Im sure nintendo will release it on revolution with all the benefit the new controller might give. However, they dont want people to know that in order to stop them from waiting for the Rev release instead.

As a new zelda game on the release date would be a killer move, which Im confident Nintendo is aware of, unless they are complete idiots.

Am i the only one who thinks it's quite obvious what Nintendo will, or must, do? They lost big by not releasing TP during the holidays... especially considering all the good buzz the DS was generating with the shopping masses. And i refuse to believe Nintendo just couldn't finish the game on time. They've been working on it forever!!

So, the only logical reason for the delay? Revolution will launch with Mario 128 and backwards compatible Zelda concurrently, duh. Bring it on, Kameo. Nintendo should have learned with the ass-kicking the Cube got that they NEED to launch with a better than average game lineup to make up for their inferior tech "wow" factor that, like it or not, the target demographic eats up. With that in mind, tell me who wouldnt be interested in a simultaneous Mario and Zelda release... with the new fangled controller no less. PSwho?

Zelda will also be marketed as the swansong title for the Cube too so as not to piss off what's left of the loyalists, who have been left holding their wank since RE4 back last January... (Mario Strikers was better back when it was Sega Soccer Slam) Hopefully, Nintendo will keep TP as a "multi cube disc epic" instead of releasing a seperate version on Rev DVDs (boooring). It will also help show off the cool GC disc slot loading feature of the Rev too, and anything that looks like it belongs on Star Trek is a plus with that target demographic mentioned above. But then im getting ahead of myself...

Heck, while i'm at it, i'm predicting the new DS-SP to come no sooner than Christmas in North America, maybe a bit sooner in Japan. (And Europe you know you're screwed...) They still havent released the white and black DS's outside Asia, and we all know those things will sell like hotcakes. No way Nintendo doesnt milk that. Probably drop around the same time as the Revolution... world domination you say, pinky? The PSP is no threat anyways since their sales figures are deceptive. They make no money selling PSPs! It doesnt matter how many units sold when Sony sells them at cost (maybe even a loss). And they dont sell any games!! PSP is great, but only for the "freeware" stuff. Hows that for irony, Sony.
  • drasfs #20 6 years ago

I dont think it will be called mario 128 though. Rumours say that you can switch between a 3d and 2d world, and then you will have freak experience if you combine it with the rev controller. One could conjure many great puzzles given thouse premises.

Im a bit dissapointed though that TP will be released on both, which means, even if it is a launch game, it wont take the full benefit of the new hardware.
  • Teeth #21 6 years ago

Yeah, I'd love it if they delayed the game further to produce an entirely new set of assets and code to take advantage of the new hardware :)
  • drasfs #22 6 years ago

Or a totally new on available on the launch day, but still releasing the updated GC version that no one that only wants to buy one game on the launch day would buy.
  • Galvanizer #23 6 years ago

    " YES

Agreed. I want the game to be perfected on GameCube. They can make another Zelda that uses Revo features. However, there is no denying that Zelda: TP using Revo features will help shift more Revo's.
  • groundbeef #24 6 years ago

Im convinced GC Zelda was done back in December. All this extra time is for Revo enhancements. I guess i should have been more clear about what i meant with "backwards compatible." There's actually not a whole lot needed to make it work (well enough). Nintendo already have most the needed mechanics down from tech demos, and that's like 90% right there. Sideways flick motion for sword / boomerang, up-down flick for fishing / bombs / hammer, point-n-shoot for arrows / grappling hook. All thats really needed is something fun for the horseback riding, and you're set. It would be a fun and different enough experience already to sell the game. I wouldnt hold my breath for something elaborate like free-form sword fighting etc.

The other thing i expect them to be working on is some sort of backwards visual upgrade through hardware filters a la Xbox. This displacement mapping tech thats being talked about sounds interesting...

And i was hoping that all this extra Revo code gets stuffed onto the Cube discs as well, instead of two seperate versions. Im hoping as a side result this will allow them to be less stingy with the CGs and audio compression as they normally do on the Cube. Make it like 4~6 discs, and just mass print those babies instead of a lame "core" cube version then "enhanced" revo version.

(WARNING! Zelda fanboy incoming! Take cover!)

I'd like to see it on the Gamecube. But regardless, I'll buy it whatever happens.

(Wow... that was remarkably simple to say...)
