Burning Crusade special edition

Collector's box with extras.

Blizzard has announced plans to release a special Collector's Edition of World of Warcraft expansion The Burning Crusade when the game goes on sale this winter.

A handsome beast, it'll include a copy of Burning Crusade, obviously, on both CD and DVD, as well as a host of extras. Of most interest from a gameplay perspective is the exclusive in-game pet, the "netherwhelp" - offspring of the nether drake flying mount.

There's lots more in the box though, including a hardcover art-book, soundtrack CD, and a behind-the-scenes DVD cataloguing the game's development through two hours of interviews and commentary. The disc also features footage of panel discussions at last year's inaugural BlizzCon.

Not content with that, Blizzard's also throwing in a Map of Outland mouse mat, and two starter packs for the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, as well as three exclusive "tournament-legal" cards to use in building a deck.

There's no word on how much the Collector's Edition's likely to cost, but we can probably expect it to be in line with the pricing for the original Collector's Edition, which went for US$ 79.99.

Hmm. The mousepad and art book are tempting, but I'll end up binning them next time I have a household rubbish purge. And the pet is really only going to impress a newbie. Think I'll pass and save myself some money.

There is no way they would price the new one the same as the last...it's not even a full game!

One thing that I don't get is that there was a lot of Burning Crusade (Outland, to be precise) art to be found in the WoW CE artbook.

So, what would they put in this one?

That box looks nothing like the Lord of the Rings special edition box. Amazing.

I think I'll wait for the Guild Wars Nightfall Collector's Edition, more useful stuff in that one

The original WoW Collector's Edition was that rare thing - a special edition which felt genuinely special. I have to admit i'm tempted even though i never really got into the game as much as some people i know (although actually getting these CE's is more down to luck than anything as they're rare and snapped up quick).

And since when did anything which looks like a leather-bound book become a LotR rip-off? If that's the case then there were LotR rip-off's for centuries before LotR was even written... Added to which, i might point out that if it's made as well as the original WoW CE was, then it actually manages to look far more impressive than my rather expensive leather-bound US import LotR trilogy book - nevermind the DVD CE's. When even people who don't like videogames are fawning over a CE of a game, you know it's something a bit more special than the usual.

Never saw the attraction of special edition sets, myself. Game's a game, why worry about the package it comes in?

Saw several people in the forum cheering because they bought Dead Rising *in a tin*. A week later they announce they didn't like the game after all. Still, at least it'll survive minor bomb damage.

Sticking a game in a "tin" and calling it special edition is laughable. Only saving grace is they don't charge anything extra for the tin, that really would be taking the piss. Talking of taking the piss, that's exactly what MS are doing with the GoW special edition release. 60 quid for a making of DVD (yawn) and a book (which hit the net soon after it made its debut at one of the E3 shows). Oh and of course...the tin. What a ****ing rip off.

CE editions may be nothing more than tat, but at least Blizzard include tat that is of some value. Console game publishers should take note.

    OT: Dead Rising rocks.

I snagged the first special edition, and I'm chuffed I did. Warcraft isn't about playing and having fun, it's about swanning round in Ironforge showing off all your uber stuff, and my Panda and Diablo fit that objective perfectly!

I love Mini Diablo's levitate and fire breath animations. And not forgetting his glow in the dark horn.

    So cute ^_^
