DNF date reports nonsensed

3D Realms kindly bats 'em away.

3D Realms has denounced a product listing for Duke Nukem Forever on Amazon UK that claims that game will be released on December 2nd.

Having spotted the news doing the rounds after the Inquirer picked up on it, we bravely rambled into the 3D Realms forum and discovered that it was being thoroughly shot down by the angry people who live there, including the moderators, who referred everyone to this post:

"There are some common topics you should avoid [...] This includes the latest magazine or website article that claims to know an insider who knows when. They don't. Simple as that. Also, ignore ALL release dates unless you hear them from us. This includes EB Games, Amazon, or anywhere else. We will tell you when it's getting really close, and we will tell you when it's done. We promise."

Duke Nukem Forever is of course the PC first-person shooter sequel to Duke Nukem 3D, which came out opposite id Software's Quake about a billion years ago. 3D Realms has generally always said it'll be ready "when it's done". Remember: it will not be done for December 2nd. Best leave them to it.

    Did Not Finish, I guess.

Looks like prey will beat them to the "Endlessly delayed but finally released FPS" crown.

Lets hope they dont end up like the endlessly delayed John Romero FPS that shall not be named!

    Jeezuuus people !!!

Diakatana took 3 years from concept to release - and that included an engine change.

    Get over it.

/bored with people slagging off Romero - especially when they haven't got a clue what they're talking about.
  • SIDEARM #8 6 years ago

Yeah 3 years to produce a game that felt like it had been in production for 6 months.

Anyway Romero is a serious prat.

You made no case. And Romero is a prat, a self assured arrogant man who relied almost totally on his more talented colleagues when producing the great games of the early id era. Have you seen a good game from him since he left id? no. Have you seen him spout a lot of nonsense and hot air about how great he is? yes.

Hes like the Dave Perry of the games production world.

I'm thinking this is going to be one of those games the souped up, cleaned up, used-to-be-a-gamer dads will buy for their kids, but not really for their kids..

    I don't even care anymore..

If you read 'Masters of Doom' you'll see that Romero played a far bigger part in the development of Doom than he was given credit for. He went from being a gifted coder from a broken home to a self made millionare directly envolved in the level design and coding of some of Ids biggest titles - to the extent that Carmack himself still defends the contribution he made as being key to Doom/Quakes success.

Without a doubt he became a victim of his own hype - but he was also a great target for 14 year old boys who hated his success and loved to knock him down...and don't we love to knock down people on the internet ?!

Its pitiful to see people still whining on about him in the 21st century - as if he personally damaged your childhood by daring to release a substandard game...

Granted he's hardly set the game world on fire since - but some of his Monkeystone titles seem to have had pretty good press.

...and let me guess - you hate Dave Perry because he dares head a company that created one crap Matrix game and has an opinion ?

Ever heard of Sacrifice or MDK ?
  • bionutz #13 6 years ago

MDK was great. Sacrifice average (overhyped)
  • SIDEARM #14 6 years ago

I meant the other Dave Perry. The self titled Games Animal. I like the other Dave Perry, MDK was great.

Anyway im not whining on about Romero, I initially only made a mild comment in my first post - you got excited about it so I expanded upon the resons for making my comment. People werent hacked off that he made a substandard game, 60-70% of all games released are probably substandard in one way or the other, what pisses people off is his constant self-promotion and extreme arrogance, and his continued claims that poor quality work is in fact good and in some way misunderstood. He's the whiner.

speedjack - well said.. it seems gamers seem to DEMAND that game makers owe them in some way, and how DARE they make a game they dont like, and they see that as a personal insult?

    weird or what?
  • Teeth #16 6 years ago

People actually listen to Amazon release dates?
  • Freek #17 6 years ago

It's not weird at all. If you market the game as the greatest thing since the invention of the computer and it isn't then there's going to be some fallout.

And then having a marketing dissaster worthy of Acclaim with the infamouse "John Romero is going to make you his bitch" line probably isn't going to help things along either.

Funnily enough, other developers have no trouble producing bad games without being a prick about it. That's weird. *shrug* He started believing his own press. Not surprising after IDs success but still all his own fault.

Regarding DNF though, I get the feeling if they did think they were merely 2 months from hitting the shelves, we'd probably hear about it in a big way from 3D Realms themselves. Man, they'd be pimping like their life depended on it.

Anyone read the DNF forums? it certainly seems like it's in development, personally I hope it brings back a bit of humour to the FPS genre as it's all getting a bit serious at the moment.

  • Kami #21 6 years ago

    Duke Nukem Forever.

    *yawn*

Sorry, are we still supposed to be remotely interested in this anymore?
  • KraftWerk #22 6 years ago

If you book them, they will come.
  • Xerx3s #23 6 years ago

A release date for DNF? That MUST be bull. We where guaranteed that development would take atleast another 20 or 30 years.

Anyway, they still have some time though. I recall seeing screenies of Prey around '96 (12th of august if i recall correctly) and if i recall correctly (it was a long time ago after all), DNF wasnt anounced untill a conciderable time after that. It would only make sence then to release prey first. :p
